What songs would be on Jamie’s playlist if he had one? The Outlander Cast staff has curated character-specific playlists of Outlander characters. Jamie Fraser is the last in our three-part series.

A few months ago, we decided to create playlists for our favorite Outlander characters. You can catch up on what we created for Claire’s Playlist as well as Frank’s playlist and, yes, Black Jack Randall’s playlist. The idea of Jamie’s playlist was a bit daunting. How do you celebrate the King of Men through music? It turns out that, with enough creative minds, you can create a playlist list with the same depth and emotional range as the King himself. As I worked on this post, I listened to the playlist to be sure that I had captured all the correct songs (quality control is so grueling) and I’m proud to say that this is an awesome collection of music. It’s so good that even the non-Outlander folks in your life will listen with you.

Jamie’s Playlist

“Hands to Myself” by Selena Gomez
This song comes to mind when I think of Season 1 Jamie talking about how there seems to be no end to his wanting of Claire. Then there’s the scene in the glade that was so rudely interrupted by the British soldiers. – Nikki

“Something in the Way She Moves” by James Taylor
Jamie’s eyes always follow Claire as she moves around a room. He is always connected to her and the lyrics “if I’m well you can tell she’s been with me” could have come from James Fraser himself. – Nikki

“Superstitious” by Stevie Wonder
This song makes me think of Jamie explaining Highland culture to Claire in Season 1. He wasn’t superstitious himself, but he understood and respected the feelings and beliefs of his people. – Nikki

“If We Were Vampires” by Jason Isbell
This is one of my favorite songs of 2017 and fits so perfectly with Jamie and Claire. It’s a love song written by a man who realizes that he and his beloved (Amanda Shires Isbell) will, at some point, be parted and the realization that if they were vampires they wouldn’t have to worry about the nonsense of death. However, “time running out is a gift” because it makes us focus on the love we have in front of us in the moment. – Nikki

“Despacito” by Luis Fonsi
If you were alive in the summer of 2017, it was difficult to escape this song. I heard it while sitting at a sidewalk café in Florence! If you are not a speaker of Spanish, I would encourage you to grab a cool towel for your forehead and then Google the lyrics (the order is important here). I think you’ll agree that it summarizes our favorite Jamie and Claire scenes. – Nikki

“Sex on Fire” by Kings of Leon
There’s not much I can add here. – Nikki

“Dimming of the Day” by Richard Thompson
The first episodes of Season 3 made me think about this song. Having someone with whom you can spend the quiet hours at the end of the day is, perhaps, one of the great joys of life. Jamie and Claire were deprived of this for so long. – Nikki

“Lovesong” by The Cure
The lyrics “whenever I’m alone with you, you make me feel like I am free again” remind me so much of Jamie and his feelings for Claire. – Nikki

“Can’t Feel My Face” by The Weeknd
I think about this song whenever I remember Jamie’s gob-smacked face in “The Wedding” after Claire did the thing that made him think his heart was going to burst. You know what I’m talking about. – Nikki

“Falling Slowly” by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová
When Jamie tells Claire that he had been in love with her since the moment she wept in his arms at Leoch, you are able to look back at the previous episodes and watch a man fall in love with a woman for reasons that he can’t quite understand. The lyrics “I don’t know you, but I want you all the more for that” capture those emotions perfectly. – Nikki

“Renegades” by X Ambassadors
This song makes me think about different things in each of the three seasons. In Season 1, it reminds me of the Highlanders riding through the picturesque Scottish countryside. In Season 2, it reminds me of Jamie and Claire trying desperately to stop the war that would end the Highland culture. In Season 3, it reminds me of Jamie and Claire trying to hold everything together with duct tape (or the 1760s equivalent). – Nikki

“The Man” by The Killers
I can’t help but hear this song whenever I think of the opening scene in “A. Malcolm.” Jamie struts down the street and looks every bit like a man who has everything under control. – Nikki

“Death Dream” by Frightened Rabbit
I have it on good authority that Sam listened to this to ready himself to shoot his post-Culloden and cave scenes. He’s good friends with the band. Totally believable. Holy haunting. – Holly

“Soldier” by Fleurie
The other song [Outlander fan video creator] Julia Leblanc and I discussed. She just did a video for Fleurie, which was the song Starz picked for the promo. Did anyone catch that it’s the same song? I picked this one for because it’s fitting for our Highlander soldiers and their grueling battle at Culloden. – Holly

“In a Little While” by U2
“In a little while this hurt will hurt no more. I’ll be home, love. When the night takes a deep breath and the daylight has no air. If I crawl, if I come crawling home will you be there?” – Ashley

“These Are the Days” by Van Morrison
Maybe this is a self-serving choice because Van Morrison sits firmly atop my Mt. Rushmore of music, but this timeless (for me) number applies so well to Jamie and Claire. Those first days after their wedding, when they couldn’t keep their hands off each other and they wondered what it was between them, as well as the time spent at Lallybroch pondering a domesticated and calm future that was never meant to be. These are the days we all wish they’d had, but treasure the kind they were given nonetheless. “These are the days of the endless summer. These are the days, the time is now. There is no past, there’s only future. There’s only here, there’s only now.” – Ashley

“Everything” by Michael Bublé
While it sort of pains me to include a song by this well-loved, bubblegum pop-esque crooner, the lyrics really do put you to mind of Jamie and Claire and how their love helps carry them through the nuttier times. “And in this crazy life and through these crazy times, it’s you, it’s you, you make me sing. You’re every line, you’re every word, you’re everything.”– Ashley

“(I Just) Died In Your Arms” by Cutting Crew
I’m back to “The Wedding” but go ahead and tell me that this isn’t perfect for those post-consummation scenes. – Nikki

“My Baby’s Guns and Roses” by Brantley Gilbert
“She ain’t into wine and dinin. She’s shooting whiskey singing sweet child of mine, now… Man, My Baby’s Guns and Roses…” I don’t think Jamie with all of his Parisian education could have penned a better Ode to Claire – Bobbi

“Yours” by Russell Dickerson
“I came to life when I first kissed you. The best me has his arms around you. You make me better than I was before. Thank God I’m yours.” I’ve always loved that Jamie claimed Claire as “mine” in “The Wedding.” I’ve often thought a very JAMMF thing to declare would be “Aye – Yours, Sassenach.” – Bobbi

“Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye
If Claire’s in trouble, Jamie will be there on the double. – Karen

“Mirrorball” by Elbow
I just love the “we kissed like we invented it” line. It reminds me of Claire’s face when Jamie kisses her for the first time and she realizes that this is something different than anything else she’s ever experienced. – Nikki

“Roll With The Changes” by REO Speedwagon
Can anyone say, Jamie? The lyrics alone say it all. “As soon as you are able, woman I am willing to make the break that we are on the brink of. My cup is on the table, my love is spilling, waiting here for you to take and drink of. So if you’re tired of the same old story, oh, turn some pages. I will be here when you are ready to roll with the changes.” – Blake

“Uprising” by Muse
This song is perfect for the Jacobites. – Blake

“Paris St. Germaine” by The Pogues
The title speaks for itself. – Blake
Note: This song was not available on Spotify.

“Burn” by Ray LaMontagne
This reminds me of Jamie dying on the battlefield of Culloden and seeing Claire. – Karen

“Maybe I’m Amazed” by Paul McCartney and Wings
Jamie and Claire’s love amazes us all. – Karen

“Truly Madly Deeply” by Savage Garden
Savage Garden surely wrote this song for Jamie and Claire! – Karen

“The Dectectorists” by Johnny Flynn
This is the theme song from a beautiful little show by the same name. Every single word of the short song is perfect for the time in which Claire and Jamie are separated, but the first line gets me every time. “Will you search through the lonely earth for me; climb through the briar and bramble? I’ll be your treasure.” – Nikki

“Be My Downfall” by Del Amitri
Let’s set aside the fact that this song is about a man contemplating an affair and focus, instead, on how I love thinking that Jamie could be speaking these words to Claire. No matter what kinds of troubles they found themselves in, they always chose each other even if it meant their certain downfall. Also, Del Amitri is a wonderful Scottish band. – Nikki

“Whiskey and You” by Chris Stapleton
These are the words of a man left with nothing after losing his woman, and then there are the dulcet tones of Chris Stapleton who I had to find an excuse to place on this list. You’re welcome. “There’s a bottle on the dresser by your ring. And it’s empty so right now I don’t feel a thing. I’ll be hurting when I wake up on the floor but I’ll be over it by noon. That’s the difference between whiskey and you.” – Nikki

“A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall” by Walk Off the Earth
How could we not include this after its heart-wrenching appearance in “Of Lost Things? – Nikki

“I Need My Girl” by The National
This is one of those beautifully simple songs and a personal favorite of mine. It’s about being surrounded by the madness of people and family and people who care for you, but only really wanting one thing–your girl. – Nikki

“Beautiful Trauma” by Pink
It would be difficult to find a better song to describe the ups and downs of Jamie and Claire’s relationship. “We were on fire. I slashed your tires. It’s like we burned so bright we burned out. I made you chase me. I wasn’t that friendly.” – Denise

“Photograph” by Ed Sheerhan
This reminds me so much of the scene [in “A. Malcolm”] with Jamie looking at the photographs of Bree. – Denise

“I’m Gonna Be (500 miles)” by The Proclaimers
We all know that when Jamie wakes up, goes out, gets drunk, and havers up, Claire is the one he wants beside him. Know what else? He would walk 500 miles and then walk 500 more just to be the man who walks a thousand miles and falls down at Claire’s door. True story. Also, they’re a Scottish band, soooo… – Nikki & Ashley

“The Gael” by Dougie Maclean
“The Gael is the quintessential musical ode/lament to the wild Scottish warrior and, therefore, the ideal piece of music for Jamie. Originally composed by the Scot Dougie Maclean, it was adapted by Trevor Jones for the movie The Last of The Mohicans. This makes it even more suitable for what transpires for Jamie in later books. To me, it’s one of the most heart-wrenching and beautiful pieces of music, especially when played with the pipes in accompaniment. – Jayne

    Craving You -Thomas Rhett

    1. Wemmies,

What I really loved about this project is that it opened my mind to music that I was music was missing. I searched this long and am listening to it as I type this. And…oh yes…perfect for Jamie and Claire! Thanks so much for reading and playing along!

Hi Nikki, I have been waiting for this one! My taste in music is pretty eclectic, so I have a few from several genres:

I have a couple of songs in mind for Jamie: Superman–Five for Fighting.

I love this one because the lyrics are so amazing: That there’s a living breathing human behind the Superman. That’s Jamie–Particularly Season 3 Jamie.

“Holding out for a Hero” by Bonnie Tyler

That’s Jamie too, the lyrics are amazing about a man whose strong, fast and fresh from the fight.

“Storybook Love” This from the Princess Bride. It’s such beautiful music telling a timeless story of love, I’m surprised it doesn’t play every Valentine’s Day.

“Chains” Tina Arena– Awesome passionate song

And here’s a couple from musicals

“As Long As You’re Mine” from Wicked

“In His Eyes ” from Jeckyll and Hyde

    1. Dawn! I had a feeling you might have some suggestions. These are awesome and now I can’t get that Princess Bride song out of my head. Do you also blurt out quotes from that movie on a daily basis? Maybe that’s just me.

As always, thanks for reading and thanks for sharing!

  3. Linda Hoyle says:

Goodbye and Here I Am by Air Supply. Powerful by Major Lazer feat. Ellie Goulding & Tarrus Riley

    1. I said in an earlier comment that one of my favorite things about this project was that I’ve been introduced to music that I otherwise wouldn’t have found. I spent just a few moments with Powerful and I had to stop playing it. My guy just walked in from a red-eye flight and it really wouldn’t be fair for me to finish listening to that song after having been apart for a week. 😉 Seriously, that song is awesome and I’m putting it in my rotation. Thank you so much for reading and playing along with us. I really appreciate it.

  4. Veronica Millar says:

As the world falls down by David Bowie from the movie Labyrinth.

    1. I saw David Bowie’s name and I suddenly couldn’t see the keyboard…the tears! I still don’t believe that he is gone but I’m so glad that his musical magic lives on. This is an awesome suggestion! Thanks so much for reading and for offering up suggestions. I appreciate it. Truly.

  5. Muriel J Moore says:

I like the music of the Willis Clan. You’ve probably not heard of them, but they play the country fair circuit here in the states. There is a song on their only studio produced album, that always makes me think about our number one couple. “I could stay like this forever, wrapped completely in your arms…” And also, “so this is what it feels like, to hold forever in your hands…” “If there’s such perfection in this fallen world, I wonder what will Heaven be like.” I can’t help going to that first night when Claire and Jamie are reunited, when I hear this song. I only know some of the songs on your list, and they are good picks. For my eclectic music taste I wanted to make my choice known. And The Willis Clan represented…

    1. Thanks so much Muriel! I had never heard this song before but I checked it out. It is beautiful and is absolutely fitting for Jamie and Claire! Thanks so much reading and playing along. I appreciate your presence here.

  6. Muriel J Moore says:

PS the album is Heaven as is the song title.

  7. Karyn says:

    Love this! Thank you!

    1. Thanks so much Karyn!

  8. Susan says:

I think Unforgettable by Nat King Cole would be a great addition to Jamie’s playlist.
The lyrics are simple but so beautiful.

    1. Ahh…one of my all-time favorites. You’ll get no argument from me on that choice! Thanks so much for taking the time to read and comment. I appreciate it.

  9. Kim says:

    Perfect by Ed Sheeran 🙂

    1. Sigh…I love this song. What an excellent choice for Jamie and Claire! Thanks so much for reading and taking the time to comment. I truly appreciate it.

  10. Sue Hale says:

Love this selection – a few songs that I didn’t know. Loved “Dimming of the Day”. Superb!

    1. Thanks so much for reading and taking the time to comment. Richard Thompson has done this song as a duet with several different people but my favorite is with Allison Krauss. I couldn’t find that version in either Spotify or Amazon but it is beautiful and haunting.

  11. Mitzi says:

    Like the list….

I would have added “Lassie Lie near me”.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeMfZrz1U14

  12. Adrienne says:

She’s Always a Woman to Me by Billie Joel

  13. Mitzi Roadcap says:

That is an awesome list of music, Nikki! Thank you. One of my all time favorites is “Breathe You In” by Dierks Bentley off of his Home album. Absolute perfect for Jamie and Claire’s reunion. But what you put together is perfect.

  14. Dawn says:

    Hi Nikki,

Saw your post and I had to grin. How did you know? LOL. Love to quote
that movie, and all movies on a regular basis.

You should hear me with the Ferris Beuller quotes.

    I just love everyone’s suggestions.

  15. Rachel Orkis says:

“Cross Her” by Ed Sheeran would be great, with a video compilation of fight scenes, witch trial rescue and Fort William tower scene. Thanks for the great play list. Love it!
