Why am I nervous? I am a grown woman sitting in front of a television screen and my heart is racing like I’m waiting for my prom date to arrive. STARZ has already promoted #dunbonnet so we know that we’ll see Jamie during the “cave years.” Am I the only one loving the beard and long hair? If Cave Jamie had been my prom date I would have never made curfew. Also, I doubt that I would have attended the post-prom event hosted by the local church.
Here it is. Breathe!

Wee Fergus how I’ve missed you.
[8:01 pm] Sing me a song…why am I crying? Gather your wits woman.
[8:02 pm] That’s one hell of a sketch for the Dunbonnet “Wanted” poster. Maybe the soldiers should ask the sketch artist where Jamie is. I’m pretty sure they were in the same room when this was drawn.
[8:03 pm] I grew up on a farm and I have seven male cousins. These three give me the same sense of dread I had when my older cousin said things like “go ahead try it, we did it yesterday, there’s no way you could get hurt.” Someone always got hurt.
[8:04 pm] Mind the wooden leg redcoats! Is it necessary to drag this poor old man down the steps? If he bolts, the odds are definitely in your favor. That old man is Ian!
[8:05 pm] Jenny will quietly observe the proceedings from the stairs. Uh oh, she put her hand on her hip. Watch out redcoats, here she comes great pregnant belly and all.
[8:06 pm] That is an excellent poker face dear Jenny. Calling him your “traitorous brother” added an element of authenticity. Wait, are you joking? You really do know where Jamie is. Right? I’m caught up in your web of deception Jenny Murray! Once again, a man of Lallybroch is carted off to prison. Maybe they have their own Lallybroch cell.
[8:07 pm] Look at you Mary McNabb. It’s good that you’re helping Jenny out at Lallybroch; such a nice, sweet lady.
[8:08 pm] Who wore it best Cave Jamie or Hugh Munro? It’s killing me to see him like this. However, I have been waiting weeks to see this scene. The image of Jamie pulling back the arrow is spectacular. That is amazing camera work.
[8:09 pm] Jamie sees Claire everywhere. She is always with him. I’m crying (again). Jamie has lost his words. What is left to say when everything you’ve loved is gone?
[8:10 pm] It’s never good when Jenny starts a sentence with “brother.” Just keep hacking at the carcass Jamie. Get it out. Get all the emotions out.
[8:11 pm] Is Claire dreaming or is she fantasizing? I’m on board either way. I’m just wondering why she would intentionally torture herself like this. Nevermind. The self torture is becoming clearer to me. That is an amazing…err…smile. Claire realizes that she’s alone even though Frank is lying next to her.
[8:13 pm] There’s baby Bree!
[8:14 pm] Yes, Frank she touched you. She cracked the door of her heart and took a peek outside. Now, stop looking like you want to devour her. Be cool man. Don’t rush this. Why am I helping Frank?!
[8:16 pm] Wee Fergus hasn’t yet developed a speech filter and lashes out at Jamie for being a coward. Meanwhile, Jamie appears to have lost something in the belly of that fish. He looks like me trying to find car keys at the bottom of my purse.
[8:17 pm] Jamie has become his sorrow. His eyes speak the pain that his lost words can’t. Did I mention what a nice lady Mary McNabb is?
[8:18 pm] These boys are one Darla and a Petey away from a Little Rascals remake. Speaking of large groups of children, where are Jenny and Ian’s other kids? Shouldn’t they have three or four more by now?
[8:19 pm] Mary McNabb I was prepared to hate you. I do not. Maybe it’s the wine?
[8:20 p.m] In Jenny’s defense she didn’t know that Claire was pregnant when she left but she did know about Faith. How about a little compassion Jenny Murray? Just when I thought this couldn’t get more awkward she asks the question that is surely on every big sister’s mind. Jenny is a wee bit too concerned about Jamie’s personal #Droughtlander. And so begins the matchmaking. Real world note: if you are a sister who serves as a Tinder service for your brother stop it. Stop it now. It’s weird.
[8:21 pm] These British soldiers really need to find a different hobby; chess perhaps? Jenny appears dangerously close to losing her poker face.
[8:22 pm] Jamie has a baby in one hand and a dagger in the other. Who knew that could be sexy? Young Ian is, perhaps, destined for a life of adventure.
[8:23 pm] Mary McNabb takes one for the team; the team being the gang of miscreants that includes her son. I see what you’re doing here writers. I’m on to you.
[8:24 pm] This is the first time that Jenny actually looks rattled. The cat and mouse game is taking a toll on her.
[8:26 pm] Claire misses her husband. To be fair, she didn’t say which one. Is anyone else hearing the words “come find me…come find us” in their heads right now? Frank is going to screw this up. I just know it. Nope, he didn’t.
[8:27 pm] Ian is home and still as sassy as ever. He doesn’t look any worse for the wear.
[8:28 pm] Fergus has always been a terrible combination of confidence and recklessness, but he’s so darned cute that those traits seem endearing.
[8:29 pm] The Scottish corporal reminds me of the boy who always tried just a little too hard to prove that he was one of the cool kids.
[8:30 pm] Oh, that was terrible. I knew it was coming but still…Fergus you wee fool…
[8:31 pm] Jamie finally speaks. He’s risking everything to help Fergus. Even now Claire is with him as he works to stop the bleeding.
[8:32 pm] It had to come sooner or later, but to see Jamie finally break is gut wrenching. Jenny is the only other woman in the world who can give him comfort. She will always be equal parts mother and sister. My entire face is leaking.
[8:33 pm] Fergus’ tragedy has rekindled something in Jamie. He’s speaking with conviction again. Fergus notices too and remarks, “There you are milord.”
[8:34 pm] Ever the connoisseur, Fergus prefers French wine to whisky. Not so fast there, Fergus. I think they both have merit.
[8:35 pm] Nothing motivates Jamie like a debt of honor. He seems to come alive when he tells Fergus that he can always trust him to keep the bargain.
[8:36 pm] I was hoping that we wouldn’t have to see Millie again. That voice is like fingernails on a chalkboard. Does anyone remember what that sounds like?
[8:37 pm] That’s a neat party trick Claire, but this is going to end badly.
[8:38 pm] Stop telling her to look at you! And, there it is. You’re not making this easy Frank.
[8:40 pm] Ian is describing phantom pain. I have a feeling he’s not just referring to missing limbs. “Claire was your heart.” Ian pulled the pin on a feeling grenade and ever so gently lobbed it over to Jamie. On a related note, the feelings are rolling down my face (again).
[8:41 pm] I really don’t like this plan.
[8:42 pm] Jenny doesn’t want to send Jamie back to prison. Jamie makes it clear that he’s merely trading one cell for another.
[8:43 pm] Here comes Mary McNabb with a picnic lunch. Sandwiches and a shave; it’s how all the best picnics start. She found Jamie’s face! She has earned whatever happens next.
[8:45 pm] Mary, I truly don’t hate you right now. I am strangely ok with this.
[8:46 pm] That tear though…
[8:47 pm] Brianna looks like a baby version of Buddy the Elf.
[8:48 pm] Let the Misogyny Olympics begin! In our next event, Claire will face an old white man (this is an unsettling theme) who (insert shocked face) believes that she is unsuited to be a medical student.
[8:49 pm] Professor Asshole wins this week’s contest for least favorite line with “a woman and a negro.” The only reason I’m even close to being ok with that statement is that it gets us one step closer to Dr. Joe. I love me some Dr. Joe.
[8:50 pm] And there he is! Dr. Joe Abernathy!
[8:51 pm] Is that a toothpick? Who uses a toothpick in bed and what makes him think she won’t stab him with it. Speaking of stabbing, hey Frank, while your wife was away she killed some people. They all deserved it but still, she killed people. You’ve been warned.
[8:52 pm] This is terrible. I actually believe Jenny when she says that she’ll never forgive Jamie.
[8:53 pm] Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, Jamie is in the back of a wagon and headed to prison. Does it ever stop, the imprisonment?
[8:54 pm] Oh come on! How can Claire stop living in the past when there is a bagpiper playing “Scotland the Brave” on her route to work? You’re killing me slowly Outlander.
It was so good to get a few, brief glimpses of the old Jamie and to see him slowly begin to turn himself right side out. It’s still painful to watch Claire try and fail to be a wife and lover. It’s even more painful to watch Frank try to push her into a space that she’s not quite ready to inhabit. On a happier note, we have babies! Bree is already showing signs of being a strong-willed girl and Ian had his first adventure. I’m still worried about Jenny and Ian’s other kids but maybe we’ll see them soon. I am not usually one to notice production elements, but I do want to mention those shots with the bow and arrow one more time. They were stunning. Thanks to Ashley Crawley for the opportunity to help out with the live blogging duties this week. If you hated this post, please come back next week and I promise that Ashley will make you laugh. Now, great recap. Writers used lack of speech brilliantly as it connected back 6 years to Culloden and the multiple trauma Jamie suffered and still hold him in its grip.
Happy Mary could bring comfort desperately needed by Jamie. Jenny finally is holding her real brother, as he sobs for what has been and what is to come.
Fergus, a teenage boy with lots of, shall we say, some rather unique experiences, is so, him! And then his life changes in an instant.
Frank; take what Claire is giving you! Don’t insist she look at you! Why are you sabatouging her tentative nudges?
I thought she was offering an olive branch, saying she missed her husband. A lot of people see it differently?
The writers had a lot of ground that they had to get in.
They did and very well.
This episode went by very fast! ??????
Frances, I love the way the writers have used dialogue (or the absence thereof) to convey Jamie’s grief and sorrow. It’s brilliant! I completely agree with you on the time. The episode went so fast I couldn’t believe that it was over.
I didn’t notice until my second watching that in that last scene with Claire and Frank, they are in twin beds!
I didn’t notice the twin bed either until Monday morning when someone pointed them out to me. Doh! I was too worried about Frank and his toothpick.

[In the book] Weren’t the younger children always kept out of sight somewhere so that they didn’t inadvertently blurt out something about their Uncle Jamie to the Redcoats? Or maybe I just made that up in my head to explain their absence.

Thoroughly enjoyed your recap, Nikki! Might I say that Sam’s acting this season is superb? The pain and anguish in his eyes and face is palpable….. I had trickles of tears throughout the show as well…. I , too thought the long haired and bearded Dunbonnet was , ahem pretty darn sexy myself… coupled with that bow & arrow scene……super swoon?

I’m so glad that you mentioned Sam’s acting. It’s pretty easy for me to make reactionary comments about things but it usually takes me some time to really absorb what I’ve seen and then write about it. When I wrote the live blog I was so carried away by the acting that I was only thinking of Sam, Jenny, Frank, Claire, Fergus, and Ian. It didn’t occur to me until about half way through the day on Monday that it was probably some of the best acting I’ve ever seen. I truly lost sight of the fact that Laura Donnelly was playing Jenny. In that episode she BECAME Jenny. If I could have a do-over I would definitely include something along those lines at the end.
I’ll fight ya for cave Jamie. 😉

Has there been a production staff change or something…. ? The episodes just seem slow and drawn out ….. they don’t seem to have the “oomph” or pizzaz of previous seasons-
We were always commenting that every episode was done so well, like a movie in itself…. things seem to be different in the last two episodes 🙁 Things seem so trite and predictable too 🙁 …..

My drink is ready and I’m ready to pass around the chips.
I had some thoughts on Surrender, or as I like to call it, “Everyone Goes Through Hell.”
The writing for Outlander this season is amazing, there is so much. I just love the parallel to previous episodes.
Where to begin, First, loved seeing Fergus again. Boy, I have to stop calling him little Fergus. I think the kid’s voice was changing!
The actor and character is great! He is folding in some Scottish phrases, losing his French accent, and he is solidly Jamie’s son: He’s a warrior. You could see the same reactiveness in growing Fergus, as you do in Jamie (or Jamie as he had been).
Great seeing the group of boys together. Fergus was clearly the leader of that gang, and I thought Robbie McNabb was great also.
Was it me, or was Wee Jamie quite a whiny character—so odd to think of that character as Jenny and Ian’s son.
Isn’t he supposed to be the one who takes over Lallybrook and supposed to be the one to carry on the Frazier legacy?
Maybe next to Fergus and Robbie, the character just seemed so wishy-washy.
Oh, boy, Jenny. She’s pregnant and given birth again. Wow! She’s a pistol.
Now, those Frazier’s really go through hell, don’t they? Jenny and Ian and Jamie constantly have to worry about surviving the Red Coats, and try to make something of their livelihood, besides. Poor Ian is captured several times and put in prison.
Impossible stuff.
Wow, major kudos for Jenny. She just goes on and does what has to be done without examining her feelings or seeing into despair.
She is tough because she has to be, but caring. She is truly a woman who I think I respect the most. Claire may be the protagonist of Outlander, but while Claire often screams to demand respect, she demands it for her skills and knowledge, Jenny by contrast, never says so, but simply gets respect for being the woman she is.
Laura Donnley knocked me out with her acting. As Jenny, she has to bear so much, and I wouldn’t have dared saying that the baby I just gave birth to, just died! Scots are superstitious people and it must have freaked her out to say it. She made up the story to protect Jamie. At it could easily backfire on her. Jenny knows the soldiers could come back to her home, discover the live baby, and kill them all!
Poor Jamie. Not only did he survive when he didn’t really want to, he is now surviving on the periphery of his family: He can’t get close, for so many reasons. Lallybrook belongs to him, he is Laird, and yet because he is hiding out, and still grieving for Claire, the life he had with her, a future they could have had, he is now hiding out in a cave, like a mountain man hiding and afraid to put his family in danger.
Like Jenny though, he does what he needs to.
Seeing the confrontation between Fergus and Jamie made me so emotional, and I have to give acting bows to Sam again. He really is a master of understatement with Jamie. It’s a quiet, reserved strength that is amazing to watch.
When Fergus accused Jamie of being a coward, it just showed how much of a shell of a man he was. Without Claire, he didn’t want to live as the strong warrior he was, he wasn’t as much of a reactive man, he’s quite changed now.
There’s a new antagonist—a Scottish traitor—McGregor. Yuck. An opportunist who reminds me of Frank Burns from M.A.S.H.
I miss Black Jack
Poor Fergus!
Not only did McGregor cut off Fergus’s hand purposely (Because I think Fergus told him the truth about himself), but he didn’t allow the Redcoat with him to give Fergus medical attention.
What an SOB.
Funny, I think that both Jamie and Black Jack would have the same exact reaction to McGregor: Distain. The both would have utter contempt for a man who would betray his own people to go to the enemy’s side, for his own self. A man with no loyalty isn’t a man at all.
Through Fergus, Jamie realized he has something to live for.
The scene where Jamie helps Fergus was so sweet, without hesitation, without thinking of himself, he stops the bleeding, stating: “I’ve seen M’lady do this many times,” and be so tender with Fergus.
To Jamie, Fergus is truly his son.
That kid really has taken a lot of punishment in his short life. At least the show is not glossing over his trauma this time, as they did with Fergus’s rape in Season 2.
I think one of the ways Jamie tries to get back to himself is with MaryMcNabb. Their sex scene was less about sex than him trying to connect with a woman. It was sweet, and nothing more than two people giving each other what they needed. Giving each other a spark of life when they needed it.
I don’t even think she called him by his name!
And the shaving scene was sweet. It reminded me of The Garrison Commander when Claire was recalling shaving Frank when they were in love.
But back to Mary, she seems like a sweet, pragmatic woman. She was quite brave saying the gun was hers, putting herself in danger.
Hug of the week goes to Ian! So sweet and insightful for him to link the loss of his leg to Furgus’s hand and situation. He quietly and compassionately let Jamie know what the kid was feeling and what was going to face.
Just amazing stuff.
Okay, now to Claire and Frank and Bree.
I have to apologize in advance; Sorry guys, Claire came close to annoying me this episode. I feel for her for grieving for Jamie, God knows I was, but there is a limit!
She seemed very self-indulgent regarding her feelings. Sometimes I feel the character relates to other characters only as a as a mirror of herself.
When she constantly moans the fact that her life with Frank and Bree is not a life that she wants, doesn’t she realize that it is a slap in the face to Jamie, Frank, and Bree?
I know there is a great debate between Jamie or Frank, but I tend to see them as very similar characters at their center: Both of them love Claire so much, they are both willing to let her be herself. They are both willing to give so much of themselves to please her.
I can’t see Claire ever being that selfless.
Jamie wanted Claire and his baby, not only to be safe, survive, but to thrive with a man that truly could love them both. Frank not only truly loves Claire, he loves another man’s child as his own, because he loves her so much.
I think Claire would have sacrificed her baby and pregnancy, if it were up to her.
As far as Claire knows, this was the last thing that Jamie asked of her, and she really isn’t thinking about honoring him at all.
She seems to be one of those characters that if she is miserable; everyone around her has to be
I think it was quite unfair of Claire to go on and on in Through A Looking Glass Darkly about how she loved Jamie deeply, and it’s something she makes sure that she never lets Frank forget it. Or herself for that matter.
The Randall’s are quite beyond hope. That marriage does not have a pulse anymore.
Oh, the sex scene between Claire and Frank—boy, I was waiting for her to scream out Jamie’s name! It’s so obvious that she is thinking of Jamie every time she is with Frank. It was great he called her on it.
Wow, It all kind of reminded me of the Pilot episode Saussenach when Claire stated as long as she and Frank had a good sex life, they could always reconnect.
Not happening. Twin beds! Hilarious.
In love, somebody always love a little bit more, and Jamie and Frank fit that bill.
Now, I mentioned Bree also. In Dragonfly in Amber, a twenty year old Bree mentioned how she never could connect with Claire, and how she gravitated to Frank as her parent and saw him as a friend.
I think this was the episode that hinted at this. Claire was very focused on her own career, her own fulfillment, her own happiness with medical school. She only was concerned with Bree when baby Bree rolled over and Claire was thrilled how advanced she was developing.
Claire raved about how advanced and smart she was, while Frank merely gave the baby a kiss.
This reminded me very much of Season 2 Paris when Claire was working in the charity hospital while she was very pregnant with Faith. Jamie was extremely concerned with her tasting urine, catching diseases, and basically putting the baby in danger.
Claire basically blew him off, stating how she needed to work, to feel useful, to feel like a whole person.
She barely even heard Jamie’s concerns, and didn’t even consider baby Faith.
Her own feelings mattered more to her.
For someone who was so concerned in Season 2 that Frank be born (that she even interfered with both Alex Randall and Mary Hawkins, and made sure Mary married that bastard Black Jack), Claire seemed to forget why she wanted Frank to live in the first place.
I’m thinking that Frank had to stay alive simply to enhance Bree’s life, not Claire’s.
I think I’m forgetting so much, but that’s all for now.
