The finale is strongest when its mythology is expressed through a character’s choice. Adar chooses his children over the Elf he once was. Celebrimbor chooses defiance over surrender. Durin III chooses his son and kingdom over the Ring that corrupted him. Galadriel finally rejects the future Sauron keeps trying to offer her. Those choices give the episode its emotional weight.

The hour becomes shakier when it expects the audience to recognize the importance of a name, object, or future storyline before the drama has made that importance clear. Gandalf’s naming, the sudden arrival of Narsil, Durin’s previously unmentioned brother, and Arondir’s unexplained recovery all feel more like boxes being checked than turns the story has fully earned.

The Rings Of Power Season 2 Episode 8 Recap: What Happens In “Shadow And Flame”?

“Shadow And Flame” begins in the wreckage of Eregion and spends most of its running time resolving the conflicts that have driven Season 2. Celebrimbor finally sees Sauron without the mask of Annatar, entrusts the Nine Rings for Men to Galadriel, and refuses to give his tormentor the submission he wants. Sauron responds by torturing and killing him, but Celebrimbor dies with the final word. Sauron may call himself a master of the Rings, yet Celebrimbor tells him that the Rings will become his prison and his downfall.

Adar briefly offers another possibility. After wearing Nenya and being restored to the appearance of the Elf he once was, he returns the Ring to Galadriel willingly. He no longer wants to conquer the Elves or return to the life that existed before Morgoth transformed him. He wants to take his children home to Mordor, protect them from Sauron, and end the war.

That possibility lasts only moments. Glûg and the Orcs betray Adar, stabbing their father in a deliberate echo of the attack that opened the season against Sauron. Their new master then kills Glûg and claims control of the army Adar spent generations trying to protect.

Galadriel confronts Sauron as she attempts to keep the Rings beyond his reach. During their fight, Sauron shifts through the faces and identities he has used to manipulate her, including Halbrand, Celebrimbor, and Galadriel herself. He offers her the crown beside him one final time. She refuses.

Sauron stabs Galadriel with Morgoth’s crown, leaving a wound poisoned by dark power. Galadriel falls from the cliff rather than surrender Nenya to him. Elrond, Gil-galad, and the surviving Elves find her and use the Three Rings to pull her back from the darkness.

In Khazad-dûm, Durin III finally understands what the Dwarven Ring has done to him. He removes it, apologizes to Durin IV, and charges into battle against the Balrog. His sacrifice seals the creature beneath the mountain for now, but his death leaves Durin IV with a contested throne, seven Dwarven Rings, and the sudden revelation that his brother may challenge him for the crown.

Elsewhere, the Stranger defeats the Dark Wizard’s servants, saves the Stoors, finds his staff, and finally chooses the name Gandalf. In Númenor, Míriel gives Narsil to Elendil and sends him toward his destiny. Kemen arrives in Pelargir to impose Pharazôn’s authority, Theo is pushed toward a leadership role he may not want, and Isildur is forced to leave Estrid behind.

The surviving Elves gather in a protected valley that unmistakably points toward the founding of Rivendell. With Eregion destroyed, Celebrimbor dead, Adar gone, and Sauron holding Fëanor’s hammer, the pieces are in place for the next phase of the war.

The Rings Of Power Season 2 Episode 8 Review

The central difference between the finale’s best and weakest material is whether the mythology arrives through a meaningful choice.

Adar’s story works because returning Nenya is the culmination of everything the series has shown us about him. Celebrimbor’s death works because he finally denies Sauron the thing Sauron wants most: the ability to define another person’s reality. Durin III’s sacrifice works because he sees what the Ring has cost him and acts before it can cost him his son.

Even Galadriel’s confrontation with Sauron works because the battle turns their complicated emotional history into action. Sauron tries every face, memory, promise, and wound he can use against her. Galadriel sees the temptation clearly and closes the door herself.

These moments do more than move the lore into its proper place. They reveal who the characters have become after two seasons of pressure.

The Gandalf and Narsil reveals work differently. Their importance comes largely from what viewers already know will happen later. The finale announces the names and asks recognition to create the emotional response. That can be exciting for deeply invested Tolkien fans, but it leaves casual viewers doing work the episode should have done for them.

That tension runs through “Shadow And Flame.” The finale earns its sacrifices, but it rushes several of its reveals.

Adar Gives Galadriel Nenya — And Chooses His Children

Adar’s final scene with Galadriel may be the cleanest character payoff in the episode. Nenya temporarily restores the Elf he was before Morgoth’s corruption, giving him a glimpse of the identity and beauty that were taken from him. He could cling to the Ring, seek restoration, or attempt to reclaim the person he used to be.

Instead, Adar removes Nenya and gives it back.

He chooses the Uruk he has become. More importantly, he chooses his children. His goal has always been to build a place where the Orcs can live without serving Morgoth, Sauron, or anyone else who sees them only as disposable weapons. The Ring offers him personal restoration, but accepting it would mean abandoning the people he has spent his life trying to protect.

That makes his death more painful. Adar’s fear of Sauron drives him to place his children in greater danger, while Sauron exploits the resentment that decision created. Adar chooses his children at the exact moment they choose Sauron over him.

His ending is tragic because it grows directly from his love, his fear, and the methods he used to pursue what he believed was best for the Uruk.

Celebrimbor’s Death Makes Sauron The Lord Of The Rings

Celebrimbor spends much of the season trapped inside Sauron’s deception, but his final moments belong entirely to him. Once the illusion breaks, Sauron can hurt his body without reclaiming control of his mind.

The violence of Celebrimbor’s death also strips away any remaining romance from Sauron’s Halbrand disguise. Sauron is a deceiver, but he is also a torturer who needs his victims to accept his version of events. Celebrimbor refuses.

His final declaration—that Sauron is already a slave to the Rings and that they will ultimately destroy him—turns the title “Lord of the Rings” into an accusation. Sauron may control the objects, but his need to dominate Middle-earth through them will control him.

The scene also pays off Galadriel’s earlier vision of Celebrimbor consumed and raised by twisting vines. The arrows embedded in him, the structure holding his body aloft, and Galadriel’s role in bringing Halbrand into his life all converge in one image. The season planted that visual idea early and allows its full meaning to arrive only when Celebrimbor dies.

His death closes one of Season 2’s strongest relationships while creating the emotional and philosophical provocation that may lead Sauron to forge the One Ring.

Galadriel And Sauron Make The Finale Personal

The Galadriel and Sauron fight succeeds because it remains personal even while carrying the future of Middle-earth. Sauron does not simply overpower Galadriel. He cycles through the identities and emotional pressure points that once allowed him to reach her.

Halbrand stops her in her tracks because that face still carries the memory of the person she thought she knew. Celebrimbor represents the damage caused by Sauron’s deception and Galadriel’s decision to bring Halbrand into Eregion. When Sauron takes Galadriel’s own form, the fight turns her internal conflict into something physical.

Sauron’s claim that he wanted Galadriel beside him contains genuine feeling, but it is the feeling of someone who cannot separate love from ownership. His offer remains conditional: she may have power, light, and purpose only if she accepts the world he has designed for her.

Galadriel rejects that bargain. Her final challenge—that Sauron must heal himself before pretending he can heal Middle-earth—recognizes the wound beneath his ambition without excusing what he has become.

The scene gives greater context to the Galadriel who will eventually face the temptation of the One Ring. She understands what Sauron offers because she has already stood beside him, wanted to believe him, and seen exactly where that road ends.

Durin III And The Balrog Give The Finale Its Clearest Sacrifice

Durin III’s sacrifice is the episode’s most direct emotional payoff. The Ring convinces him that it has opened the mountain to his sight, but it has actually blinded him to the creature awakening beneath Khazad-dûm and to the damage he is doing to his son.

His reconciliation with Durin IV arrives when he finally removes the Ring and sees clearly again. Durin III cannot repair everything he has broken, but he can make one final choice that protects his son and the kingdom.

The image of the Dwarven king charging the Balrog is enormous, but the spectacle works because the scene has already made the action personal. Durin III is fighting for the son he pushed away.

The immediate danger may be buried beneath the collapsed mountain, although anyone familiar with the future of Khazad-dûm knows the Balrog has not been permanently defeated. That uncertainty leaves Durin IV inheriting more than a crown. He inherits his father’s kingdom, the consequences of the Rings, a threat beneath the mountain, and a succession crisis the series has only just introduced.

Why The Gandalf Reveal, Narsil And Durin’s Brother Feel Rushed

The Stranger being Gandalf is not the problem. The series has been pointing toward that identity from the beginning. The problem is the final step from the Stranger to “Grand-Elf,” then from “Grand-Elf” and the word gand to Gandalf.

The episode never gives the casual viewer enough information to understand that linguistic construction as it happens. After spending two seasons treating the Stranger’s identity as a mystery, the answer arrives through a nickname that the story creates only moments before the reveal.

Narsil has a similar problem. Míriel presents Elendil with a named sword and tells him to claim his destiny, but the scene does not establish why she has chosen this weapon, what it means to her, or why she believes Elendil should carry it. Fans who recognize the sword understand its future importance. The scene itself does not yet provide that importance.

Durin IV’s brother appears as another piece of sudden future setup. A contested Dwarven throne is a strong direction for Season 3, but introducing a brother who has never been discussed makes the conflict feel attached to the ending rather than grown from the family story we have watched.

Arondir’s recovery creates a smaller version of the same issue. The finale shows him moving and fighting after a wound that appeared potentially fatal, yet offers no visual beat explaining how he survived. One brief image of Arondir using the healing seeds already associated with him would have closed the gap.

None of these problems ruins the finale. Together, however, they keep “Shadow And Flame” from feeling as complete as its best scenes deserve.

What The Rings Of Power Season 2 Ending Sets Up For Season 3

Season 2 ends with Sauron holding Fëanor’s hammer, Celebrimbor’s warning still hanging over him, and the Nine Rings moving closer to the Men they will eventually enslave. The path toward the creation of the One Ring is now open.

The Elves have found the valley that will become Rivendell. Elendil carries Narsil and has been separated from the Númenórean power structure controlled by Pharazôn. Durin IV faces a contested throne and must decide what to do with the seven Dwarven Rings. Gandalf knows his name but still has to understand his purpose and his relationship to the Dark Wizard. Kemen is extending Númenor’s control into Middle-earth, while Theo is being positioned to matter in the conflict growing around Pelargir.

The finale also clears away several long-running stories. Celebrimbor and Durin III are gone. Adar’s army belongs to Sauron. Galadriel and Elrond have accepted that the Three Rings must be used. The Stranger no longer needs to wander Middle-earth in search of his identity.

That gives Season 3 an opportunity to become more focused, with Sauron, the Rings, Númenor, Rivendell, and the Dwarven succession driving the story forward.

Our Final Verdict On “Shadow And Flame”

Mary came away from the finale feeling satisfied. The season closes the relationships and mysteries that needed an answer while leaving enough unresolved movement for the next chapter. Her 4.95 reflects how strongly the emotional conclusions landed, even with a few pieces of hurried setup.

Blake’s 4.79 reflects a similar appreciation with more frustration over the mechanics. The finale contains some of the season’s best character work, particularly with Adar, Celebrimbor, Galadriel, Sauron, and the Durins. It also occasionally behaves as though introducing a famous name or future plot point is the same thing as dramatizing why it matters.

“Shadow And Flame” remains a strong conclusion to a season that corrected many of the problems from Season 1. Its best moments understand that Middle-earth becomes meaningful through the people making impossible choices inside it. When the episode trusts those choices, it is powerful. When it rushes toward the next familiar piece of lore, the construction becomes visible.

The Rings Of Power Season 2 Episode 7 Recap: What Happens In “Doomed To Die”?

“Doomed To Die” centers on the siege and eventual fall of Eregion. Adar’s Orc army attacks the city while Elrond leads an Elven force in a desperate attempt to stop him. Inside the walls, Celebrimbor remains trapped within the false reality Sauron created around him, believing Eregion is peaceful while the city burns beyond his workshop.

The illusion begins to break when Celebrimbor notices the same mouse repeating the same movements and realizes that time around him is behaving unnaturally. He tests the world Sauron has built, sees through the deception, and finally understands that Annatar has been controlling his perception while pushing him to complete the Nine Rings intended for Men.

Celebrimbor confronts Sauron and attempts to destroy the Nine. Sauron reveals that the supposed mithril used in their construction was his own blood disguised as the precious metal. The Nine therefore contain a much more direct piece of Sauron than the Three Elven Rings or the Seven made for the Dwarves.

As Celebrimbor tries to warn the people of Eregion, Sauron turns the city against him. Mirdania and the guards believe their lord has lost his mind. Sauron then uses his power to throw Mirdania from the wall, allowing Celebrimbor to appear responsible for her death.

Celebrimbor is restrained in his own workshop, but he refuses to remain Sauron’s prisoner. He cuts off his own thumb to escape his shackles, takes the Nine Rings, and attempts to get them beyond Sauron’s reach.

Outside the city, Elrond meets with Adar under a temporary truce. Adar demands Galadriel’s Elven Ring in exchange for her life. Elrond refuses, kisses Galadriel as a distraction, and secretly passes her the brooch she can use to escape.

The battle resumes. Elrond and Gil-galad fight alongside the Elven army, Arondir joins the assault, and the hill troll Damrod helps weaken Eregion’s defenses. The Elves wait for Durin and the Dwarven army to arrive from Khazad-dûm, but the promised reinforcement never comes.

Durin IV had assembled his forces and prepared to march to Elrond’s aid. He changes course after learning that Durin III has attacked his own people and resumed digging beneath the mountain under the Ring’s influence. Durin must choose between honoring his promise to Elrond and protecting Khazad-dûm from his father.

Eregion falls. Adar defeats Elrond and takes Nenya, the Ring Elrond had been carrying for Galadriel. Adar also stabs Arondir, leaving his fate uncertain as the episode ends.

Inside the city, Sauron takes control of the guards and forces them to turn their weapons upon one another. Celebrimbor escapes with the Nine, but Sauron remains in Eregion with Fëanor’s hammer and complete control of the city’s final hours.

The Rings Of Power Season 2 Episode 7 Review

“Doomed To Die” works because the episode narrows its attention to the stories that have generated the most pressure throughout the season. The Stranger, Númenor, Isildur, Theo, and several other threads are held for the finale. That concentration gives the Battle of Eregion room to develop as a complete dramatic event rather than another piece of a constantly interrupted ensemble.

The episode also understands that a large battle needs an emotional spine. The fall of Eregion matters because it is the physical consequence of Celebrimbor’s mistake. Sauron entered the city through Celebrimbor’s pride, exploited his desire to create something worthy of Fëanor’s legacy, and converted that ambition into the weapon that destroys his home.

The walls are falling because Celebrimbor allowed Sauron inside them. His eventual awakening gives the battle personal meaning.

The action is also the closest the series has come to fully inhabiting the cinematic world audiences associate with Peter Jackson’s films. The cavalry charge, Elven armor, Orc formations, practical creatures, burning city, and defensive lines create a visual continuity with Middle-earth without simply reproducing an existing sequence.

The episode echoes the Battle of Helm’s Deep while changing its emotional result. Elrond looks toward the horizon expecting Durin’s arrival, much as the heroes of earlier stories look toward the dawn for salvation. Nobody appears. The expected rescue becomes another defeat.

Celebrimbor Finally Sees Sauron’s Deception

Celebrimbor’s story is the heart of the episode and arguably the strongest sustained storyline The Rings Of Power has created.

The audience has known Annatar is Sauron from the beginning, but the drama never depends upon waiting for Celebrimbor to catch up with information we already possess. The tension comes from watching Sauron maintain the deception while his control becomes more desperate, visible, and cruel.

Celebrimbor begins the episode inside a beautiful artificial morning. He drinks tea, works peacefully, and believes his city is safe. The repeated mouse becomes the small flaw that exposes the entire construction. Sauron can manipulate what Celebrimbor sees, yet he cannot create a flawless reality.

Once Celebrimbor recognizes the pattern, the illusion can no longer hold. He throws Fëanor’s hammer through the window, shattering the barrier between the false world and the battle outside. Sound, smoke, fire, and destruction rush into the room. The transition turns his psychological awakening into a physical revelation.

Celebrimbor sees the city, the war, and the cost of his ambition at the same moment.

His decision to cut off his thumb completes the reversal. Celebrimbor has spent his life creating with his hands. Sacrificing part of that hand shows how fully he understands the danger of the Nine and how desperate he has become to undo what Sauron forced him to make.

Sauron’s Blood Explains The Power Of The Nine Rings

The revelation that Sauron’s blood was disguised as mithril gives the Nine Rings a direct physical connection to their creator.

Sauron influenced the creation of the Seven Dwarven Rings and manipulated the process surrounding the Three Elven Rings, but the Nine contain a part of him. Celebrimbor remains the master smith who shapes them, while Sauron supplies the substance that corrupts them.

That distinction helps explain why the Rings intended for Men will hold such overwhelming power over their eventual bearers. The Nine are not merely pieces of jewelry designed with knowledge provided by Sauron. They are made from him.

The reveal also confirms how much Sauron needs Celebrimbor. Sauron possesses extraordinary magical power. He can alter perception, control bodies, manipulate movement, and force soldiers to kill one another. He still cannot reproduce Celebrimbor’s creative skill.

Sauron can provide the corruption. Celebrimbor must provide the craft.

That dependence gives their relationship its push and pull. Sauron needs Celebrimbor’s ability, while Celebrimbor needs the knowledge Annatar appears to offer. Each man believes he can control the arrangement until Celebrimbor realizes that every choice has been shaped for him.

Sauron’s Murder Of Mirdania Reveals His True Cruelty

Mirdania’s death marks the moment when Sauron stops hiding the full extent of his cruelty from the audience.

Throughout Season 2, Charlie Vickers gives Annatar a graceful, patient, and occasionally sympathetic surface. Sauron presents himself as a misunderstood guide who only wants Celebrimbor to complete work that will save Middle-earth.

When Mirdania begins to question what is happening, Sauron casually uses his power to throw her from the wall. He then allows the people of Eregion to believe Celebrimbor caused her death.

The action accomplishes several goals at once. It removes a potential witness, further isolates Celebrimbor, demonstrates Sauron’s control, and forces Celebrimbor to carry the horror of another death caused by trusting Annatar.

Sauron no longer resembles the Halbrand whom Galadriel once wanted to believe. The mask remains beautiful, but the person beneath it is fully visible.

The Battle Of Eregion Finally Feels Like Middle-earth

The battle succeeds through scale, rhythm, visual geography, and physical action. The audience understands the major objectives: Adar wants to breach the walls, Elrond wants to defend the city and stop Sauron, the Elves need the Dwarves to arrive, and Sauron needs Celebrimbor to finish the Nine.

The fight coordination gives individual characters distinct movement. Elrond becomes a convincing warrior, Gil-galad finally demonstrates the martial strength expected of the High King, and Sauron’s controlled guards move with a disturbing lack of agency.

The Orcs also feel like participants in the battle rather than anonymous digital bodies. Adar’s soldiers suffer, hesitate, argue, and recognize that their father is sacrificing them to reach Sauron. Glûg’s discomfort grows as the Orc casualties mount, preparing the resentment that may shape Adar’s fate.

Damrod the hill troll provides scale and spectacle, though his contribution feels smaller than the buildup surrounding him. He weakens the wall and kills numerous unnamed fighters, but the sequence promises a decisive consequence that never fully arrives. His final arrow is given a major visual emphasis without a clear payoff.

That prevents the battle from being flawless, but the larger sequence remains the show’s most confident action filmmaking to this point.

Elrond And Durin Turn The Expected Rescue Into Tragedy

The friendship between Elrond and Durin remains one of the show’s emotional anchors. Their brief reunion restores the warmth, humor, and trust that have defined their strongest scenes together.

Durin promises to bring the Dwarven army to Eregion. Elrond enters the battle believing his friend will arrive when the Elves need him most.

The episode carefully invokes the familiar language of a last-minute Middle-earth rescue. Elrond looks toward the horizon. The sun rises. A figure appears. The moment seems ready to deliver the cavalry.

The arriving messenger is not Durin. He is covered in arrows and brings the news that the Dwarves are not coming.

Elrond’s confidence collapses. He repeats that Durin will come because the alternative means accepting that the city, the army, and perhaps Galadriel are lost.

Durin’s absence is also grounded in a legitimate crisis. His father has become a danger to Khazad-dûm, and the Ring has given Durin III enough strength and rage to attack anyone who stands between him and the depths of the mountain. Durin IV cannot save Elrond while abandoning his own people.

The story places two duties in direct conflict. Durin cannot honor one without betraying the other.

What Does The Elrond And Galadriel Kiss Mean?

Elrond’s kiss with Galadriel is staged as sleight of hand rather than the beginning of a romance.

Before kissing her, Elrond removes his brooch. The kiss directs every eye toward their faces while he secretly passes the object into Galadriel’s hand. She can then use it to free herself from Adar’s restraint.

Elrond’s apology carries several meanings. He is apologizing for the kiss, for failing to rescue her outright, and for breaking the promise that defeating Sauron must take priority over saving her. The moment Elrond sees Galadriel imprisoned, his strategy changes.

Galadriel’s surprised reaction also keeps the scene from playing as a mutual romantic revelation. She understands what Elrond has done only after receiving the brooch.

The kiss creates enough shock to accomplish its tactical purpose, although the characters’ future family connection makes the choice deliberately provocative for viewers familiar with Tolkien’s larger story.

Could Elrond And Adar Have Worked Together Against Sauron?

Elrond and Adar want the same immediate outcome: Sauron removed from Eregion and prevented from controlling the Rings. Their inability to form an alliance becomes one of the episode’s most frustrating possibilities.

Adar believes Sauron can be defeated only through overwhelming force and access to an Elven Ring. Elrond believes allowing a Ring to fall into Adar’s hands could create another threat that the Elves cannot control.

Elrond’s refusal grows from the warning he received earlier in the season. The Rings may currently be held by people he trusts, but that does not make their power safe. Handing Nenya to Adar would mean surrendering that power to someone actively attacking Eregion with an Orc army.

Galadriel also damaged any possibility of cooperation during her earlier conversation with Adar. She would not promise the future he wanted for the Uruk, and Adar understood that defeating Sauron would not end the Elves’ hostility toward his children.

Their shared enemy cannot overcome their incompatible visions of what happens after Sauron is gone.

Adar Takes Nenya And Changes The Finale

The final battle leaves Adar holding Nenya, Galadriel’s Elven Ring.

Elrond had denied carrying it during the negotiation, but Adar discovers the truth after defeating him. The Ring gives Adar access to a power he believes may be necessary to destroy Sauron.

The reversal also connects the battle directly to Galadriel. She escaped captivity and carried the Nine from Celebrimbor, but the Ring entrusted to her now belongs to the enemy who has spent the season hunting Sauron.

Adar’s possession of Nenya raises several immediate questions for the finale. The Ring may heal or restore him. It could intensify the conflict between him and Sauron. It may give Galadriel and Elrond a reason to negotiate with him. It also creates the possibility that Adar’s children will see the Ring as another sign that their father values his war more than their lives.

Whatever happens next, Nenya has moved from a symbol of Elven preservation into the center of Adar’s tragedy.

Does “Doomed To Die” Build Enough Momentum For The Finale?

Yes. The Battle of Eregion leaves every major character facing a clear and immediate problem.

Celebrimbor has escaped with the Nine but remains inside a city controlled by Sauron. Galadriel must protect the Rings and survive the fall of Eregion. Elrond has lost the battle and Nenya. Adar possesses an Elven Ring while his relationship with the Orcs is breaking. Durin must confront his father beneath Khazad-dûm. Sauron has revealed his true power and is moving closer to becoming the Lord of the Rings.

The episode also leaves Arondir’s fate unresolved and holds Gandalf, Númenor, Isildur, and the Stranger for the finale.

“Doomed To Die” supplies the momentum a penultimate episode needs because its ending is built from consequences rather than a collection of unrelated cliffhangers. Every unresolved question grows from a choice made during the battle.

Our Final Verdict On “Doomed To Die”

Mary’s 4.95 reflects an episode that delivers the battle, character reunions, Tolkien atmosphere, and emotional stakes she wanted while leaving a small amount of room for the finale to go even higher.

Blake’s 4.99 reflects how closely the episode comes to the ideal version of The Rings Of Power. It focuses on the season’s strongest relationships, gives the conflict enough space to breathe, and finally makes the series feel like a natural dramatic extension of the Middle-earth seen in the films.

The troll sequence and a few pieces of the Dwarven crisis could have been clearer. Those issues remain small beside the strength of Celebrimbor and Sauron, the visual confidence of the battle, and the emotional reversal created by Durin’s absence.

“Doomed To Die” understands that spectacle becomes memorable when it destroys something the audience values. Eregion falls because Celebrimbor wanted to create something beautiful. Elrond loses because he trusted his friend to come. Durin breaks that promise because his father and kingdom need him more.

The battle looks like The Lord Of The Rings. The consequences make it feel like The Rings Of Power.

The Rings Of Power Season 2 Episode 6 Recap: What Happens In “Where Is He?”

“Where Is He?” brings Adar’s army closer to Eregion while Sauron pushes Celebrimbor to complete the Nine Rings for Men. Celebrimbor is exhausted, frustrated, and increasingly suspicious, but Annatar manipulates his perception and creates the appearance that everything outside the forge remains peaceful.

Adar holds Galadriel captive and questions her about Sauron. Their conversation reveals how similarly Sauron manipulated them. He saw what each of them desired and made that desire appear attainable. Galadriel wanted an army. Adar wanted children and a home for the Uruk. Both received versions of those wishes shaped by Sauron’s purposes.

Adar wants Galadriel’s help finding and destroying Sauron. Galadriel warns that marching an Orc army toward Eregion may be exactly what Sauron wants. The possibility of an alliance collapses when Adar asks whether the Elves would accept his children after the war. Galadriel cannot give him the future he wants, and Adar uses their conversation to confirm where Sauron is hiding.

In Khazad-dûm, Durin III refuses to provide Annatar with additional mithril. His decision initially appears wise, but his real motivation is greed. The Ring has convinced him to expand the mining operation and keep the mountain’s wealth for himself.

Durin IV and Disa resist the king’s plans. Disa uses her voice and the creatures beneath the mountain to interrupt the miners, while Durin IV confronts his father. Durin III responds with unnatural strength, throwing his son across the room as the Ring’s corruption becomes impossible to deny.

Annatar reacts to Durin III’s refusal by looking into the fire, where the shape of the Balrog appears. Whether Sauron sees what is coming or simply recognizes another opportunity, the moment connects the Ring’s corruption to the danger waiting beneath Khazad-dûm.

In Númenor, Elendil refuses to swear loyalty to Pharazôn. Míriel takes his place in a sea trial and is pulled beneath the water by a massive creature. The creature returns her alive, and the same crowd that had accepted Pharazôn’s rule immediately begins proclaiming Míriel the Queen of the Sea.

Pharazôn uses the palantír and sees Halbrand amid fire and destruction. The vision gives him a new figure to pursue and suggests that Sauron’s influence is moving closer to Númenor.

In Rhûn, Tom Bombadil tells the Stranger that he must remain and complete his training rather than leave to save Nori and Poppy. The Stranger is forced to choose between the larger destiny waiting for him and the friends who gave him a home.

Poppy grows closer to Merimac, also known as Nobody, and their sudden kiss suggests that she may be finding a new family among the Stoors. That possibility also raises questions about what Poppy’s changing life will mean for her relationship with Nori.

Arondir tracks Adar’s army and reaches the outskirts of Eregion. Inside the city, the Elves discover that a dead soldier has washed ashore with a message written in the Black Speech: “Where is he?” Annatar is the only person present who can read it, allowing Sauron to control how the warning is interpreted.

The Rings Of Power Season 2 Episode 6 Review

“Where Is He?” is an episode built around convergence. Nearly every storyline is moving toward a collision: Adar and Sauron at Eregion, Durin and his father beneath Khazad-dûm, Míriel and Pharazôn in Númenor, and the Stranger’s destiny against his loyalty to Nori.

The structure communicates that the season is accelerating. Characters have less time, fewer safe choices, and increasingly limited control over what happens next.

The cost of that design is fragmentation. The episode moves among Eregion, Adar’s camp, Khazad-dûm, Númenor, Rhûn, and Arondir’s journey. Several individual scenes are excellent, but the constant movement prevents some of them from developing as fully as the material deserves.

The hour is most successful when it allows two characters to remain in direct opposition. Galadriel and Adar reveal different responses to Sauron’s manipulation. Durin IV and Durin III turn the corruption of the Rings into a family conflict. Celebrimbor and Annatar transform the making of the Nine into psychological imprisonment.

Those relationships give the episode its strongest emotional and thematic shape.

Galadriel And Adar Almost Become Allies

The conversation between Galadriel and Adar is the episode’s best scene because both characters understand something essential about Sauron that the other needs.

Galadriel understands that Sauron rarely begins with an obvious lie. He studies what a person wants, reflects an idealized version of that desire back to them, and allows them to believe his power has become theirs.

Adar understands that exposing Sauron’s deception is not enough. The problem will continue as long as Sauron remains alive and capable of finding another weakness to exploit.

The scene positions Galadriel and Adar as mirrors. Both believed they could use Sauron to achieve a larger goal. Both were given something they desperately wanted. Both discovered that the gift was designed to serve him.

Adar’s desire remains remarkably consistent. He wants his children to survive and possess a land where they do not have to serve a Dark Lord. His willingness to work with Galadriel depends upon whether the Elves can imagine a future in which the Uruk are allowed to exist.

Galadriel cannot make that promise. Her rejection confirms Adar’s fear that defeating Sauron alongside the Elves would still leave his children facing extermination afterward.

A genuine alliance may have been possible if Galadriel had responded differently. Adar came prepared to gain information either way, but his offer does not feel entirely false. He is willing to cooperate when cooperation might protect the Uruk.

The failure of the scene is therefore larger than a failed negotiation. Galadriel and Adar share an enemy, yet neither can accept the world the other wants to preserve.

Sauron Traps Celebrimbor Inside A False Reality

Sauron’s control over Celebrimbor becomes more direct and more desperate in “Where Is He?”

Annatar is no longer relying only upon carefully chosen truths, praise, and emotional pressure. He creates a false version of Eregion around Celebrimbor, shielding him from the approaching danger and manipulating what he believes is happening outside the forge.

The illusion gives Celebrimbor the calm and concentration necessary to keep working while removing the information that might cause him to stop. It is Sauron’s promise in its purest form: an artificial world where the victim sees the person he wishes to be and believes every obstacle has disappeared.

The scene is strengthened by Bear McCreary’s music. Sauron’s theme is sung with an Elven quality while Annatar presents himself as a divine messenger. The music carries the truth of who he is inside the beauty of the identity he has constructed.

Sauron’s need for the illusion also reveals pressure. Adar is approaching, the mithril supply has been interrupted, and the Nine remain unfinished. Sauron is losing the luxury of subtle manipulation and beginning to impose his will more openly.

That desperation makes him more dangerous while creating the flaws that may eventually allow Celebrimbor to recognize the deception.

What Is Annatar Using To Make The Nine Rings?

Durin III refuses to provide the additional mithril Annatar claims is required to finish the Nine. Later, Annatar presents Celebrimbor with a mysterious powdered material and says it came from a Dwarven smith.

The explanation is immediately suspicious. Durin III has rejected the request, and the episode gives no clear evidence that the material actually came from Khazad-dûm.

Sauron may have stolen mithril, altered another substance, or created something over which he has more direct control. Whatever its origin, the material suggests that the Nine will be more thoroughly corrupted than the Rings created before them.

The Three were made without Sauron physically present during their forging. He influenced the creation of the Seven but did not possess complete control over the process. The Nine now offer him an opportunity to place more of his own power into Rings intended for Men.

That would explain why their eventual bearers become so completely enslaved.

Durin III Makes The Right Choice For The Wrong Reason

Durin III’s refusal to surrender more mithril appears to be a moment of resistance against Annatar. The decision is corrupted by the same Ring he is supposedly withholding resources from.

The king wants to expand the mine, accumulate greater wealth, and make Khazad-dûm more powerful than any other kingdom. His judgment is no longer guided by the welfare of his people. Every decision is becoming an expression of possession.

Durin IV recognizes what is happening and begins acting outside his father’s authority. Disa joins him, using her voice and connection to the mountain as an instrument of resistance.

The confrontation between father and son gives the corruption a physical consequence. Durin III strikes Durin IV with strength that does not appear to be entirely his own. The Ring is changing what the king wants, how he sees his family, and what he is willing to do to anyone who challenges him.

The scene also rhymes with Celebrimbor pushing Annatar into the wall later in the episode. In both cases, a character believes he is acting through his own anger while Sauron’s influence shapes the conflict.

Disa Turns Dwarven Music Into Resistance

Disa’s use of song may appear theatrical, but it grows from the culture the series has established around the Dwarves. Song is part of how they understand stone, work, ancestry, and the mountain itself.

Her voice is therefore more than a performance. It becomes a tool capable of interrupting the mining operation and calling upon the living creatures beneath Khazad-dûm.

The moment allows Disa to resist without attempting to overpower the king directly. She uses the knowledge and cultural authority available to her, turning an element associated with Dwarven unity into a challenge against a corrupted ruler.

It also broadens the conflict beyond Durin IV’s disagreement with his father. The mountain itself appears to be rejecting what Durin III intends to do.

Did The Sea Creature Choose Míriel?

Míriel’s sea trial reverses the political momentum in Númenor. She enters the water in Elendil’s place, is pulled beneath the surface, and returns alive after encountering the enormous sea creature.

The crowd interprets her survival as a judgment from the Valar. Their loyalty immediately swings away from Pharazôn and back toward Míriel, demonstrating how unstable public opinion has become.

The creature appears similar to the one encountered during Sauron’s journey at sea. That raises the possibility that it does more than attack ships or hunt prey. It may be capable of sensing something within the people it encounters.

Míriel’s blindness also changes the experience of the trial. She cannot react to the creature’s appearance, but she still has to endure being pulled beneath the water without knowing whether she will return.

Her survival gives the Faithful a powerful symbol. It does not solve the political crisis. The same people who recently accepted Pharazôn now celebrate Míriel, and their rapid reversal suggests their loyalty could change again just as easily.

What Does Pharazôn See In The Palantír?

Pharazôn sees Halbrand surrounded by fire when he looks into the palantír.

The vision gives him an image of the person connected to the upheaval spreading across Middle-earth, but it does not explain what Halbrand truly is or what Pharazôn should do next.

That uncertainty is dangerous. Pharazôn already wants greater power and believes Númenor should assert itself over the wider world. The palantír may convince him that Halbrand represents either a threat to conquer or a source of power to exploit.

The vision also creates the possibility that Sauron can now see Pharazôn in return. If each has become aware of the other, Númenor is moving closer to Sauron’s influence before its leaders understand the danger he represents.

Tom Bombadil Forces The Stranger To Choose

Tom Bombadil tells the Stranger that leaving to rescue Nori could prevent him from completing the training necessary for his larger purpose.

The conflict is clear: remain with Tom and prepare for the future, or leave before he is ready and attempt to save the people he loves.

The construction resembles a familiar fantasy choice in which a developing hero is warned that abandoning his training will lead to failure. That familiarity makes the scene feel more derivative than the show’s strongest material.

The Stranger’s emotional problem remains compelling. Nori is the person who trusted him before he understood himself. Choosing destiny over her would mean abandoning the relationship that allowed him to discover his capacity for goodness.

His eventual identity matters less in this moment than the kind of person he chooses to become.

What Does Poppy And Nobody’s Romance Mean For Nori?

Poppy’s relationship with Merimac moves quickly from curiosity to romance. The kiss is surrounded by distracting reptile imagery, but the emotional idea beneath it is meaningful.

Poppy lost her family and built a new one with Nori and the Harfoots. The Stoors now offer her something she has not had for a long time: the possibility of settling down, belonging to a community, and creating a home of her own.

That opportunity may also change her relationship with Nori. Poppy followed Nori into danger because their friendship had become her family. A future with Merimac could give Poppy a reason to remain behind when Nori continues traveling with the Stranger.

The fact that Poppy does not immediately tell Nori about the kiss suggests a small separation is already forming between them.

The Elves Bury The Most Important Warning

The Eregion storyline contains a strange communication failure. The Elves approach Annatar by first explaining that bridge traffic has slowed and the usual merchants have disappeared. Only after that background do they reveal that a dead soldier washed ashore carrying a message.

The dead messenger should be the first piece of information discussed. His body is evidence of an approaching military threat, while the message written upon him directly asks for Sauron.

The delay makes the conversation feel unnaturally organized around exposition instead of urgency.

The Black Speech creates a more consequential problem. Annatar is the only person present who claims to understand the message, which allows the person being hunted to control what everyone else believes it means.

Eregion has received a warning about Sauron and handed that warning directly to Sauron for interpretation.

Will The Orcs Turn Against Adar?

The episode continues developing dissatisfaction within Adar’s army. The Orcs have families, personal loyalties, and desires that extend beyond serving their father’s war against Sauron.

Adar believes attacking Eregion is necessary to destroy the enemy who could enslave them again. His children increasingly see the campaign as another conflict in which they are expected to die for someone else’s purpose.

The Orc family introduced earlier in the season gives that resentment a recognizable face. An Orc with a partner and child has something specific to lose when Adar orders another assault.

That creates the conditions Sauron needs to turn the army. He does not have to convince the Orcs that he loves them. He only has to persuade them that Adar has stopped protecting them.

The possibility carries a Shakespearean shape. Adar began the season by leading a collective attack against Sauron. His story may end when the children he calls family surround him and repeat that act against their own father.

Our Final Verdict On “Where Is He?”

Mary’s 4.85 reflects an episode whose energy, character moments, music, and accelerating storylines outweighed the crowded construction. She particularly connected with Arondir, Disa’s use of song, Sauron’s illusion, and the conversation between Galadriel and Adar.

Blake’s 4.62 reflects greater frustration with how frequently the episode moves among plots. The best scenes are strong, but several storylines compete for space before any one of them can fully settle.

The episode still succeeds at its most important job. It brings the season’s conflicts close enough that they can no longer remain separate. Adar is moving toward Eregion. Arondir is following him. Sauron is losing time. Celebrimbor is trapped. Durin IV is preparing to resist his father. Pharazôn has seen Halbrand.

“Where Is He?” may feel scattered because Middle-earth itself is becoming unstable. The pieces are moving faster now, and every road is beginning to lead toward Sauron.

The Rings Of Power Season 2 Episode 5 Recap: What Happens In “Halls Of Stone”?

“Halls Of Stone” follows the immediate consequences of giving the Seven Rings to the Dwarven rulers. King Durin III wears his Ring and discovers that it allows him to perceive the mountain in a new way. He locates the shafts needed to restore sunlight to Khazad-dûm, solving the crisis that had threatened the kingdom’s food supply and future.

The restoration initially appears miraculous. Light returns, the Dwarves celebrate, and Durin III presents himself as the king who has delivered his people from disaster. The Ring’s influence soon begins altering the way he thinks about the mountain, his authority, and the wealth available beneath the stone.

Durin III becomes more possessive of the Ring and increasingly agitated whenever it leaves his hand. He hears whispers while wearing it and briefly panics after removing it, demanding to know where it has gone even though it remains directly in front of him.

Durin IV and Disa recognize that something is changing. Disa senses disturbing movement beneath the mountain, while Durin IV worries that his father’s newfound certainty is leading Khazad-dûm toward danger. The king responds by restoring Durin IV’s title and position as prince, giving his son the recognition he has wanted while making it harder for him to challenge the source of that restoration.

The friendship between the Elves and Dwarves is commemorated through the completed Doors of Durin. Celebrimbor and Narvi reveal the entrance as a symbol of cooperation between Eregion and Khazad-dûm, creating a beautiful monument whose future significance is already known to viewers familiar with Moria.

In Eregion, Celebrimbor discovers that the Seven may have been affected by the deception used to create them. Annatar explains that the Rings involve matters of spirit as well as craft and suggests that Celebrimbor’s lie to Gil-galad introduced corruption into the process.

Annatar presents Celebrimbor with two choices. He can return to Lindon, confess the truth, and accept that the High King may never permit him to forge again. He can also continue deeper into the work and create the Nine Rings for Men in the hope that a new, improved design will correct whatever went wrong with the Seven.

Celebrimbor chooses to keep forging.

Mirdania tests one of the unfinished Rings and briefly disappears into the Unseen World. She sees a terrifying figure connected to the forge, but Annatar convinces her that the figure was Celebrimbor. He then draws her closer by comparing her appearance to Galadriel, using admiration and physical intimacy to redirect her fear.

Gil-galad wears Vilya and experiences a series of troubling visions involving dead fish, destruction, dark clouds, and Sauron’s crown. He warns that the Elves may be unable to fight the armies of Adar and Sauron at the same time.

In Númenor, Pharazôn moves against the Faithful. Kemen leads an attack on the old shrine, confronts Elendil and Valandil, and desecrates the sacred space. Valandil defeats him and prepares to walk away after Elendil orders him to lower his sword.

Kemen retrieves another weapon and stabs Valandil from behind, killing him as Elendil watches. The murder leaves Elendil grieving another young man he treated like a son and gives Pharazôn’s government a new opportunity to blame the violence on the Faithful.

The Rings Of Power Season 2 Episode 5 Review

“Halls Of Stone” demonstrates why some parts of The Rings Of Power generate far more emotional investment than others. The most successful storylines are built around relationships that have been tested, changed, and complicated over time.

Durin III and Durin IV carry a history of love, pride, disappointment, and inheritance. Disa and Durin IV share a marriage strong enough to support disagreement. Celebrimbor and Annatar are connected through admiration, ambition, dependency, and manipulation. Elendil and Valandil have developed the trust of a captain and a loyal young soldier.

The Rings intensify conflicts that already exist inside those relationships. Durin IV wants his father’s respect, which makes the restoration of his title emotionally powerful and morally dangerous. Celebrimbor wants to preserve his legacy, which makes Annatar’s threat of losing the forge almost impossible for him to resist.

The episode becomes less compelling when its relationships feel less developed. The political ideas in Númenor are significant, though much of the conflict has been carried by rapid shifts in public loyalty and characters whose emotional connections remain thin. Valandil’s death lands because he has an established bond with Elendil. Kemen’s actions work because his hunger for Pharazôn’s approval gives the cruelty a recognizable source.

The larger lesson is simple: mythology creates scale, while relationships create consequence.

The Dwarven Rings Save Khazad-dûm And Begin Its Tragedy

The Seven Rings appear to accomplish exactly what the Dwarves needed. Khazad-dûm had lost the shafts that brought light into the mountain, leaving its crops and people in danger. Durin III uses the Ring to find a new path through the stone and restores the sunlight.

The success matters because corruption rarely begins with an obviously terrible result. The Ring saves the kingdom. It gives Durin III information nobody else could access and produces a visible benefit for thousands of people.

That victory gives the Ring credibility. Durin III has a reason to trust it, his people have a reason to celebrate it, and anyone questioning its power can be accused of rejecting the thing that saved Khazad-dûm.

The danger begins in the way the Ring changes Durin III’s relationship with what he has saved. The mountain becomes something he can perceive, command, and extract value from without limit. His desire to protect the kingdom begins shifting into a belief that all of its wealth belongs to him.

The Ring does not need to invent his love for Khazad-dûm. It turns that love into possession.

Durin III Gives His Son Exactly What He Wants

The confrontation between Durin III and Durin IV is one of the episode’s strongest scenes because the father does not silence his son through punishment. He gives Durin IV the title and recognition he has wanted.

Durin IV enters the conversation prepared to challenge the Ring and warn his father. Durin III restores him as prince, effectively welcoming him back into the family and the government of Khazad-dûm.

Accepting the title creates an emotional trap. Durin IV has spent much of the series trying to repair his relationship with his father. The restoration appears to offer that reconciliation, but it arrives only after the Ring has begun changing the king.

Disa immediately understands the problem. The title places Durin IV close enough to the throne to help his people, while tying his renewed status to the father he may eventually need to oppose.

The scene captures how power moves through relationships. Durin III does not have to convince his son that the Ring is safe. He gives Durin IV something valuable enough to make resistance more complicated.

Bear McCreary Turns The Khazad-dûm Theme Into A Warning

Bear McCreary’s score tells the story of Khazad-dûm before the characters fully understand what is happening.

The familiar musical identity of the Dwarves has usually carried strength, community, labor, and celebration. In “Halls Of Stone,” the theme bends into a darker shape while Durin III moves through the mountain under the Ring’s influence.

The melody remains recognizable, but sour notes and minor harmonies disturb the expected resolution. The music allows the audience to hear the corruption inside a moment that the characters are celebrating as a victory.

When sunlight returns and the Dwarves cry out for Khazad-dûm, the theme becomes joyful again. That shift captures the tragedy. Their happiness is real. Their kingdom has been saved. The audience can also hear that something dangerous has entered the foundation of that salvation.

The score preserves both emotions at once: the triumph above and the warning below.

Why The Doors Of Durin Matter

The Doors of Durin are unveiled as a celebration of friendship between the Elves of Eregion and the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm. Celebrimbor and Narvi create an entrance designed to welcome cooperation between their peoples.

The beauty of the moment comes from knowing what the doors will eventually represent. Their inscription, hidden design, and password will survive long after the partnership that created them has faded.

The series uses the audience’s knowledge of the future to add sadness rather than remove suspense. Viewers may know where the doors will stand and what will eventually happen to Moria. The emotional question is how an object created through friendship becomes the entrance to a ruined kingdom.

That makes the Doors of Durin an effective use of prequel storytelling. The scene celebrates what exists now while allowing the future to cast a shadow across it.

Celebrimbor Knows Annatar Is Manipulating Him

Celebrimbor recognizes Annatar’s technique with remarkable accuracy. He understands that Annatar plants ideas inside another person’s mind and allows that person to experience the idea as his own.

Recognition does not free Celebrimbor because Annatar’s argument is aimed at something stronger than logic. Celebrimbor fears losing the ability to create.

Confessing to Gil-galad would mean admitting that the Seven were forged under a lie and accepting that the High King may never trust him with another project. Continuing the work allows Celebrimbor to believe that he can repair the damage, protect his reputation, and complete the achievement that will define his legacy.

Annatar frames the decision so that honesty feels like surrender and further deception feels like responsibility.

Celebrimbor chooses the path that preserves his identity as a great smith. The choice comes from pride, shame, fear, and a genuine desire to correct the Seven. Those motives make the manipulation effective because Celebrimbor can experience the decision as his own.

Why Celebrimbor Agrees To Forge The Nine Rings

Celebrimbor agrees to create the Nine because Annatar convinces him that better work can repair the moral and spiritual flaw introduced into the Seven.

The logic resembles someone attempting to solve a harmful decision by committing more deeply to the same process. Celebrimbor has already risked his reputation and deceived Gil-galad. Confession would force him to face the consequences immediately.

Forging the Nine offers the possibility that success will erase the need for confession. If the new Rings work perfectly, Celebrimbor can tell himself that the earlier problem has been corrected and that the deception ultimately served a greater good.

Annatar understands that Celebrimbor’s shame can be converted into urgency. Every additional mistake makes stopping more difficult because stopping would require admitting the full scale of what has already happened.

The Nine begin with Sauron’s design, but Celebrimbor’s choice gives that design a path into the forge.

Sauron Uses Truth As A Weapon

Annatar’s manipulation remains compelling because much of what he tells Celebrimbor is true. Deception entered the making of the Seven. Gil-galad would likely respond harshly if Celebrimbor confessed. The Rings may contain a flaw that needs to be addressed.

Sauron shapes those truths into a false choice. He leaves out every path that would reduce his control and presents continued forging as the only useful response.

This pattern also changes the way Halbrand’s earlier conversations with Galadriel can be understood. Halbrand repeatedly said that he did not want to return to the Southlands and warned Galadriel that she did not know what he had done before arriving in Númenor.

There may have been genuine desire inside those statements. Sauron can tell the truth about a feeling while still using that truth to influence the person listening.

His greatest ability is understanding which truth another person is prepared to hear and what that truth will make them do next.

Galadriel, Sauron And The Desire To Keep Fighting

Galadriel and Sauron are repeatedly framed as reflections of one another. Both are driven by an inability to stop pursuing the conflict that has defined them.

When Galadriel tells Halbrand that she continues fighting because she cannot stop, he recognizes something familiar in her. She experiences that drive as resistance against evil. Sauron experiences it as the need to impose order and continue remaking the world.

The similarity explains part of their connection without making their choices equivalent. Galadriel remains capable of questioning where her desire is leading her. Sauron uses his desire as permission to control everyone around him.

Celebrimbor now occupies the same dangerous territory. He cannot stop forging because stopping would force him to confront who he has become and what his work may have created.

Mirdania Sees The Unseen World

Mirdania’s test of an unfinished Ring produces one of the episode’s most important accidents. The Ring makes her invisible and allows her to perceive the Unseen World.

She sees a terrifying figure connected to the forge and returns convinced that something dangerous is present. Annatar immediately transforms her discovery into another weapon against Celebrimbor, suggesting that the figure she saw was the great smith whose behavior has become increasingly unstable.

Sauron then uses praise and physical familiarity to keep Mirdania close. He compares her to Galadriel and brushes her hair, creating an intimate moment that redirects her attention from what she witnessed toward the approval he is offering.

The failed Ring also reveals a combination of powers that will later become central to the One Ring: invisibility and access to the Unseen World. Sauron may not have intended the result, but he now has the opportunity to observe it and understand what the experiment has produced.

Valandil’s Death Makes Númenor’s Conflict Personal

Valandil’s death gives the political conflict in Númenor a personal consequence. Kemen enters the shrine carrying his father’s authority and uses that power to provoke the Faithful.

Valandil defeats him and chooses to lower his weapon when Elendil intervenes. The decision should end the confrontation. Kemen uses the mercy extended to him as an opportunity to attack from behind.

The murder establishes Kemen as more than an irritating extension of Pharazôn. His desire to prove himself to his father makes him willing to kill a man who has already spared his life.

Elendil is left with another devastating loss. He believes Isildur is dead, has been betrayed by Eärien, and now watches Valandil die after following his command to stand down.

The guilt matters because Valandil treated Elendil with the respect and loyalty of a son. His death turns Pharazôn’s political takeover into something Elendil has suffered inside his own family.

Kemen Is Driven By His Father’s Approval

Kemen’s cruelty grows from a relationship with Pharazôn built around conditional approval. Pharazôn tells his son that his mother had thoughts about him but withholds the complete message until Kemen proves himself useful.

The tactic gives Kemen an emotional reason to carry out his father’s orders. Political authority, family identity, and the memory of his mother are folded into the same test.

Kemen enters the shrine desperate to demonstrate strength. Valandil humiliates him physically, which makes the need to recover control even stronger. The murder becomes an act of revenge and a performance intended for a father who is not present.

Like Celebrimbor, Kemen is manipulated through the fear that he will lose the identity and recognition he wants. The scale is different, but the underlying process is similar.

Why The Strongest Rings Of Power Stories Are About Relationships

The best stories in “Halls Of Stone” begin with relationships the audience already understands.

Elrond and Durin became compelling through friendship, conflict, forgiveness, and mutual trust. Durin IV and Durin III carry the emotional history of a father and son who love one another while disagreeing about the future of their kingdom. Celebrimbor and Annatar have developed a relationship based on creative ambition and carefully engineered dependency.

Each relationship changes when a character makes a consequential choice. Durin IV accepts his restored title. Celebrimbor agrees to continue forging. Durin III chooses to trust the Ring. Elendil asks Valandil to lower his weapon.

The plot works because those choices alter bonds that matter.

Storylines built primarily around mysteries, destinations, or future identities have a more difficult time generating the same investment. A mystery can create curiosity, while a relationship creates the fear that something valuable may be lost.

“Halls Of Stone” becomes one of the season’s strongest episodes because the Rings finally threaten relationships the series has taught us to care about.

What Does Gil-galad See In His Ring Visions?

Gil-galad’s visions include fish out of water, destruction, dark smoke, and the shape of Sauron’s crown. The images suggest widespread death and the expansion of Sauron’s power, though their exact meaning remains difficult to interpret.

The warning is enough for Gil-galad to understand that the Elves are approaching a conflict larger than a single army or kingdom. He believes they may be unable to confront Adar and Sauron simultaneously.

Sauron does not yet command the visible army Gil-galad fears, but dark forces are already moving across Middle-earth. Adar’s Orcs are marching, creatures are emerging from corrupted lands, and Sauron is creating the objects he will use to dominate future rulers.

The visions imply that Gil-galad understands the shape of the danger before he can identify every piece of it.

Our Final Verdict On “Halls Of Stone”

Mary’s 4.85 reflects how strongly she connected with Khazad-dûm, the Dwarves, Bear McCreary’s music, and the growing tragedy surrounding the Seven Rings. Her greatest frustration came from Kemen and the death of Valandil.

Blake’s 4.82 reflects an episode that finally delivers on the central promise of the series. The Rings are being created, distributed, and integrated into relationships that give their corruption meaning. His strongest moments were the Doors of Durin and the confrontation between Durin III and Durin IV.

A few visual and logistical moments strain credibility, including Disa’s extended pursuit of the rolling stone and the enormous hidden chamber located so close to a familiar passage. Those details remain minor beside the episode’s emotional and thematic success.

“Halls Of Stone” understands that the Rings do not become dangerous because everyone who accepts one is foolish. They become dangerous because each Ring appears capable of protecting something its bearer genuinely loves.

Durin III sees a way to save Khazad-dûm. Celebrimbor sees a way to preserve his work. Sauron sees the desire inside both men and understands how to turn it into a chain.

Arondir, Isildur, and Estrid encounter the Ents, rescue Theo, and confront the damage people have done to the living world around them.

The episode contains plenty of wonder, atmosphere, lore, and visual invention. Its more difficult question is whether all of that exploration strengthens the immediate story or makes the season feel as though it has stepped away from its strongest dramatic engine. Mary is happy simply spending time in Middle-earth. Blake needs the detour to create clearer pressure on the central conflict.

The Rings Of Power Season 2 Episode 4 Recap: What Happens In “Eldest”?

“Eldest” follows Elrond and Galadriel as they lead a company of Elves toward Eregion. Their path is blocked by a destroyed bridge, and Galadriel believes Sauron is responsible. Elrond refuses to trust the warning because it comes through Nenya, the Ring Galadriel continues wearing despite his objections.

The company takes another route and enters a dangerous region where the Elven messengers sent to warn Celebrimbor have disappeared. The group encounters the Barrow-wights, ancient dead warriors who attack from the darkness and can rebuild themselves after being struck.

Elrond understands that the weapons buried alongside the dead must be used against them. The Elves recover the blades and defeat the Barrow-wights, but members of the company are killed and injured during the attack.

Galadriel uses Nenya to heal a wounded Elf. The Ring forces the arrow from his body and closes a wound that otherwise appeared fatal. Elrond sees the Ring perform an act of genuine preservation, complicating his belief that nothing connected to Sauron’s influence can be trusted.

As the company continues, Galadriel senses another threat approaching. She gives Nenya to Elrond and remains behind to hold off the Orcs. She fights alone until Adar appears and catches the flaming arrow she fires toward him. The episode ends with Galadriel in the hands of the enemy she once captured and interrogated.

In Rhûn, the Stranger meets Tom Bombadil, who calls himself the Eldest and claims to remember the world before the first raindrop and acorn. Tom rescues the Stranger from an ancient tree, offers him shelter, and begins pointing him toward a larger purpose.

Tom tells the Stranger that the danger in Rhûn extends beyond the Dark Wizard. The Stranger may also have a role to play in the struggle against Sauron, although the episode does not clearly establish how much he already knows about that threat.

Nori and Poppy survive the magical blast that separated them from the Stranger. They are found by Merimac, also called Nobody, who brings them to a hidden settlement of Stoors.

The Stoors reveal that their people once imagined a place with soft green hills where families could settle permanently and build homes beneath the earth. The story suggests that the migrations of the Stoors and Harfoots may eventually lead their descendants toward the Shire.

Elsewhere, Isildur, Estrid, and Arondir continue searching for Theo. Estrid’s betrothed is found among the people captured by the Ents, confirming that at least part of the story she told Isildur was true.

The Ents are furious because humans and Orcs have injured the forest and killed living trees. Arondir acknowledges that he has also felled a tree in the past. His honest apology and respect for the Entwife’s grief allow the group to move toward peace.

The captives are released, including Theo. Arondir invites him to leave, but Theo says he has promises of his own to keep and chooses another path.

The Rings Of Power Season 2 Episode 4 Review

“Eldest” is built around the pleasure of discovery. The episode visits ancient graves, living forests, forgotten settlements, magical homes, and creatures whose memories reach beyond the people currently moving through Middle-earth.

That approach gives the hour an expansive, almost storybook quality. The world feels older and stranger because the characters repeatedly encounter lives, histories, and powers they did not know were waiting beyond the road.

The same construction creates a problem for the season’s momentum. Episode 3 ended with Sauron successfully entering Eregion as Annatar and deepening his hold over Celebrimbor. That relationship had become the clearest source of pressure in the story. “Eldest” removes both men entirely and divides its attention among several quests whose connection to the forging of the Rings remains distant.

Mary experiences those journeys as part of the value of the series. Time spent with Tom Bombadil, the Stoors, the Ents, and the Barrow-wights makes Middle-earth feel inhabited and allows the show to explore the history surrounding its central conflict.

Blake experiences much of the same material as a detour. The episode has memorable sequences, but several stories feel arranged beside the main narrative rather than pushing directly against it.

The strongest material splits the difference. Elrond and Galadriel’s journey introduces ancient lore while changing their relationship and the ownership of Nenya. Galadriel’s capture connects the wandering episode back to Adar, Sauron, and Eregion.

What Is Tom Bombadil Doing In The Rings Of Power?

Tom Bombadil is presented as a being so old that the normal categories of the world do not seem to apply to him. He calls himself the Eldest, remembers the earliest natural life in Middle-earth, sings to the world around him, and appears able to command ancient trees without effort.

Mary responds to Tom as a source of comfort. His home, plants, songs, animals, fire, and gentle authority create a warm refuge inside a desert that has become hostile and empty. Rory Kinnear’s performance also gives Tom the kindness and eccentricity of a mentor who could easily belong inside another beloved fantasy world.

Blake has a harder time understanding his function. Tom possesses extraordinary knowledge and power, yet he appears content to remain in his home while telling the Stranger that the responsibility for confronting evil belongs to someone else.

The episode suggests that Tom’s role is not to fight the larger war himself. He recognizes people whose choices may change the world and places them on the path they need to follow.

That makes him less of a traditional hero and more of a guardian of direction. He does not complete the Stranger’s journey. He helps the Stranger understand that the journey has a purpose.

Is Tom Bombadil Turning The Stranger Into Gandalf?

Tom’s interaction with the Stranger strengthens the idea that the Stranger is moving toward the identity and role associated with Gandalf.

The Stranger arrives without a name, staff, clear mission, or full understanding of his abilities. Tom possesses knowledge about his origin and appears prepared to teach him how to use power without being consumed by it.

The mentor relationship also gives the Stranger a choice. He can continue reacting to immediate danger, chasing Nori, and trying to solve each crisis as it appears. He can also develop the wisdom and control necessary to face the Dark Wizard and eventually participate in the fight against Sauron.

The episode leaves a gap in that conversation. The Stranger appears to recognize Sauron’s name and importance even though the series has not clearly shown where he gained that knowledge.

That missing connective tissue makes the scene feel as though it is moving him toward the required destination before every step of the journey has been dramatized.

The larger direction remains clear. Tom is helping the Stranger become the kind of wizard who will eventually guide others rather than simply unleash power around them.

Why The Dark Wizard Still Does Not Feel Dangerous

The Dark Wizard remains one of the least developed threats in Season 2. He is discussed as a significant force in Rhûn, but the audience has spent most of its time watching him sit in the same chamber, issue orders, and send masked servants after other characters.

Blake’s frustration comes from the lack of demonstrated power. Sauron manipulates people, changes identities, controls political outcomes, and transforms the emotional reality of every scene he enters. The Dark Wizard talks about danger without yet creating a comparable experience.

A secondary villain does not need to rival Sauron. He does need a specific identity, behavior, or action that allows the audience to understand why the Stranger should fear him.

“Eldest” increases his narrative importance through Tom’s warning. It does not substantially increase his dramatic presence.

The Barrow-wights Give The Episode Its Best Horror Sequence

The Barrow-wight attack is the episode’s most effective piece of action and horror.

The sequence establishes clear spatial relationships between the characters, the burial sites, the weapons, and the creatures attacking them. The dead emerge from dark openings, drag victims with chains, and reconstruct their bodies after ordinary attacks.

Elrond’s knowledge gives the scene its solution. The group must use weapons buried alongside the dead because those blades remain connected to the power capable of defeating them.

The moment allows the series to draw from the larger supernatural history of Middle-earth while keeping the rules understandable inside the scene itself. The audience does not need a complete lecture about the Barrow-wights. We see what they can do, why normal weapons fail, and what the Elves must risk to escape.

The creatures also answer an existing story question. The missing messengers did not simply become lost on the road to Eregion. They were taken by something ancient and deadly.

Elrond And Galadriel Are Fighting About More Than The Ring

Elrond refuses to trust Galadriel’s warnings because he believes Nenya may be shaping what she sees and what she wants others to do.

Galadriel believes the visions are giving her information they cannot afford to ignore. Every delay increases the danger facing Celebrimbor and Eregion.

The conflict grows from what happened with Halbrand. Galadriel trusted Sauron, brought him to Eregion, and concealed his identity after discovering the truth. Elrond now sees another object connected to the same deception influencing her decisions.

Galadriel experiences his caution as refusal to accept evidence. Elrond experiences her certainty as another version of the obsession that allowed Sauron to manipulate her.

Both positions contain truth. The Ring correctly warns Galadriel that their path is dangerous and later saves an injured Elf. Elrond is also right that power capable of influencing perception should not be obeyed without question.

Their argument becomes compelling because neither character is simply standing between the other and the correct answer. They are trying to determine whether a useful power can also be dangerous.

Nenya Heals The Wounded Elf

Galadriel’s use of Nenya gives Elrond direct evidence that the Three can preserve life.

The Ring forces an arrow from the wounded Elf’s body and restores him after the injury appears certain to kill him. The act is immediate, visible, and difficult to dismiss.

Elrond has treated the Rings primarily as extensions of Sauron’s manipulation. The healing suggests that their power cannot be understood only through the person who inspired their creation.

The Three were made for the preservation of the Elves, and Nenya appears capable of fulfilling that purpose. The danger lies in whether a good result can justify dependence upon a power whose complete nature remains unknown.

Elrond’s future relationship with an Elven Ring becomes more understandable after this scene. He has witnessed the risk, but he has also witnessed something undeniably valuable.

Why Galadriel Gives Nenya To Elrond

Galadriel gives Nenya to Elrond before turning to face the approaching Orcs.

The choice protects the Ring from capture while showing that Galadriel still trusts Elrond despite their disagreement. He may reject her judgment, question her visions, and fear the object she has been wearing. She still believes he is the person most capable of carrying it to safety.

Giving up the Ring also changes the meaning of her decision to stay behind. Galadriel is no longer fighting with the advantage Nenya provides. She knowingly separates herself from the power that healed one of their companions and enters the battle alone.

Elrond must now carry the object he distrusts while living with the knowledge that Galadriel remained behind to give the rest of the company time to escape.

The physical transfer turns their philosophical conflict into responsibility.

Will Galadriel And Adar Become Allies?

Galadriel’s capture brings her back into direct contact with Adar, reversing the relationship they had in Season 1.

Adar is marching toward Eregion because he believes Sauron is there. Galadriel also needs to reach Eregion and prevent Sauron from completing whatever he has begun with Celebrimbor.

That shared enemy creates the possibility of a temporary alliance. Adar has information, an army, and a clear understanding of how dangerous Sauron can become. Galadriel understands Sauron’s manipulation and knows that confronting him alone would be reckless.

The obstacle is Galadriel’s inability to see Adar and the Uruk as anything other than enemies. Adar’s goal is not simply the destruction of Sauron. He wants a future for the children he has gathered around him.

Galadriel may accept his help without accepting the world he wants. Adar may use her knowledge without trusting that the Elves would ever allow his people to live in peace.

Their alliance can work only as long as Sauron remains the greater threat.

The Ents Give Arondir A Chance To Answer For The Past

The Ents are not presented merely as familiar creatures appearing for recognition. Their anger grows from damage committed by people moving through the forest.

The Entwife asks whether Arondir has ever harmed a living tree. He admits that he has.

His honesty matters because the series showed him make that choice while imprisoned by the Orcs. Arondir felled the tree after another captive was killed and more lives were threatened. He apologized to the tree before cutting it down, but necessity did not erase the wound.

The scene allows the show to call back to its own history and make an earlier choice part of the present conflict. Arondir cannot claim innocence. He can acknowledge what happened, express genuine regret, and ask forgiveness.

His respect for the Entwife’s grief creates a path toward peace. The sequence shows why Arondir remains one of Mary’s favorite characters: he combines strength with an ability to recognize the life and pain around him.

Why Mary Is Completely Out On Estrid

Estrid’s betrothed is real, confirming that she did not invent every part of her story. That revelation does not restore Mary’s trust in her.

Isildur releases Estrid and offers to bring her somewhere safe. Estrid still reaches for his weapon when she believes her standing among the Wild Men may be threatened.

The moment reinforces the uncertainty that has defined her character. Estrid may care about Isildur, remain loyal to her betrothed, fear rejection from both groups, and act primarily to preserve herself. The episode leaves all of those possibilities active at once.

Arondir appears to anticipate what she will do. He leaves the weapon available and watches her choice, allowing Estrid to reveal where her instincts lead when she believes nobody is stopping her.

Isildur continues touching her face, protecting her, and behaving as though affection can resolve the questions surrounding her loyalty. Mary has reached the point where that relationship creates frustration instead of romantic tension.

What Promise Does Theo Have To Keep?

Theo refuses Arondir’s offer to leave and says he has promises of his own to keep.

The episode does not explain who received that promise or what Theo intends to do next. He may feel responsible for helping the people displaced from the Southlands, rescuing someone still in danger, finding answers about his family, or completing something he promised himself after Bronwyn’s death.

The lack of specificity makes the line feel more like a device for separating Theo from Arondir than the beginning of a clear new goal.

Theo has spent much of the series moving among other people’s stories. He was connected to the broken sword, the fall of the Southlands, Bronwyn, Arondir, and the creation of Mordor. “Eldest” gives him independence without yet giving that independence a defined direction.

The mystery may eventually become meaningful. In this episode, it leaves Theo walking away with a purpose the audience cannot evaluate.

Do The Stoors Lead To The Shire?

The Stoors give Nori and Poppy a new understanding of their people’s history.

The hidden settlement is a permanent community adapted to the desert, unlike the Harfoots’ seasonal migration. The Stoors remember an older dream of soft hills, fertile ground, and homes built beneath the earth.

Mary connects that dream to the Shire. The Harfoots have been traveling without fully understanding that their wandering may have begun as a search for the kind of homeland the Stoors still describe.

The scene adds emotional meaning to familiar Hobbit imagery. The round doors, green hills, gardens, and deeply rooted community of the Shire become the fulfillment of a hope carried across generations.

That is the kind of prequel connection Mary enjoys most. The episode is not simply pointing at a recognizable future object. It is giving that future an ancestral longing.

What Do The Stoors Mean For Nori And Poppy?

The Stoors offer Nori and Poppy something neither has encountered before: relatives whose lives developed differently from the Harfoots.

Nori remains drawn toward movement, discovery, and the Stranger. Poppy has already lost her family and may be more open to the security of a settled community.

The difference creates a possible future conflict between them. Their friendship has survived because they shared the same journey and repeatedly chose one another. A permanent home may give Poppy a reason to stop following Nori into danger.

Merimac’s interest in Poppy provides the first suggestion that she could build a life among the Stoors. The interaction is still light and comic, complete with bare feet and an extended Jack Johnson discussion in the podcast, but the emotional possibility is real.

Poppy may have found the home her ancestors were searching for before Nori is ready to stop searching.

The Direction Makes Middle-earth Feel Larger

Blake’s strongest production note is the episode’s use of extended camera movement.

The opening shot moves through the Elven environment and follows the company as it prepares to depart. Another extended movement introduces the Stoors’ settlement by carrying the audience through the hidden community rather than presenting it as a collection of disconnected sets.

These shots give the locations physical continuity. The viewer understands how people move through the space and how the environments are organized around them.

The map transitions serve a similar function. Ink, geography, and visual features transform into the locations the characters are about to enter. With so many kingdoms, roads, forests, settlements, and names in play, those transitions help orient the audience before the story moves again.

The visual confidence is one of the reasons the episode can feel expansive even when its narrative focus becomes diffuse.

Is “Eldest” A Side Quest?

Blake describes much of “Eldest” as side-quest material because Sauron and Celebrimbor disappear immediately after becoming the season’s strongest storyline.

Tom Bombadil, the Stoors, the Ents, the nameless creature, and the Dark Wizard all expand the world. Several of those stories do not create immediate consequences for the forging of the Rings or the danger approaching Eregion.

Mary does not see exploration as wasted time. Middle-earth is part of the reason she watches the series, and a journey can matter by revealing culture, ancestry, magic, or character even when it does not push directly toward the next major battle.

The useful distinction is whether the detour changes something.

The Barrow-wights change Elrond’s understanding of the danger and lead him to witness Nenya’s healing power. The Ents force Arondir to acknowledge a choice from his past. The Stoors give Poppy and Nori a possible destination. Tom gives the Stranger a clearer responsibility. Galadriel’s journey ends with Adar capturing her.

Those changes keep the episode from becoming irrelevant. The hour still feels less urgent because its stories are distributed across so many different roads.

Our Final Verdict On “Eldest”

Mary’s 4.8 reflects the joy she finds in simply inhabiting Middle-earth. She loves the Stoors’ connection to the future Shire, Tom Bombadil’s warmth, the Ents, Arondir’s compassion, and the sense that the world contains histories beyond the immediate plot.

Blake’s 4 reflects an episode that feels like a step away from the season’s strongest material. He responds to the Barrow-wights, the one-shot direction, the map transitions, and the Elrond–Galadriel conflict. Tom Bombadil, the Dark Wizard, and parts of the Stoor story feel theatrical or disconnected from the pressure created in Eregion.

“Eldest” succeeds most when its exploration creates a choice or changes a relationship. Elrond takes possession of the Ring he fears. Galadriel sacrifices her safety and falls into Adar’s hands. Arondir admits the harm he once caused. Poppy sees the possibility of a home.

The episode finds wonder off the main road. Its challenge is making sure every road eventually leads back to the story.

Estrid describes that sacrifice as precious, introducing a word and an idea that may eventually shape why Isildur cannot surrender the One Ring after defeating Sauron.

The Rings Of Power Season 2 Episode 3 Recap: What Happens In “The Eagle And The Sceptre”?

“The Eagle And The Sceptre” reveals that Isildur survived the destruction of the Southlands. Berek senses that his rider is still alive and returns to find him trapped inside a nest filled with enormous spiders. The horse fights through the creatures and helps Isildur escape.

Isildur meets Estrid, a survivor who claims that her betrothed is missing. She helps him navigate the dangerous territory surrounding Mordor, though Isildur eventually discovers that she carries Adar’s brand. Estrid has attempted to burn the mark away, leaving her true allegiance and intentions uncertain.

Wild Men steal Berek, giving Isildur another reason to continue traveling with Estrid. Their developing connection is complicated by her secrets, her missing betrothed, and Isildur’s growing desire to believe that he can save her.

Arondir returns and immediately demonstrates why he remains one of the series’ most capable fighters. He intercepts the danger surrounding the survivors, reunites with the people displaced from the Southlands, and continues grieving Bronwyn’s death.

Theo struggles with that loss and with Arondir’s place in his life. He travels away from the settlement, finds the Wild Men, and is taken by an unseen force at the end of the episode.

In Eregion, Durin IV and Disa meet Annatar and Celebrimbor. The Elves present the possibility of creating Rings that could help the Dwarves restore Khazad-dûm. Durin remains suspicious of Annatar and immediately questions the suggestion that Elrond has spoken warmly about him.

Annatar understands that Celebrimbor’s greatest weakness is his belief that his work can change the fate of Middle-earth. Celebrimbor decides to proceed with the creation of additional Rings even though Gil-galad has not granted permission.

Celebrimbor experiences the decision as an assertion of his independence. Annatar barely needs to issue an instruction. He creates the emotional conditions in which defying the High King feels like the courageous and necessary choice.

Durin IV also returns to his father and begins repairing their damaged relationship. Their apology quickly gives way to practical concerns about Khazad-dûm, mithril, and the possible salvation being offered by Eregion.

In Mordor, Adar continues preparing for war against Sauron. The episode shows an Orc with a partner and child, suggesting that at least some of Adar’s followers want security and family life rather than another endless campaign.

Adar also welcomes Damrod, a massive hill-troll whose presence gives his army a dangerous new weapon. Damrod’s arrival is accompanied by one of Bear McCreary’s most aggressive musical choices, turning the troll into an event before the coming battle begins.

In Númenor, Míriel prepares for her coronation. She chooses to wear white in honor of her father and the continuity she hopes to preserve.

Eärien disrupts the ceremony by revealing the palantír and using it as evidence against Míriel and the Faithful. The crowd turns against the Queen Regent just as a Great Eagle arrives at the coronation.

The Eagle appears to be responding to Míriel, but Pharazôn walks toward it and allows the crowd to interpret its arrival as an endorsement of him. He never needs to claim that the Eagle chose him. He recognizes the opportunity, occupies the image, and lets the people create the meaning he wants.

The Rings Of Power Season 2 Episode 3 Review

“The Eagle And The Sceptre” contains several compelling ideas competing for attention across Middle-earth.

Isildur’s survival begins connecting his present guilt to the future decision audiences already know he will make. Adar’s Orcs gain a more complicated emotional identity. Durin’s relationship with his father creates a path for the Rings to enter Khazad-dûm. Annatar and Celebrimbor turn the creation of those Rings into an intimate study of manipulation.

The episode’s effectiveness changes depending on the relationships carrying each storyline.

Celebrimbor and Annatar work because the audience understands what each character wants from the other. Durin IV and Durin III work because their conflict grows from a recognizable history between a father and son. Isildur’s story begins gaining shape through grief, guilt, and his mother’s sacrifice.

Númenor remains more dependent upon political movement. The coronation contains strong images, costumes, and symbolic choices, though the emotional relationships surrounding the power struggle still need greater development.

The Eagle gives the sequence a memorable climax. The event is also heavily announced before it happens, which makes the arrival feel like the completion of a setup rather than a genuine disruption.

Mary responds strongly to the Dwarves, Arondir, Isildur, Berek, and the expanding complexity of the Orcs. Blake finds the spiders extremely effective and deeply unpleasant while remaining less invested in Númenor and Theo.

Annatar And Celebrimbor May Be The Show’s Strongest Relationship

The relationship between Annatar and Celebrimbor is compelling because it transforms a piece of mythology into a character tragedy.

The audience already knows that Sauron will manipulate Celebrimbor into forging the Rings. The dramatic question becomes how a brilliant and experienced Elf reaches a decision that will eventually destroy his city and reshape Middle-earth.

Annatar does not overpower Celebrimbor or present him with an obvious command. He studies the identity Celebrimbor has built around his craft.

Celebrimbor wants to create something that will stand beside the work of Fëanor. He wants his forge to become the place where Middle-earth is saved. He also wants recognition from Gil-galad while resenting the High King’s ability to restrict his work.

Annatar converts those desires into a path. He makes Celebrimbor feel that caution is cowardice, obedience is creative surrender, and continued forging is the only way to fulfill his purpose.

Celebrimbor then announces that he will proceed. The choice sounds like independence because Annatar has already shaped the boundaries around it.

Sauron Makes Manipulation Feel Like Choice

Sauron’s most effective technique is giving another person a solution that appears to emerge from their own mind.

Celebrimbor recognizes an opportunity to help the Dwarves, strengthen cooperation between kingdoms, and create another historic achievement. Each motive contains something sincere.

Annatar supplies the pressure surrounding those motives. Khazad-dûm is in danger. The Dwarves need help. Celebrimbor possesses the skill to provide it. Gil-galad’s refusal now appears to stand between Middle-earth and salvation.

The manipulation succeeds because Celebrimbor can defend the decision to himself. He sees a problem, believes he has discovered the solution, and experiences opposition as evidence that others lack his vision.

That process gives Sauron’s power more dramatic weight than a simple magical command. Celebrimbor remains responsible for the choice even as Sauron engineers the circumstances around it.

The tragedy grows from the space where manipulation and personal responsibility overlap.

Does Sauron Create Problems So He Can Sell The Solution?

The episode raises the possibility that Sauron’s strategy extends beyond exploiting problems that already exist.

Khazad-dûm needs a way to restore light and stability. The Elves have already feared their own fading. Celebrimbor believes the Rings can answer these crises.

Sauron benefits from every emergency. That creates the question of how many of these conditions he caused, accelerated, or merely recognized.

His method resembles creating a disease and then presenting himself as the only person capable of producing the cure. Even when Sauron did not create the original wound, he understands how to deepen it until his solution becomes irresistible.

The Rings can then enter Middle-earth as gifts. Their future bearers will accept them because the power solves something real before the corruption becomes visible.

Why Celebrimbor Defies Gil-galad

Celebrimbor’s decision to ignore Gil-galad grows from more than simple arrogance.

He believes the work in Eregion can preserve civilizations. The Three have already given the Elves hope, and the crisis in Khazad-dûm gives him another opportunity to prove that the forge can protect Middle-earth.

Gil-galad’s authority also limits the achievement Celebrimbor believes he was born to complete. Obedience would mean accepting that his greatest work may already be finished and that another ruler controls what he is permitted to create next.

Annatar offers a more flattering interpretation. Celebrimbor can become the visionary who acts when established leaders are too frightened to proceed.

Defiance therefore feels moral, creative, and personal. Celebrimbor can tell himself that he is protecting the Dwarves while also defending his legacy.

Sauron’s influence works because both explanations are true enough to conceal the danger.

Durin IV Recognizes Something Is Wrong With Annatar

Durin IV’s suspicion gives him an immediate advantage over Celebrimbor.

Annatar attempts to establish trust by invoking Elrond and suggesting that the Elf has spoken warmly about Durin. Durin knows the state of that relationship and recognizes that the presentation does not feel right.

His reaction shows how existing relationships can protect someone from manipulation. Durin understands Elrond well enough to question a message supposedly coming from him.

Celebrimbor is more vulnerable because Annatar is speaking directly to the part of his identity that wants affirmation. Durin hears an inconsistency. Celebrimbor hears permission.

Disa shares Durin’s caution, although the danger facing Khazad-dûm keeps the offer alive. The Dwarves may distrust the messenger and still decide that the gift is worth the risk.

Durin IV And Durin III Begin Repairing Their Relationship

The reunion between Durin IV and his father gives the Dwarven storyline an emotional foundation before the Rings enter their kingdom.

Their conflict has involved succession, authority, Elrond, and Durin IV’s refusal to obey the king. Both men have allowed pride to harden the separation between them.

The apology does not become a long emotional resolution. Father and son acknowledge the damage and move quickly toward the business facing Khazad-dûm.

That abrupt transition feels recognizable to Blake because some family relationships handle reconciliation through action rather than extended conversation. The apology opens the door. Discussing the kingdom becomes the way they walk through it.

The restored relationship also increases the future cost of the Ring. Durin IV has only just regained access to his father when a new source of power is about to change the king.

Isildur Survives Because Berek Refuses To Leave Him

Berek becomes the hero of Isildur’s return.

The horse senses that Isildur is alive even though the Númenóreans have accepted his death. Berek travels back into the ruined Southlands, finds him inside the spider nest, and fights through the creatures to help him escape.

The sequence establishes loyalty before Isildur can prove that he deserves it. Berek does not rescue a triumphant future king. He rescues a frightened, injured young man who believes he has disappointed his father and contributed to his mother’s death.

That loyalty gives Isildur another life he may eventually feel obligated to honor.

His story is increasingly built around people and creatures making sacrifices for him. Each sacrifice adds to the pressure he feels to justify his survival.

Does The Episode Begin Explaining Why Isildur Keeps The One Ring?

Mary and Blake connect Isildur’s conversation with Estrid to the choice he will eventually make at Mount Doom.

Isildur feels responsible for his mother’s death because she died while saving him. Estrid tells him that his life was precious to her and that her sacrifice was a gift rather than a debt he can repay through guilt.

The use of the word “precious” carries obvious significance within the larger story of the One Ring. The episode may be planting an emotional association between something precious and the sacrifices that allowed Isildur to survive.

By the time Isildur defeats Sauron, he may have lost his mother, friends, and other members of his family. Taking the Ring could feel like proof that those sacrifices led to something meaningful.

Destroying it may then feel emotionally similar to throwing away the achievement that justified his survival.

This remains a theory rather than an explanation the series has confirmed. The episode provides enough emotional material for the future refusal to grow from more than simple greed.

Could The Series Retell Isildur’s Choice From His Perspective?

The familiar version of Isildur’s refusal is largely remembered through Elrond’s perspective. Isildur defeats Sauron, takes the Ring, reaches the fire, and refuses to destroy it.

From Elrond’s point of view, the choice represents weakness and the corrupting power of the Ring.

The Rings Of Power has the opportunity to dramatize the same event from inside Isildur’s experience. His decision could still be disastrous while carrying grief, survivor’s guilt, family history, and a belief that the Ring represents the purpose behind everything he lost.

Retelling the moment through Isildur would not erase the corruption. It would allow the audience to understand the emotional path that made corruption possible.

That is the kind of prequel storytelling capable of adding meaning to an outcome viewers already know.

Can Isildur Trust Estrid?

Estrid gives Isildur companionship and helps him survive, but the mark connected to Adar makes her intentions difficult to read.

She has tried to burn the symbol from her body, suggesting shame, rejection, or an attempt to hide her history. Her missing betrothed also complicates the growing attraction between her and Isildur.

Isildur is drawn toward saving her because he wants to believe that people can outgrow the worst thing associated with them. That belief may also reflect how he sees himself.

He feels defined by his failures and his mother’s death. Accepting Estrid’s possibility of redemption would support the hope that he can also become something greater than his past.

The danger is that Isildur may be projecting the person he wants her to be over the evidence directly in front of him.

Arondir’s Return Gives The Episode Its Best Entrance

Arondir returns through a sharply constructed action sequence that immediately restores his physical confidence and presence.

His movement through the carriage, the timing of the attack, and the force of the sound design make the entrance feel larger than the amount of screen time devoted to it.

The scene also gives the audience something emotionally familiar after Bronwyn’s off-screen death changed the planned shape of the storyline.

Arondir remains connected to Theo and the surviving people of the Southlands. His role now depends upon what he chooses to protect after losing the person who originally tied him to the community.

Mary remains fully invested in Arondir. Blake sees the character’s return as one of the episode’s strongest production and action moments.

Why Theo’s Story Is Struggling

Theo’s storyline has lost part of its foundation following Bronwyn’s death.

His relationship with his mother gave emotional context to his anger, secrecy, connection to the sword hilt, and distrust of Arondir. Removing Bronwyn leaves the character grieving while the series searches for a new direction.

Mary sees possibility in that uncertainty. Theo has a mysterious family history, a connection to the dark weapon from Season 1, and enough anger to become either a significant hero or a dangerous figure.

Blake sees a character whose future importance remains theoretical. Theo is taken at the end of the episode, but the immediate emotional investment in his disappearance is limited.

The abduction creates a new plot. The next episodes need to clarify what Theo wants and how his decisions will alter the larger story.

Why The Orc Family Matters

The image of an Orc with a partner and child complicates the relationship between Adar and his followers.

Adar calls the Orcs his children and presents himself as the father who freed them from Sauron. The family shows that some of those children now have lives and responsibilities of their own.

They may want land, safety, and the ability to raise families without serving another Dark Lord. Adar’s war against Sauron could protect that future, but it also asks the Orcs to risk everything they are trying to preserve.

The tension creates a credible path for conflict within the army. If the Orcs begin to believe that Adar values vengeance more than their survival, Sauron may find an opportunity to reclaim them.

Giving the Orcs relationships does not remove their capacity for violence. It gives their eventual choices a motive beyond the command of whoever currently leads them.

Damrod Gives Adar’s Army A Heavy-Metal Weapon

Damrod’s introduction adds scale, danger, and a completely different musical identity to Adar’s forces.

The hill-troll moves through the environment without concern for anyone in his path. His size immediately suggests the kind of destructive role he could play in a siege.

Bear McCreary supports the entrance with an aggressive metal track that sounds unlike the music associated with the Elves, Dwarves, Númenor, or Sauron.

The choice gives Damrod a personality before the character has done much beyond arrive. The music tells the audience that this creature will bring chaos rather than strategy.

Adar is assembling an army capable of reaching Eregion. Damrod is the clearest indication that the coming attack will involve overwhelming physical destruction.

What Happens At Míriel’s Coronation?

Míriel enters the coronation wearing white in honor of her father and the stability she hopes to preserve.

Pharazôn wears red, visually aligning himself with change, ambition, and a new political future. The clothing communicates the divide before either character openly claims the throne.

Eärien then produces the palantír and uses it to damage Míriel’s legitimacy. The crowd treats the Elven object as evidence that the Queen Regent has betrayed Númenor’s traditions and placed the kingdom under foreign influence.

A Great Eagle arrives during the chaos. Eagles rarely appear at coronations, making its presence a powerful omen.

The Eagle looks toward Míriel, but Pharazôn approaches it. The crowd begins chanting his name, and he accepts the interpretation without correcting them.

The sceptre may formally belong to Míriel. The Eagle gives Pharazôn the image he needs to take power.

Did The Eagle Choose Pharazôn?

The episode gives little reason to believe the Eagle arrived for Pharazôn.

The coronation belongs to Míriel, and the possibility of an Eagle appearing was discussed in relation to her ceremony. The Eagle also appears agitated when Pharazôn moves into its space.

Pharazôn’s political instinct matters more than the Eagle’s actual intention. He recognizes that the people are prepared to treat the moment as a sign and places himself where the sign can be associated with him.

He never has to control the Eagle. He controls the public interpretation.

The scene parallels Sauron’s style of manipulation in a smaller and more political form. Pharazôn allows other people to draw the useful conclusion and then behaves as though their conclusion carries divine authority.

Why Númenor Still Feels Less Compelling

The Númenor storyline contains major themes involving mortality, faith, political ambition, and resentment toward the Elves.

The challenge is that many of its changes have occurred through public declarations, sudden reversals, ceremonies, and political devices rather than relationships with the emotional depth found elsewhere in the series.

The population turns quickly. The palantír shifts the ceremony. The Eagle shifts it again. Pharazôn benefits because the scene requires only a public image and a crowd ready to interpret it.

The sequence communicates what happened. The personal cost surrounding Míriel’s loss of authority remains less developed.

Durin’s conflict with his father, Celebrimbor’s dependency on Annatar, and Isildur’s guilt all give their political or mythological choices an intimate source. Númenor needs similarly strong relationships to turn its eventual fall into tragedy.

Could Pharazôn Receive One Of The Nine Rings?

Mary and Blake theorize that Pharazôn could become a candidate for one of the Nine Rings intended for Men.

He desires power, fears mortality, resents the immortality of the Elves, and believes Númenor deserves greater dominion over Middle-earth. A Ring promising strength, longevity, or authority would speak directly to each of those desires.

Giving Pharazôn a Ring could also connect the forging storyline to the political fall of Númenor. Sauron would gain access to the kingdom through a ruler who believes he is accepting a tool rather than surrendering control.

The episode does not confirm that Pharazôn will become a Ring-bearer. His ambition makes the theory dramatically plausible within the story the series is constructing.

Our Final Verdict On “The Eagle And The Sceptre”

Mary’s 4.8 reflects how much she enjoys the episode’s character movement, the return of Arondir, Berek’s rescue, the Dwarves, the Orc family, Damrod, and the growing tragedy surrounding Isildur.

Blake’s 4.6 reflects a strong response to Annatar and Celebrimbor, Arondir’s entrance, and the effective horror of the spider sequence. His larger reservation comes from Númenor, where the political movement still feels less emotionally grounded than the relationships driving Eregion and Khazad-dûm.

“The Eagle And The Sceptre” succeeds most clearly whenever a major event grows from something personal. Celebrimbor defies Gil-galad because he wants his work to matter. Durin approaches his father because their kingdom needs help. Isildur clings to survival because other people have sacrificed themselves for him. The Orcs hesitate because some of them have families to protect.

Sauron understands that power enters through those desires. He rarely needs to force anyone forward. He helps them see the choice they already want to make and waits for them to call it their own.

The episode’s strongest material comes from two forms of manipulation. Elrond refuses to allow Galadriel to describe herself as an instrument Sauron simply played. Sauron found the deepest desire inside her and became the lost king who appeared capable of carrying her to victory. Galadriel made choices around that desire, and Middle-earth is now living with the consequences.

Celebrimbor falls into the same trap from another direction. Halbrand studies the great smith, discovers his need for recognition and purpose, and allows Celebrimbor to define the beautiful figure who emerges from the fire. Sauron never has to announce himself as Annatar. Celebrimbor provides the name, the meaning, and the invitation.

The hour surrounds those conversations with horror imagery: dead messengers dragged through the forest, Galadriel’s vision of Celebrimbor entwined and impaled by roots, a blood ritual involving moths, and Annatar’s almost religious emergence from the flames. The Rings may offer preservation, but the path toward them is beginning to feel like a nightmare.

The Rings Of Power Season 2 Episode 2 Recap: What Happens In “Where The Stars Are Strange”?

“Where The Stars Are Strange” begins by revisiting the eruption of Mount Doom through a map of Middle-earth. The darkness spreading from Mordor is followed by an earthquake inside Khazad-dûm, where the mountain’s structures collapse and the shafts that carry sunlight into the kingdom are destroyed.

The loss of light threatens the Dwarves’ crops and food supply. Durin IV has been reduced to working among the miners while remaining estranged from his father. King Durin III gathers his advisers and stone-singers to find a solution, but their attempts to communicate with the mountain fail.

Disa confronts the king about the crisis and the damage inside his family. She refuses to serve as a messenger between father and son, telling Durin III to speak with Durin IV himself. She later challenges her husband as well, recognizing that pride on both sides is preventing them from repairing the relationship Khazad-dûm may need.

In Lindon, Galadriel plants seeds at the memorial for her brother and experiences a violent vision through Nenya. The seeds become dark roots that wrap around Celebrimbor, pull him into the shape of a living grave, and impale him as he speaks of seven Rings for the Dwarves and nine for mortal Men.

Galadriel tells Gil-galad that the Ring is showing her possible events. Gil-galad admits that his own Ring has also given him visions, though he reveals very little about what he has seen.

Elrond continues opposing the use of the Three. He seeks guidance from Círdan, who has chosen to keep the Rings rather than destroy them. Círdan argues that the moral character of an artist does not automatically erase the value of the work and reminds Elrond that the Rings are currently held by people he loves and trusts.

Círdan demonstrates the Ring’s power near a pool of fish. The water and creatures react to its presence, suggesting that the Ring can influence life around it in ways the Elves still do not fully understand.

Gil-galad decides that Galadriel must travel to Eregion, but he places Elrond in command of the company. Elrond has defied the High King and rejected the Rings, yet Gil-galad believes his caution may be necessary when Galadriel remains vulnerable to Sauron’s deception.

Galadriel asks Elrond to help her navigate Sauron’s plan. Elrond tells her that the labyrinth belongs to Sauron and that anyone remaining inside it has already lost. He also rejects her claim that Sauron played her like a harp to a melody she did not choose.

Sauron found the melody inside her. Galadriel wanted the lost king, the army, and the victory he appeared capable of giving her. She chose to trust the person who reflected those desires back to her.

Messengers carrying Gil-galad’s warning to Celebrimbor are attacked before reaching Eregion. Their bodies are dragged through the forest, and the container bearing the High King’s mark falls broken to the ground.

Halbrand waits outside Eregion until Celebrimbor finally agrees to see him. Celebrimbor knows that Galadriel warned him against treating with Halbrand, but the man’s wounds, persistence, and carefully constructed story gain his attention.

Halbrand tells Celebrimbor that he is not the person the smith believes him to be. Celebrimbor interprets the statement through his own ambition and assumes that the stranger must be a divine messenger from Valinor.

Sauron enters the fire and emerges in a beautiful Elven form. Celebrimbor calls him Annatar, the Lord of Gifts. Sauron accepts the identity Celebrimbor has created for him and offers the knowledge needed to complete their work.

In Rhûn, the Stranger, Nori, and Poppy continue traveling beneath unfamiliar stars. The Stranger searches for a staff and attempts to control his power when masked riders pursue them.

He creates a violent tornado that drives away the attackers but also throws Nori and Poppy into the distance. His magic protects his friends while once again placing them in danger.

The episode also introduces the Dark Wizard’s domain. One of the mystical figures from Season 1 is recreated through moths and a blood ritual, while a masked man offers to capture the Stranger by using his halfling companions as bait.

The Rings Of Power Season 2 Episode 2 Review

“Where The Stars Are Strange” improves upon one of Season 1’s central weaknesses by giving Galadriel a conflict that cannot be solved through determination or physical ability.

She helped Sauron return to power. She brought Halbrand to Eregion, connected him with Celebrimbor, concealed his identity after discovering the truth, and now wears a Ring created through knowledge he helped provide.

The consequences affect her relationships with Gil-galad and Elrond. They also affect the way she understands herself. Galadriel wants to frame Sauron’s manipulation as an invasion of her will. Elrond insists that he manipulated choices she genuinely wanted to make.

That confrontation gives the character meaningful resistance. Galadriel cannot defeat the argument with a sword, outrun it, or dismiss it as another ruler failing to understand the threat. Elrond knows her, loves her, and sees the part of her identity Sauron exploited.

The Annatar transformation gives the episode its other major success. The scene combines manipulation, performance, horror, and religious imagery. Charlie Vickers moves from wounded Halbrand to a luminous emissary without changing the emotional strategy underneath the disguise.

Sauron identifies the person Celebrimbor wishes were standing before him and becomes that person.

The episode is less effective when it returns to mysteries that remain disconnected from the season’s central drama. The Dark Wizard, masked riders, moth ritual, and Stranger storyline contain striking images. Their identities and objectives remain deliberately vague, creating more questions than immediate character pressure.

Khazad-dûm works because the disaster affects a family and marriage the audience already cares about. Eregion works because Celebrimbor and Sauron are developing a relationship. The Rhûn material still depends heavily upon wondering who everyone will eventually become.

Elrond Forces Galadriel To Accept Her Responsibility

Galadriel tells Elrond that Sauron used her and played her like a harp to a melody she did not choose.

Elrond rejects the distinction. Sauron looked inside Galadriel and found the song already present within her. He became the lost king who could lead an army, restore the Southlands, and transform her endless pursuit into victory.

Galadriel wanted those things before meeting Halbrand. Sauron gave those desires a face and allowed her to believe that helping him would fulfill the purpose that had consumed her life.

Elrond’s response does not absolve Sauron. It defines why his manipulation was effective. He did not create Galadriel’s obsession, pride, grief, or inability to stop fighting. He arranged himself around those qualities.

The scene gives Galadriel a responsibility that is more difficult to carry than ordinary guilt. She must confront the possibility that Sauron understood her because part of what drives him also exists within her.

Why Elrond Does Not Trust Galadriel With Nenya

Elrond’s distrust extends beyond the Ring itself.

Galadriel concealed Halbrand’s identity after learning that he was Sauron. She now says Nenya is giving her visions that should determine the Elves’ next move. Elrond has reason to question whether the Ring is providing information, amplifying her existing desire, or guiding her toward another destination Sauron wants her to reach.

He also sees how quickly Gil-galad and Círdan have accepted the Three because the Rings appear capable of preserving the Elves. The result may be beneficial, but the speed of their trust alarms him.

Elrond does not deny that the Rings possess power. He fears that power will make their bearers less willing to question where it came from and what dependence upon it may eventually cost.

Placing Elrond in command forces Galadriel to travel under the authority of the one person most prepared to challenge her certainty.

Why Gil-galad Puts Elrond In Charge

Gil-galad’s leadership remains inconsistent. Galadriel repeatedly disobeyed his orders throughout Season 1, and Elrond defied him by taking the Three and attempting to have them destroyed.

The High King still restores Galadriel to the mission and promotes Elrond into command.

Mary finds the pattern frustrating because Gil-galad appears to reward the people who most directly reject his authority. His decisions make it difficult to understand what standards guide the Elven hierarchy.

The choice also contains strategic logic. Galadriel has the experience, knowledge of Sauron, and visions needed for the journey. Elrond provides the skepticism that Gil-galad believes she lacks.

The company therefore contains both necessary perspectives. Galadriel recognizes the urgency. Elrond questions the path being offered.

Gil-galad’s failure is less about selecting the wrong people and more about the series leaving the political process behind those decisions underdeveloped.

Galadriel’s Vision Predicts Celebrimbor’s Tragedy

Galadriel’s vision transforms an act of remembrance into an image of corruption.

She plants seeds beside the memorial for her brother. The growth becomes twisted roots that trap Celebrimbor, turn him into part of the tree, and pierce his body as he speaks about the Seven and the Nine.

The image links Galadriel, Celebrimbor, and the Rings before Celebrimbor has agreed to make them. The seeds she plants suggest that the current disaster grows from choices already made.

Galadriel brought Halbrand into Celebrimbor’s forge. She allowed Sauron to gain access to the greatest smith in Middle-earth. The vision turns that connection into a literal root system leading toward Celebrimbor’s death.

The red light surrounding the scene echoes the eruption of Mount Doom and gives the vision the feeling of another world being consumed by the consequences of Sauron’s return.

Why “Where The Stars Are Strange” Uses Horror

The episode repeatedly uses horror to show that familiar parts of Middle-earth are becoming unsafe.

The Elven messengers disappear from an ordinary road and are dragged away by something the audience cannot see. Celebrimbor becomes a living corpse inside Galadriel’s vision. Khazad-dûm loses its light and hears danger beneath the mountain. The acolyte is reconstructed through blood, moths, and magic.

Annatar’s arrival also uses horror beneath its beauty. Halbrand enters the fire, the room responds violently, and a glowing figure emerges through flame and smoke. The transformation resembles a divine revelation while carrying the physical unease of a supernatural invasion.

Sauron understands that Celebrimbor expects beauty from a messenger of the Valar. The horror belongs to the audience, who knows the holy image is a disguise created by the enemy standing inside the forge.

Sauron Becomes Exactly What Celebrimbor Needs

Halbrand initially approaches Celebrimbor through shared status. He presents both of them as creators whose gifts have been ignored or controlled by more powerful rulers.

Celebrimbor resists because Galadriel has warned him against Halbrand. Sauron then changes the strategy. He reveals his wounds, waits outside the city, accepts humiliation, and allows Celebrimbor to feel responsible for the suffering of someone who may possess important knowledge.

Once admitted, Halbrand tells Celebrimbor that he is not who the smith believes him to be.

Celebrimbor supplies the next answer. He imagines a messenger from Valinor sent to guide his work. Sauron sees the belief forming and steps into it.

The transformation works because Annatar is not a random disguise. He is the physical expression of Celebrimbor’s ambition. A divine Lord of Gifts has chosen this forge, this smith, and this moment to create something capable of saving Middle-earth.

Sauron becomes proof that Celebrimbor is as important as he has always hoped.

Does Sauron Lie About Being Annatar?

Sauron avoids directly naming himself Annatar.

He says that he is there to offer knowledge and help with the work ahead. Celebrimbor decides that the figure must be Annatar, the Lord of Gifts. Sauron accepts the identity without correcting him.

The distinction reflects his larger method. Sauron often provides carefully selected truths and allows the other person to construct the deception around them.

Celebrimbor is more invested in the identity because he discovered it himself. Annatar is not simply a story Halbrand tells him. Annatar is the answer Celebrimbor believes his own wisdom revealed.

That gives Sauron another layer of protection. Questioning Annatar would require Celebrimbor to question his own judgment, his sense of importance, and the divine meaning he has assigned to the encounter.

Why Celebrimbor Lets Halbrand Into Eregion

Celebrimbor knows that Galadriel told him not to treat with Halbrand. He still allows the man inside because Sauron applies pressure to several parts of his identity at once.

Halbrand appears wounded and abandoned, creating an appeal to Celebrimbor’s compassion. He also possesses knowledge connected to the Rings, appealing to Celebrimbor’s curiosity and ambition.

Most importantly, Halbrand understands what it means to feel that a creator’s work is constrained by rulers who cannot fully appreciate it. He gives Celebrimbor the companionship of someone who appears to understand the burden of extraordinary ability.

Celebrimbor opens the gate because refusing Halbrand now feels cruel, shortsighted, and potentially harmful to the future of Middle-earth.

Sauron turns obedience to Galadriel’s warning into the choice Celebrimbor can least comfortably defend to himself.

Will Galadriel Recognize Annatar?

Annatar retains Sauron’s face while changing his hair, voice, clothing, posture, and presentation.

Celebrimbor sees Halbrand enter the fire and Annatar emerge. He interprets the transformation as revelation rather than disguise because he does not know that Halbrand is Sauron.

Galadriel knows the truth. Her eventual arrival in Eregion therefore creates an immediate problem for Sauron.

The episode does not explain whether Annatar can alter how Galadriel perceives him, whether he will avoid her, or whether Celebrimbor will trust his new divine adviser over the Elf who previously concealed Sauron’s identity.

Mary’s reaction is that Galadriel may have complicated feelings about the transformation. Annatar’s glow-up is impressive, even when the man beneath it remains the same Dark Lord who proposed ruling Middle-earth beside her.

Khazad-dûm Goes Dark

The destruction of Khazad-dûm’s light system creates one of the episode’s most effective images.

The kingdom was introduced as a place filled with life, movement, greenery, engineering, and sunlight carried deep inside the mountain. The earthquake removes the feature that made the underground city feel alive.

The darkness is practical as well as symbolic. Without sunlight, the crops cannot grow and the Dwarves cannot sustain their population.

The disaster creates the problem that will eventually make the Rings attractive. The Dwarves need a solution beyond their existing knowledge, and Sauron is preparing gifts designed to answer exactly that kind of need.

The Seven will not enter Khazad-dûm as obvious instruments of corruption. They will arrive as possible salvation.

Did Mount Doom Cause The Earthquake In Khazad-dûm?

The episode visually connects the eruption of Mount Doom with the earthquake inside Khazad-dûm, though it does not fully define the cause.

The disruption may be a physical aftershock spreading across Middle-earth. It may also represent Sauron’s growing influence moving outward from Mordor. The episode shows darkness traveling across the map before the mountain begins to shake.

A Dwarven adviser also suggests that something deeper beneath Khazad-dûm contributed to the disturbance. The warning points toward the Balrog revealed at the end of Season 1.

The disaster may therefore result from several forces colliding: the eruption, the awakening danger beneath the mountain, and the larger darkness spreading across the world.

Disa Is The Only Person Challenging Both Durins

Disa refuses to participate in the pride separating Durin IV and Durin III.

The king asks her about his son. Disa tells him to ask Durin himself. She also challenges Durin IV when his anger and wounded pride prevent him from repairing the relationship.

Her position works because she cares about the family and the kingdom. She does not automatically support her husband in private when she believes he is contributing to the problem.

The marriage feels convincing because Disa and Durin can challenge one another without making the relationship itself feel unstable. Their disagreement grows from shared responsibility rather than a lack of affection.

That emotional foundation makes the approaching corruption more dangerous. The Ring will enter a family the audience already understands and threaten relationships that currently feel strong.

Why The Stone-singers Cannot Heal The Mountain

The stone-singers attempt to locate the mountain’s paths through their voices, but the ritual grows increasingly desperate and creates further instability.

The failure suggests that the ordinary relationship between the Dwarves and the mountain has been disrupted. Disa and the other singers can no longer hear or guide the stone in the way they expect.

Their angry, forceful singing reflects the panic spreading through Khazad-dûm. They need the mountain to respond because the kingdom’s survival depends upon it.

The silence also prepares the Dwarves to accept a different source of perception. A Ring that allows Durin III to see through the mountain will appear capable of restoring the connection their own traditions have lost.

Why Círdan Keeps The Three Rings

Círdan decides that the Three should be used because he believes the value of the work can exist apart from the moral character of the person who influenced its creation.

He reminds Elrond that the Rings are held by Gil-galad, Galadriel, and himself—people Elrond trusts. Círdan believes the character of the bearer can direct the power toward preservation.

Elrond fears that this argument underestimates the object itself. The Rings may influence the people wearing them, making trust in the bearer less reassuring over time.

The scene establishes the debate that will shape the Elves’ relationship with the Three. Their power is real, their purpose appears beneficial, and the immediate results support Círdan’s position.

The uncertainty lies in what the Rings ask from their bearers once those bearers begin relying upon them.

What Does The Fish Scene Reveal About The Rings?

Círdan’s Ring affects the water and fish around him. One fish leaps from the pool and briefly becomes a fish out of water before being returned.

The image shows that the Ring can excite, guide, or control life in its environment. The effect appears beautiful and unnatural at the same time.

Mary sees the fish as evidence that the Ring can push a living creature toward behavior that threatens its own survival. Blake sees the scene as another indication that the Rings possess power beyond what their bearers currently understand.

The moment supports both sides of the argument. The Ring creates wonder. It also interferes with the natural will of the creature responding to it.

Who Kills The Elven Messengers?

The episode does not identify the force that attacks the Elven messengers traveling to Eregion.

The editing cuts from their bodies being dragged away to Halbrand, encouraging the audience to connect the attack with Sauron. He may have caused it directly, influenced something in the forest, or simply benefited from a threat already present along the road.

Adar’s Orcs are another possibility, although their immediate movements appear focused elsewhere.

The uncertainty becomes one of Blake’s frustrations with the episode. Season 1 frequently used mysteries to delay information rather than deepen character, and this attack risks repeating that habit.

The important consequence is clear even while the attacker remains unknown: Celebrimbor never receives Gil-galad’s warning, leaving Sauron free to control the information reaching Eregion.

The Stranger’s Magic Protects And Endangers His Friends

The Stranger believes a staff may help him control his abilities. When the masked riders attack, he uses a branch to direct his power and creates a massive tornado.

The magic drives away the pursuers. It also throws Nori and Poppy into the distance and separates him from the people he intended to save.

The outcome continues the central problem established in Season 1. The Stranger wants to be good, but intention does not give him control. His power remains capable of causing harm whenever fear or urgency overwhelms him.

The scene has the visual language of a fantasy set piece and the comic association of characters being swept toward Oz. Its story function is primarily separation, moving Nori and Poppy into another part of Rhûn while leaving the Stranger alone.

Blake finds that mechanics visible. Mary accepts the accident as part of a wizard still learning how to use abilities he does not understand.

Who Is The Dark Wizard In Rhûn?

The Dark Wizard rules from a desert stronghold and commands the mystical acolytes and masked riders searching for the Stranger.

His staff, environment, servants, and ritual imagery establish a magical power distinct from the Stranger. The episode still withholds his name, history, and specific relationship to Sauron.

One of the acolytes from Season 1 is recreated through moths and blood, demonstrating that the Dark Wizard possesses significant power over form and life. A masked man then offers to capture the Stranger by targeting Nori.

The mystery creates anticipation while leaving the character emotionally distant. The audience understands that he is dangerous because other characters fear him and because the imagery around him is sinister.

The story still needs to show what he wants from the Stranger and why that conflict matters beyond revealing another familiar name.

Is The Stranger Still Gandalf?

The Stranger’s kindness, connection to halflings, search for a staff, and role as a wandering wizard continue pointing toward Gandalf.

The episode briefly plays with darker associations. Dialogue about dangerous powers is followed by images of the Stranger, and his uncontrolled magic repeatedly harms the people near him.

Those moments create uncertainty around his path rather than necessarily identifying him as evil. Gandalf’s eventual wisdom would carry more meaning if the character first had to learn how easily power can become destructive.

Mary remains open to other possibilities. Blake believes the Gandalf answer has become clear enough that continuing to treat the identity as the central question risks becoming mystery for its own sake.

Is The Rings Of Power Adaptation Or Fan Fiction?

The podcast closes with a larger question about how the series relates to Tolkien’s work.

The Rings Of Power adapts characters, events, themes, names, and historical material associated with Tolkien’s Second Age. The series also invents conversations, relationships, motivations, timelines, and connective stories needed to turn that material into ongoing television.

Mary sees adaptation and fan fiction as closely related creative processes. Both begin when someone loves an existing world and imagines stories that can live inside it. Official permission, production, and payment change the legal and commercial category, while the imaginative impulse may remain similar.

Blake compares the situation to later Star Wars stories created after George Lucas. The work comes from another creative team operating inside a world someone else established.

The useful question is whether the new material is well written, directed, acted, and emotionally coherent. Fidelity matters, but fidelity alone cannot make a television story work.

Season 2 is becoming more successful because it is grounding the invented connective material in character conflict. Elrond’s confrontation with Galadriel and Annatar’s manipulation of Celebrimbor give familiar mythology a dramatic argument.

Our Final Verdict On “Where The Stars Are Strange”

Mary’s 4.8 reflects how much she responds to Khazad-dûm, Disa, Durin, Elrond’s new authority, Galadriel’s visions, and the continued expansion of Middle-earth. Her frustration centers on Gil-galad’s inconsistent leadership and the way he rewards people who repeatedly defy him.

Blake’s 4.7 reflects a strong response to the Annatar transformation, Elrond’s confrontation with Galadriel, the horror imagery, and the dead messengers. His reservations involve the continued mystery-box structure, the disconnected Rhûn storyline, and a few production choices that feel larger than the scenes require.

“Where The Stars Are Strange” succeeds because Sauron’s power finally extends beyond a hidden identity. He understands what people need to believe about themselves.

Galadriel needed to believe she had found the king who could justify her war. Celebrimbor needs to believe the gods have recognized his greatness. Sauron becomes the answer to both desires and waits for each person to call the answer his or her own.
