The Rings Of Power Season 1 has 8 episodes. The first two episodes, “A Shadow Of The Past” and “Adrift,” premiered together on September 2, 2022. The remaining episodes were released weekly through the Season 1 finale, “Alloyed,” on October 14, 2022.
The Season 1 Argument
Season 1 is about people mistaking the absence of visible danger for peace. Evil returns not because nobody was watching, but because fear, ambition, grief and certainty create exactly the openings Sauron needs.
The Rings Of Power Season 1 Recap: What Happened?
Season 1 begins with Galadriel refusing to believe the war against evil is truly over. Morgoth has been defeated, but Galadriel has spent centuries hunting Sauron after the death of her brother Finrod. Her search takes her company into the frozen north, where they discover evidence that Sauron survived.
Galadriel’s soldiers eventually refuse to continue. She returns to Lindon, where Gil-galad rewards her service with passage to Valinor.
But Galadriel cannot accept peace while she believes Sauron is still somewhere in Middle-earth.
At the last moment, she jumps from the ship.
That decision puts her in the sea, where she meets a group of human survivors and a mysterious man named Halbrand. After a storm destroys their raft, Galadriel and Halbrand are rescued by Elendil and taken to Númenor.
Galadriel becomes convinced that Halbrand is the lost king of the Southlands after recognizing the symbol on the pouch he carries. Halbrand repeatedly resists the identity she gives him, but Galadriel sees restoring the Southlands’ king as a way to unite its people against the evil she believes is returning.
The relationship between Galadriel and Halbrand becomes the central trap of the season.
Galadriel believes she has found another person defined by loss. Halbrand listens to her, studies her certainty and allows her to keep pushing him toward the places he needs to go.
While Galadriel is in Númenor, another threat is emerging in the Southlands. Arondir discovers signs that Orcs have returned and is captured by forces led by Adar, a corrupted Elf who considers the Orcs his children.
Adar wants something very specific: a homeland where the Orcs can live without hiding from sunlight or serving another master.
Bronwyn and Theo become part of the resistance against Adar. Theo also discovers a mysterious black sword hilt marked with Sauron’s symbol. The weapon reforms when fed blood and eventually becomes the key to transforming the entire region.
Galadriel convinces Númenor to send an expedition to Middle-earth. Elendil, Isildur and Míriel travel with the force, while Halbrand returns as the man Galadriel believes can reclaim the Southlands.
The Númenóreans arrive in time to help defeat Adar’s forces.
For a moment, it appears Galadriel was right.
Halbrand is proclaimed king. Adar is captured. The Southlands have survived.
Then the real plan succeeds.
Waldreg still possesses the true sword hilt. He inserts it into a mechanism at Ostirith, releasing a dam. Water races through tunnels the Orcs have dug beneath the Southlands and reaches the volcanic chamber under Orodruin.
Mount Doom erupts.
The Southlands are covered in fire and ash and become the land we know as Mordor.
Elsewhere, Elrond has been sent to help Celebrimbor construct a massive forge in Eregion. The project brings Elrond back to his old friend Prince Durin IV in Khazad-dûm.
The reunion is not easy. Elrond has allowed twenty years to pass without visiting. To an immortal Elf, that can feel like a short absence. To Durin, those twenty years included marriage, children and a huge portion of his life.
Their friendship gradually recovers, and Elrond discovers that the Dwarves have found a remarkable new metal beneath the mountain:
Mithril.
Gil-galad and Celebrimbor believe the light of the Elves is fading and that mithril may contain the power necessary to preserve them in Middle-earth.
Durin eventually wants to help Elrond, but King Durin III refuses to risk the kingdom by mining deeper. The final images beneath Khazad-dûm reveal that his fear is not unfounded.
A Balrog is waiting below.
At the same time, Nori Brandyfoot discovers a powerful Stranger who fell from the sky in a meteor. She hides him from the Harfoots and tries to help him understand both his abilities and his purpose.
Three mysterious figures eventually find the Stranger and believe he is Sauron. Their mistake creates another identity reveal in the finale.
The Stranger is not Sauron.
He is an Istar — a Wizard.
Season 1 does not formally name him Gandalf, but the clues point strongly in that direction. Nori ultimately leaves the Harfoots to travel east with him toward Rhûn.
The biggest reveal, however, happens in Eregion.
Halbrand is injured after the eruption of Mount Doom, and Galadriel brings him to the Elves for healing. There he becomes interested in Celebrimbor’s work with mithril and suggests combining the small amount they possess with another metal.
Galadriel begins to suspect something is wrong.
She researches the royal line of the Southlands and learns that it ended roughly a thousand years earlier.
There is no lost king.
She confronts Halbrand.
Halbrand is Sauron.

Galadriel meets Halbrand at sea. Nori tries to communicate with the Stranger, Elrond returns to Khazad-dûm, and Bronwyn and Theo discover that the danger in the Southlands is already inside their home.

Is Halbrand Sauron?
Yes. Halbrand is Sauron. Galadriel discovers the truth during the Season 1 finale after researching the royal line of the Southlands and learning that it died out roughly one thousand years earlier.
Halbrand never actually tells Galadriel that he is the rightful king. Galadriel sees his pouch, identifies the symbol and constructs that identity around him because it fits the story she already believes.
Sauron allows her to do it.
That is what makes the reveal more interesting than a simple secret identity. Galadriel spends the season believing she is dragging a reluctant king toward his destiny while unknowingly placing Sauron exactly where he needs to be.
She brings him to Númenor.
She brings him back to Middle-earth.

The reveal works because Sauron does not defeat Galadriel’s determination. He uses it.
How Did The Southlands Become Mordor?
Adar’s plan depends on the black sword hilt Theo discovered in the Southlands. The hilt is not simply a weapon. It functions as a key to an ancient mechanism at Ostirith.
After Adar’s forces appear to be defeated, the Númenóreans recover what they believe is the hilt.
It is a decoy.
Waldreg still has the real weapon.
He inserts it into the mechanism, releasing the dam above the Southlands. Water flows through the network of tunnels the Orcs have dug and reaches the volcanic chamber beneath Orodruin.
The reaction causes Mount Doom to erupt.
Fire and ash destroy the landscape and block the sunlight, creating exactly the environment Adar wanted for his Orcs.
The Southlands become Mordor.
Adar believes he has created a homeland where the Orcs can exist outside Sauron’s control. The tragedy is that Sauron arrives in Mordor almost immediately afterward.
Is The Stranger Gandalf In Rings Of Power Season 1?
Season 1 confirms that the Stranger is an Istar, or Wizard, but it does not formally name him Gandalf during the first season.
The Stranger spends much of Season 1 frightened by his own power. Nori believes his choices matter more than whatever identity or destiny might be attached to him.
The Mystics eventually find the Stranger and initially believe he is Sauron. When he rejects them and uses his power against them, they recognize their mistake and identify him as an Istar.

Gil-galad and Celebrimbor believe the light of the Elves is fading and that mithril may be capable of preserving their people in Middle-earth.
This puts Elrond between two loyalties.
The Elves desperately want access to the material, but Elrond promised Durin he would keep the discovery secret.
Durin eventually agrees to help, but King Durin III refuses to risk the deeper mining required to collect enough mithril.

How Were The Three Elven Rings Forged?
Celebrimbor originally hopes to use mithril to create one powerful object capable of preserving the Elves.
The problem is quantity. The Elves possess only a small fragment.
Halbrand suggests treating the problem as one of combination rather than quantity. Instead of simply using the mithril by itself, Celebrimbor can combine it with another metal and potentially amplify its properties.
After discovering Halbrand is Sauron, Galadriel does not tell Celebrimbor exactly who he was. Instead, she insists that the Elves should create three objects rather than one.
One Ring could create absolute power. Two could divide. Three could create balance.
Galadriel gives Celebrimbor the dagger that belonged to Finrod. Its gold and silver came from Valinor and can be combined with the mithril.
The Elven smiths create three Rings that will eventually be known as:
- Nenya
- Vilya
- Narya
The first season ends with Galadriel, Elrond and Celebrimbor looking upon the completed Rings while Sauron enters Mordor.
What Happened To Númenor In Season 1?
Galadriel’s arrival in Númenor exposes a kingdom already divided over its relationship with the Elves.
Queen Regent Míriel knows her father Tar-Palantir remained sympathetic to the Faithful, but restoring that connection is politically dangerous. Pharazôn, meanwhile, understands how fear of Elven power can be used to build influence.
Míriel’s palantír shows a vision of Númenor being destroyed by a great wave. She initially fears Galadriel’s arrival may help cause that future, but eventually agrees to lead an expedition to the Southlands.
The mission appears successful until Mount Doom erupts.
Míriel loses her sight. Many Númenóreans die. Elendil believes Isildur has been killed, although the audience learns he survived.
When the expedition returns home, Tar-Palantir has died.
That leaves a wounded Míriel returning to a kingdom where Pharazôn is positioned to turn grief and uncertainty into political power.
