The Rings of Power Season 2.

Season 2 begins by showing us what happened to Sauron after Morgoth’s defeat. Sauron attempts to establish himself as the new leader of the Orcs, but Adar turns them against him and destroys his physical form. Sauron survives, slowly rebuilds himself, and eventually takes the human form we know as Halbrand. In the present, Halbrand returns to Mordor and allows Adar to imprison him. He convinces Adar that Sauron has returned and offers information that points the Orc leader toward Eregion. It is the beginning of a larger manipulation: Adar believes he is hunting Sauron while Sauron quietly directs him toward the place Sauron wants destroyed. At the same time, Galadriel, Elrond, Gil-galad and Círdan debate whether the Three Elven Rings can be trusted. Elrond fears anything touched by Sauron’s influence, while Galadriel believes the Rings may be necessary to stop the fading of the Elves. When the Rings restore the light in Lindon, Galadriel, Gil-galad and Círdan become their bearers. Sauron then reaches Eregion and reveals another form. He appears before Celebrimbor as Annatar, the Lord of Gifts, claiming to be a divine messenger sent to help the great Elven smith complete his work. Celebrimbor believes him because Annatar offers exactly what Celebrimbor wants: the opportunity to create something that will define his legacy. Together they create the Seven Rings for the Dwarves. When those Rings begin producing dangerous consequences, Sauron convinces Celebrimbor that the answer is not to stop. The answer is to improve the work by creating the Nine Rings for Men. Khazad-dûm becomes the clearest example of what the Rings can do. King Durin III uses one of the Seven and discovers a new ability to perceive the mountain. At first, the Ring appears to solve a genuine crisis by helping the Dwarves restore light to their kingdom. But protection becomes greed. Confidence becomes certainty. Durin III demands more from the mountain and increasingly ignores Durin IV and Disa as they warn him that something is wrong. In Númenor, another kind of corruption is underway. Míriel returns home weakened by the failed expedition to Middle-earth, while Pharazôn uses fear, resentment and political instability to consolidate power. The Faithful are persecuted, Elendil becomes increasingly isolated, and Númenor begins moving toward the division we know awaits it. Meanwhile, the Stranger, Nori and Poppy journey through Rhûn. The Stranger encounters Tom Bombadil and begins learning that his real challenge is not simply finding a staff or discovering his name. He has to decide what kind of person he will become once he has power. Everything eventually converges on Eregion. Adar brings his army to the city because he believes Sauron is hiding there. Elrond leads an Elven defense and expects Durin IV to send reinforcements from Khazad-dûm. But Durin cannot leave because the crisis with his father and the Ring has reached its breaking point. Inside Eregion, Sauron isolates Celebrimbor inside an illusion of peace. While the city falls around him, Celebrimbor continues working on the Nine. When Celebrimbor finally sees through the illusion, he realizes how completely Sauron has used his ambition against him. He manages to complete and hide the Nine, but Sauron eventually recovers them. Celebrimbor dies after warning Sauron that the Rings will ultimately become his prison and that one Ring will eventually destroy him. Outside the city, Adar briefly gains Nenya and uses it to heal the damage Sauron inflicted on him. He imagines another future for the Orcs — one in which they can finally leave Sauron behind. Instead, his own followers turn on him. The Orcs return their loyalty to Sauron and kill Adar in much the same way Adar once turned them against Sauron. In Khazad-dûm, Durin IV finally confronts his father and removes the Ring. But their mining has awakened the Balrog. King Durin III realizes what his choices have unleashed and sacrifices himself fighting the creature so his son can survive. In Rhûn, the Stranger chooses his friends over power and finally accepts the name that has been forming around him: Gandalf. And in Númenor, Pharazôn’s control deepens. Elendil escapes carrying Narsil while Míriel remains behind and the kingdom moves closer to the conflict that will define its future. By the end of Season 2, Sauron has the Nine Rings, the loyalty of the Orcs and a path toward open conquest. The age of wondering who Sauron is has ended. Now Middle-earth has to deal with what Sauron is going to do.

The relationship between Sauron and Celebrimbor is the dramatic center of Season 2 because Sauron does not control Celebrimbor primarily through fear. He controls him through praise, isolation, urgency and shame. Annatar tells Celebrimbor that his work matters. He encourages his belief that the Rings can change Middle-earth. When something goes wrong, Sauron does not tell Celebrimbor to stop. He convinces him that the failure means they must work harder. The manipulation succeeds because Celebrimbor’s desire is real. He wants to create something worthy of the greatest Elven smiths. Sauron simply turns that desire into the mechanism of his control. When Celebrimbor finally understands what has happened, the tragedy is not merely that Sauron lied to him. It is that Celebrimbor recognizes how much of the trap was built out of things he genuinely wanted.

Adar attacks Eregion because he believes destroying Sauron is the only way to prevent the Dark Lord from regaining control over the Orcs. Elrond leads the Elven defense while hoping Durin IV will send a Dwarven army from Khazad-dûm. The help never arrives because Durin is dealing with the corruption of his father and the growing danger beneath the mountain. Inside Eregion, Sauron continues controlling Celebrimbor while the city is destroyed around them. Celebrimbor eventually escapes the illusion, completes the Nine and attempts to keep them away from Sauron. He fails, but not before understanding what Sauron has done. Adar later uses Nenya and briefly imagines a future in which he and the Orcs can leave the cycle behind. Sauron has already reclaimed their loyalty, however, and Adar’s own followers kill him. The fall of Eregion gives Sauron almost everything he needs for the next phase of the story: the Nine, the Orcs and a broken Middle-earth entering open war.

The Seven Rings initially appear to save Khazad-dûm. King Durin III can perceive the mountain differently while wearing his Ring, allowing the Dwarves to restore the light their kingdom desperately needs. But the Ring gradually changes him. His desire to protect Khazad-dûm becomes greed and absolute certainty. He demands more from the mountain and refuses to listen to Durin IV and Disa. Durin IV eventually removes the Ring from his father, but their mining has already awakened the Balrog. Durin III finally sees what his choices have unleashed and sacrifices himself fighting the creature so his son can survive. The kingdom survives the immediate crisis, but the Balrog remains beneath Khazad-dûm and Durin IV is left with both his father’s loss and the consequences of everything the Ring set in motion.

Yes. The Stranger embraces the name Gandalf during the Season 2 finale. His story in Rhûn puts him in conflict with the Dark Wizard while Tom Bombadil helps him understand that possessing a staff is less important than becoming the kind of person capable of using power wisely. The decisive moment is not discovering a name. It is choosing Nori and Poppy over the pursuit of power. By the end of “Shadow And Flame,” the Stranger has a name, a staff and a much clearer understanding of who he wants to become.

Pharazôn takes advantage of Númenor’s fear and anger after the disastrous expedition to Middle-earth. Míriel returns politically vulnerable, and the appearance of a Great Eagle during her coronation is used by Pharazôn’s supporters to strengthen his claim to power. His government increasingly attacks the Faithful and treats connections to the Elves as evidence of disloyalty. Míriel survives a sea trial, but Pharazôn refuses to surrender control. Elendil eventually escapes carrying Narsil, while Míriel remains behind. The season leaves Númenor divided and moving toward the larger catastrophe awaiting it.

The Season 2 ending moves Sauron from secret manipulation into open conquest. He ends the finale with the Nine Rings and the loyalty of the Orc army. Celebrimbor is dead. Adar is dead. Eregion has fallen. The remaining Elves have been pushed into retreat. Galadriel survives her battle with Sauron and retains Nenya. Elrond and Gil-galad use the power of the Elven Rings to heal her, and the surviving Elves gather in the protected valley that will become Rivendell. Khazad-dûm survives after King Durin III sacrifices himself against the Balrog, leaving Durin IV with a damaged kingdom and a dangerous succession. The Stranger now knows he is Gandalf, but the Dark Wizard remains in Rhûn. In Númenor, Pharazôn’s political persecution continues while Elendil escapes with Narsil. Isildur is making his way home without knowing how completely his kingdom has changed. Each major storyline therefore ends in roughly the same place: the mystery is being replaced by responsibility. Sauron is no longer hiding. Gandalf knows who he is. Elrond is becoming a leader of the resistance. Durin IV has to inherit the consequences of his father’s reign. Elendil has to decide what he is willing to defend. Season 3 can begin with all of those identities already established and put them into direct conflict.

Season 3 begins five years after the fall of Eregion. Sauron’s armies have spread across Middle-earth, Barad-dûr has risen in Mordor, and the surviving free peoples are trying to hold their kingdoms together.

The Nine give Sauron a path toward corrupting mortal rulers. The Seven have already demonstrated what a Ring can do to a king who believes power is necessary to protect his people.

The next step is the Ring that can bring all the others under Sauron’s control: the One Ring.
