Can’t make it to LA for the 12th Annual Art of Television Costume Design Exhibition? Take our virtual tour of the Outlander Season 3 costume exhibit.
Obsessenachs, if you find yourself in the Los Angeles area, I highly recommend a stop at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising Museum. The FIDM Museum periodically displays arts and textile exhibits that are a visual feast for the eyes. If you get there by October 6, 2018, you’ll find a wonderful Outlander costume treat. In their 12th Annual Art of Television Costume Design Exhibition, the first collection you will encounter is from Outlander Season 3. It’s small, with a heavy dose of Terry Dresbach’s Emmy-nominated creations for Claire. Jamie’s boots are there, though, and they, alone, are worth the trip!
Located near the Staples Center, FIDM is easy to find, just off the 110. Public parking is nearby but neither my friend who went along nor I had driven in LA proper so we used Lyft. Admission is free so you can save your money for the gift shop. There you’l find treasures associated with the current exhibit along with accessories, books and items for the home.
Costume exhibits from other Emmy-nominated shows such as The Crown, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, The Alienist and more were there. But for those of you who can’t make it to Los Angeles within the next month, I offer you a virtual visual tour of Terry Dresbach and team’s gorgeous work on display in the Outlander exhibit…

Exhibit Introduction
The Introduction was a work of art in itself. The text, however, was difficult to capture with my iPhone camera, so here’s a transcript:
Quick – name your favorite television show from the past season! Chances are you were struck by how the characters were dressed. Do you remember a sleek contemporary look, a futuristic uniform, or an evocative historic gown? We have costume designers and their teams to thank for creating these lasting impressions.
This year’s exhibition highlights the skills that designers, costumers, wardrobe supervisors, cutters, fitters, and all department crew members have mastered to bring these characters to life. We invite you to explore the stunning variety of costumes from the 2017-2018 television season, including Emmy Award-nominated shows. You just might find a new binge-worth series to love!

Jamie and Claire

Professor Randall and 1960s Claire
Jamie
I wanted to touch those boots SO badly but, alas, I’m a rule-follower. Taking close-ups did up the heart rate.
Claire
Seeing the batsuit in person reminded me of a Terry Dresbach tweet where she said they made multiple copies of the batsuit. She couldn’t remember if it was 10 or 12.
Loved these two “All Debts Paid” costumes. You might remember them from Bree’s graduation and Claire and Frank’s last encounter.
Frank
And Frank… oh, Frank. While fan reactions to your continued presence in the show might be mixed, celebrating Terry’s work costuming actor Tobias Menzies found only rousing applause from me.
While Terry did not take home an Emmy this week, she’s set the gold-statue bar high for adoring fans worldwide for her contributions to Outlander.
Hope you enjoyed the tour!
What Outlander costume would you most like to see in person? Which has been your favorite?
WOW!!! Thank you verrrry much
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed!! Which photo was your favorite?
What a treat! Thank you!
Thanks! Nice to hear you enjoyed. Which photo was your favorite?
I Love the costumes. The workmanship and detail is exquisite. Being a seamstress and having the ability to see these outfits this close… leaves me speechless.
Just wish there were more!
Thank you!!
Barbara
Thanks! I sewed a bit, especially when I was young so also appreciated the work that goes in to that level of detail. Which piece was your favorite?
Wish that I could see costumes from Season 2- in France. CLAIRE’s wardrobe & Jamie’s were magnificent. I loved her red gown. Jamie’s waistcoats were amazing.
Agree! It would be nice if Sony would take them on tour. I’d pay to see them!! Which Exhibit piece was your favorite?
Can you please tell me what is the color of Frank’s suit? Thanks
The coat and slacks are very dark brown and the sweater / jumper is rust. Was it your favorite?
I love your close-ups of the details. I wish they could also have displayed the outfits Brianna and Claire wore to the memorial gathering honoring Frank, but I do like the ones on display. Thanks for sharing these for those of us who have no chance of visiting in person!
Truly my pleasure, Connie. I was a little surprised that they entered three costumes for Claire.
Oh thank you so much for sharing…your pictures are excellent…I wish they would have had Alexander Malcoms suit with the shawl…I loved how Jamie looked in his hat and shawl walking down the street…my favorite scene of season 3…
That shawl was amazing, wasn’t it?! I haven’t noticed it in the Season 4 promos. Hope it makes an appearance! Glad you enjoyed the photos.

Would love to see a traveling show of the costumes for all four seasons. More on west coast…wedding dress, red dress, Jamie’s wedding costume..all of it..
Agree! We need a worldwide tour!!
So what size are Frank and Jamie’s shoes? 😉
Hmmm, good question! Hubby is an engineer. I’ll see if he can approximate for us. ?

So much Button porn! 🙂
Yes! And stock and belt and buckle. ? As I said, I really wanted to touch those boots. FIDM staff were kind to let me get the camera really close.

This is so neat to see. I think Jamie’s costume is my favorite. I’ve loved some of Claire’s past costumes but I wants as into season 3’s costuming as much for her. I love the Yellow dress from season 2 so… But Jamie’s garb. Love it.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Jill! So glad you enjoyed my wee tale. Jamie’s costumes always make me smile. Especially love his boots!!
The Boots! I’ve been wondering if they were built as one or buckled over a shoe. Looks like they’re all one. Great pics!
Rebecca aka The Outlandish Clothier on Facebook
Yes, Rebecca! Even tho Terry Dresbach says they’re gaiters (two pieces), they definitely looked liked boots to me!!
