If you want the fast answer, Peter’s mutation matters because it converts the ending of No Way Home from emotional fallout into active story pressure. The trailer is telling you that the cost of Peter’s decision did not end when everyone forgot him. It evolved.
What the mutation is doing structurally
The cleanest craft label for this is Body as Receipt. Peter’s life is out of balance, so the body starts carrying the evidence. That is why the trailer gives us collapse, cocooning, sensory overload, involuntary webbing, and Banner’s warning about DNA mutation. The point is not biology trivia. The point is that Peter’s internal fracture now has a clock and a shape.
Why that helps the movie
Longing by itself is atmospheric. You can only watch a hero stare sadly at the life he lost for so long before the drama starts idling. Mutation fixes that. Once Peter’s body becomes unstable, every scene means two things at once. He is dealing with danger in the city and discovering that his own powers may be changing under him.
That gives the movie momentum. It also keeps the story honest about the ending of No Way Home. Peter chose the sacrifice. The choice was necessary. But necessity does not erase consequence. The bill always comes due. Here it looks like it is arriving through the organism.
The three best receipts in the trailer
1. The cocoon. That is the clearest sign the body is acting without permission. Peter is no longer just using his powers. His powers are doing something back.
2. The failed reach for the web shot. That beat matters because it shows confusion inside the muscle memory. Peter still reaches like the old system is in place, but the body is already shifting under the habit.
3. Banner’s line. “If DNA is mutating, it could be enormously dangerous.” Good. That gives the audience a plain-language warning while the visuals do the more interesting work.
What it sets up next
This mutation plot does not just raise the stakes for Brand New Day. It re-centers Spider-Man around a classic pressure point: Peter Parker and Spider-Man are no longer cooperating cleanly. That is the kind of problem that creates real choices, real fear, and real change.
