In our Blood of My Blood Season 2 Episode 4 review and recap, Mary and Blake discuss “A Portion of My Soul,” an episode that makes Lord Lovat’s warning about Brian Fraser unexpectedly devastating. Brian’s decision to reject his father has consequences for the MacKenzies and for the family Jamie will someday remember, while Henry and Julia’s long-awaited reunion raises painful questions about memory, trauma, and whether either of them can recover the life they once shared.
The conversation follows the episode’s big emotional choices, from Brian and Dougal’s uneasy alliance to Arch Bug’s surprising mercy toward Henry and Seema’s dangerous conviction that Henry loved her. Mary and Blake also share their recorded Kilt Ratings, debate how the two romantic reunions are filmed, and explore why so many characters seem to be searching for a different version of themselves. Spoiler warning: This recap and reaction discusses Episode 2.04 and important events from the original Outlander, including Brian’s eventual fate.

Blood of My Blood Season 2 Episode 4 Recap: What Happens in “A Portion of My Soul”?
Ellen and Grace bring news of Lord Lovat’s betrayal to Brian, who confronts his father over a bargain intended to restore Simon Fraser’s lands and title. Brian rejects his father’s plan, chooses Ellen, and loses his inherited place among the Frasers. He and Ellen reach Dougal before the MacKenzie forces are caught in the danger surrounding Inverness, and Brian’s decision forces Dougal to consider whether the man who abandoned his clan can nevertheless be trusted as an ally. The aftermath of the attack on Leoch also hangs over their preparation for the coming conflict.
Henry returns through the stones and finds himself captive among the Grants again. Murdina Bug believes the strange marks on his head are connected to the Fair Folk, persuading Arch to stage the whipping he has been ordered to administer. Julia disguises herself to reach Henry, and their reunion reveals the extent of the damage caused by the treatment Henry received in the asylum, including his inability to remember their daughter Claire. Their happiness is complicated further when Julia confronts Henry about his encounter with Seema and the truth he withheld.
As Brian and Ellen reaffirm their commitment and Ellen tells him she is pregnant, Murtagh and Grace navigate their own uncertain attachment. Grace gives Murtagh a handmade flower that carries a memory of her mother, while the behavior of Cameron toward Grace troubles Mary during the podcast. At Castle Leathers, Seema confronts Julia with her belief that Henry loved her even while thinking he was with his wife, and the encounter ends with Julia threatened and trapped. The episode leaves several families facing war, separation, and choices they cannot easily undo.
Our Kilt Ratings and BOMB Impact Scores
Mary’s Kilt Rating: 4.3/5. Blake’s Kilt Rating: 3.9/5. Their different scores reflect an episode with powerful character moments and several frustrating storytelling conveniences. Mary’s favorite details include Bear McCreary’s music during the riding scenes and Henry’s renewed habit of writing letters to Julia. Blake praises Arch Bug’s moment of mercy and especially Brian’s confrontation with Dougal, while remaining uneasy about Henry and Julia’s intimate reunion.
BOMB Impact: Mary 4/5; Blake 4.5/5. They connect Brian’s break with Lovat to Jamie’s later relationships, consider the consequences of Henry losing his memories of Claire, and revisit the original Outlander history of Arch and Murdina Bug. These are the scores Mary and Blake settled on during the recording; Blake revised his Kilt Rating from an initial 3.95 to 3.9.
Why Lord Lovat’s Warning About Brian Hits So Hard
When Simon Fraser predicts that love will ruin Brian, Blake immediately thinks of what the audience already knows about Brian’s death in the original series. That dramatic irony adds weight to the father-and-son conflict: Simon measures the future through political power and the recovery of his title, while Brian chooses the life and family he wants to build with Ellen. His decision costs him the protection and identity he inherited, and it offers a clearer picture of the values Jamie Fraser will grow up admiring.
Brian’s subsequent exchange with Dougal is Blake’s Great for the episode. Dougal looks at Brian’s sacrifice and sees a man willing to abandon his clan, even while Brian sees proof that he can remain loyal to the person he loves. The two reach a limited understanding because the immediate political stakes demand cooperation. For Blake, the argument works because both men act from established values and the new relationship is earned through the scene.
Henry and Julia’s Reunion Divides Mary and Blake
Mary’s Great is Henry writing to Julia again, a detail that recalls the letters that sustained their relationship during the First World War. The moment he looks up and sees her carries an especially powerful charge because he continues struggling to distinguish memory from reality. The revelation that he has forgotten Claire is heartbreaking, and the couple must also confront what happened during his separation from Julia.
Blake is uncomfortable with Julia asking Henry to recover the man he was before the stones, the asylum, and the experiences that have changed him. He also questions the decision to visually parallel their intimacy with Brian and Ellen’s. Mary offers a different perspective, connecting their reunion to the way Jamie and Claire sometimes reclaim each other after painful separation. Their disagreement becomes one of the episode’s most personal discussions: how do two people build a marriage after both have changed?
Seema and the Meaning of “A Portion of My Soul”
Seema’s final confrontation with Julia leads Blake to his central interpretation of the episode. Seema knows Henry believed he was with his wife during their encounter, yet she has convinced herself that his expressions of love belong to her because she was physically present. Blake reads that conviction as an effort to occupy Julia’s emotional place in Henry’s life, an unsettling variation on the desire to become somebody else.
That interpretation draws together Brian rejecting his inherited identity, Lovat seeking to restore his, Ellen choosing a home beyond the MacKenzie clan, and Henry struggling with the person his experiences have made him. The hosts also criticize how easily Seema learns Julia’s private information: Mary believes Julia is far too intelligent to announce Henry’s return within earshot of someone sent to monitor him, while Blake wants Seema’s manipulation to grow more visibly from her own choices.
Arch Bug, Grace, and the Details Worth Discussing
Arch’s decision to spare Henry reveals how much his bond with Murdina shapes his behavior, especially after the loss they have endured together. Mary and Blake also discuss Grace’s handmade purple flower for Murtagh and their fears about what the coming war may mean for the couple. Mary is especially troubled by Cameron’s treatment of Grace and Murtagh’s limited response.
And because this is still Mary and Blake, the conversation finds room for Bear McCreary’s wonderful horse-riding music, a debate about why Henry keeps ending up with the Grants, and Mary’s observation that Lovat’s men saying “Aye” sound like the seagulls from Finding Nemo. The episode closes with their customary questions that have absolutely nothing to do with Blood of My Blood.
