Blood of My Blood Season 2 Episode 5 Recap & Reaction: Forgive Me, Father | Murtagh’s Promise STEALS The Episode

Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 Episode 5 takes its characters to the Battle of Sheriffmuir, where one quiet conversation changes how Mary and Blake see the original Outlander. Before the fighting begins, Brian Fraser asks Murtagh to protect Ellen and their child if Brian does not survive. Knowing the man Murtagh will become makes his answer devastating.

In this spoiler-filled recap and reaction, Mary and Blake celebrate the scale and sound of the battle while debating whether the episode can balance war with the dangers facing Ellen and Julia. Mary gives “Forgive Me, Father” 4.5 out of 5 kilts; Blake gives it 4 out of 5. Both agree that Brian and Murtagh deliver something special.

Spoilers: This discussion covers all of Season 2 Episode 5 and makes connections to events in the original Outlander, including Culloden.

What Happens in Blood of My Blood Season 2 Episode 5?

At Sheriffmuir, Brian, Murtagh, Dougal and Henry are swept into a brutal Jacobite battle. Before it begins, Brian asks Murtagh to look after Ellen and the baby if anything happens to him. Rupert dies, and the fighting produces no clear victory. Henry chooses to stay and help the men around him, including Arch Bug, and draws the attention of Captain Gerard Grey.

Dougal cannot accept the army’s decision to stop pushing forward. He launches his own attack on a government supply train, but he and Old Angus are captured. Brian and Murtagh prepare to go to Fort William to get them back.

Elsewhere, Robert MacKinney threatens Ellen and Grace in revenge for his father’s death. Ellen nearly talks him down before Balloch arrives, kills Robert and takes Ellen away. At Leoch, Colum faces difficult feelings about his family and the choices he has made, while Jocasta talks about the life and love she was denied.

At Castle Leathers, Seema insists she can replace Julia in Henry and William’s lives. Julia keeps trying to calm her, but the confrontation turns violent and Julia kills Seema to survive. Her struggle plays beneath the words of a loving letter to Henry, and she breaks down after Davina returns with William.

Our Kilt Ratings: The Battle Is Great, but Does the Whole Episode Work?

Mary gives the episode 4.5 kilts because she loved the battle and the intensity of Julia’s fight for her family. Blake lands on 4 kilts. The Brian–Murtagh scene and the battle would score even higher on their own, but Blake feels the other stories are too stretched out and that the frequent cuts interrupt their momentum.

That difference is the heart of the conversation: can an episode be full of excellent scenes while still feeling uneven as a whole?

Why Brian and Murtagh’s Promise Changes the Original Outlander

For Blake, the best scene happens before Sheriffmuir begins. Brian and Murtagh share nervous humor, prepare for the possibility that they will die, and finally speak openly about the people they love. The approaching cannon fire gives their quiet exchange a terrible deadline.

Brian does not merely ask a favor. He gives Murtagh a responsibility that will shape the rest of his life: look after Ellen and the child they are expecting. Mary and Blake discuss how the promise gives Murtagh’s later devotion to Jamie Fraser a more personal meaning. His loyalty comes from friendship, love and a choice made with Brian when the future was uncertain.

The recording also connects two generations of Rupert: Old Rupert dies at Sheriffmuir, while the Rupert viewers know from the original Outlander meets his end at Culloden. Blake finds that echo especially moving because it adds a new layer to how the younger Rupert faces his own fate.

Sheriffmuir, Henry and the Episode’s Editing

Both hosts admire the battle’s physical weight, the sound design, Dougal rallying the men and the fear of soldiers waiting in the mist. Director Emer Conroy uses the image of a blood-covered horse as a visual thread through the fighting and the stories away from the battlefield.

Blake likes the idea of linking all these dangers but does not think every transition lands. One cut works beautifully for him: a downward sword strike in the battle is matched with Robert MacKinney lowering his gun toward Ellen. Other transitions make the episode feel choppy and leave the audience without a clear sense of how much time has passed.

Henry creates another disagreement. Blake thinks the battle could have pushed more deeply into Henry’s First World War trauma. Mary understands that idea but is glad the episode allows Henry to act in a real situation after the confusion and suffering he has already endured. They agree that his decision to help others—and the arrival of Captain Gerard Grey—gives him a compelling path forward.

Julia, Seema and the Price of Surviving

Mary calls Julia her standout character of the hour. Julia stays calm, buys time and tries to avoid violence until Seema leaves her no other choice. Mary wonders what taking a life will do to Julia, a woman who has spent so much of the series trying to keep her family alive.

Blake loves the contrast between Julia’s loving letter and the desperate fight playing under it. His complaint is about the build-up: Seema and Julia repeat much of the same conflict before the sequence finally reaches its strongest turn. They also discuss whether the strange timing of Davina’s return should be read as an intentional mystery or simply the result of the edit.

What Happens Next? Ellen, Lovat and the Stones

Ellen’s capture creates a new problem for Brian just as he and Murtagh head toward Fort William. Blake wonders whether Lord Lovat could discover that Ellen controls the MacKenzie lands and try to use that fact against her. Mary tests the theory by asking what Ellen’s handfasting with Brian would mean for her legal position. These are predictions, not events the episode confirms.

Then the conversation gets delightfully strange. Mary and Blake wonder whether Julia and Henry will reach the stones again, whether they might miss Claire by a matter of moments, and whether their search could eventually bring them into contact with Frank Randall. Their guesses are deliberately speculative, and the episode ends without confirming any of them.
