Temperatures are dipping and the season is changing, but one thing remaining the same is the vital role volunteers play in our state and in our communities.

And as we continue to live through an historic and unpredictable time, it is important to consider ways we can all lend a hand and help others.

Higher Ground International seeks help providing food to seniors through its African Elders Enrichment Program. Volunteers are needed to deliver hot meals on Mondays; pack food bags on Wednesdays; and distribute food on Thursdays. Training is provided. To help, sign-up online or by contacting Shemika Moore at shemika.hgibrokenpieces@gmail.com, or (401) 270-3582.

United Way of Rhode Island is hosting a virtual project for National Family Volunteer Day on November 21. Called “Peace Cranes: Envisioning a ‘New Better’ RI,” families are invited to make origami peace cranes while envisioning what they’d like Rhode Island’s post-COVID world to look like. Legend has it that making 1,000 peace cranes makes wishes come true. Following the event, the peace cranes will be placed on display. Contact Janice at volunteer@uwri.org or (401) 444-0634 to learn more.

The Rhode Island Advisory Commission on Historical Cemeteries is recruiting individuals and groups to help with fall cleanups at the state’s oldest cemeteries. Volunteers will be assigned their own cemetery to rake, prune and perform general maintenance. Contact Pegee Malcolm at pmalcolm@cox.net, or (401) 527-1823.
