PRODUCER’S NOTES & TRANSCRIPT | Blood of My Blood 2.03: Highland Home Alone Was Fun. But Did Anything Actually Change?

Inside The NerdClan · Mary & Blake’s Producer’s Notes

Go inside our preparation for “Rabbits Don’t Swim”—and see how Highland Home Alone turned into a much bigger argument about movement, consequence and whether an episode can feel busy without actually changing enough.

Spoilers through “Rabbits Don’t Swim” only. The theory material below includes speculation from the recording. We also flag where a post-recording canon check complicated one of those theories.

I went into this episode already knowing my problem: I had fun, but I did not trust the consequences. Castle Leoch becomes Highland Home Alone, Ellen weaponizes every assumption MacKinney makes about her, Janet dies, Maura stands up to him, Colum changes his mind about Brian, and Lovat quietly moves the war underneath everybody’s feet.

Mary had a much easier time going with it. She loved the Home Alone construction, loved the women taking control of the castle and thought the flashbacks gave Ellen exactly the kind of inheritance the episode wanted to dramatize. That disagreement turned the recording into a more useful question than “was this good?” How much does an episode have to change before all of its movement starts to feel like consequence?

And then Mary gave Janet a muffin.

That ridiculous little joke became one of the clearest craft ideas of the entire conversation: sometimes a death does not need more plot. It needs one specific human detail that makes the person feel like somebody before the story asks us to miss them.
