Who Is Janet MacKenzie In Blood Of My Blood? Why This Makes Jenny Fraser’s Name Hurt More

Janet MacKenzie is Ellen MacKenzie’s sister in Outlander: Blood of My Blood, and Season 2 Episode 3 turns her into a surprisingly important piece of Fraser family history.

Janet dies helping Ellen and the women of Castle Leoch fight James MacKinney’s men in “Rabbits Don’t Swim.” Before she dies, Ellen reveals that she is pregnant and promises that if she has a daughter, the girl will bear Janet’s name.

That future daughter becomes one of the most important women in Outlander: Janet “Jenny” Fraser.

Which means Blood of My Blood has just given Jenny Fraser’s name a heartbreaking origin story.

Who Is Janet MacKenzie?

Janet is one of Red Jacob MacKenzie’s daughters and therefore the sister of Ellen, Colum, Dougal, Jocasta and the other MacKenzie siblings growing up at Castle Leoch.

She has occupied a relatively small place in Blood of My Blood compared with Ellen, Colum and Dougal, but “Rabbits Don’t Swim” pulls her directly into the action when James MacKinney seizes Castle Leoch while many of the MacKenzie men are away.

Ellen realizes MacKinney’s greatest weakness almost immediately: he does not consider the women around him dangerous. The women exploit that arrogance, using the castle itself against his men and gradually dismantling the occupation from inside Leoch.

Janet becomes part of that resistance.

How Does Janet MacKenzie Die?

Janet is mortally wounded while helping the women fight MacKinney’s men.

By the time Ellen reaches her, everyone understands what is happening. Janet begins giving practical instructions about her burial and asks Ellen to tell Ambrose that she loves him. Ellen holds her sister while the women gather around them.

Then Ellen gives Janet something to hold onto.

She reveals that she is pregnant and promises that if the baby is a girl, she will carry Janet’s name.

Janet responds with the name that longtime Outlander viewers immediately recognize: Janet Fraser.

The women pray together as Janet dies.

Why Does Ellen Name Her Daughter After Janet?

Ellen’s promise transforms Janet’s death into a direct connection between Blood of My Blood and the Fraser family we eventually meet in Outlander.

Ellen and Brian Fraser eventually have a daughter named Janet Fraser. Everybody calls her Jenny.

Jenny grows up at Lallybroch, marries Ian Murray, and becomes one of the defining members of Jamie Fraser’s family. She is tough, stubborn, politically sharp, ferociously loyal and perfectly willing to tell Jamie exactly when he is being an idiot.

Until now, “Jenny” was simply part of the Fraser family history we inherited when Outlander began.

Blood of My Blood gives that name a memory.

If the series follows through on the promise made in “Rabbits Don’t Swim,” Ellen names her daughter Janet because another Janet MacKenzie died fighting beside her at Castle Leoch.

Is Janet MacKenzie The Same Person As Jenny Fraser?

No. They are aunt and niece.

Janet MacKenzie is Ellen’s sister. Jenny Fraser is Ellen’s daughter.

The potential confusion comes from Jenny’s name. “Jenny” is the familiar name everyone uses, but Janet is the name Ellen promises to give a future daughter.

So when Janet softly repeats “Janet Fraser” before she dies, the scene is playing with two timelines at once. Janet hears the name of a future niece she will never meet, while the audience hears the name of a woman we already know.

That is the part of the scene that lands hardest.

Is Ellen Already Pregnant When Janet Dies?

Yes. Ellen reveals the pregnancy while holding Janet.

There is an important caveat, though: the child Ellen is currently carrying may not actually be Jenny. If Blood of My Blood keeps the established Fraser family chronology, Ellen and Brian’s son William comes before Jenny.

That does not change Ellen’s promise. She says that if the child is a girl, she will name her Janet. If this baby is William, the promise can simply wait until Ellen eventually has a daughter.

In some ways, that makes the connection even better. Ellen does not make an impulsive promise that happens to come true a few months later. She carries her sister’s memory forward until there is finally a daughter who can receive the name.

We break down the pregnancy question in our full Ellen pregnancy explainer.

Blood Of My Blood Gives Janet A New Fate

The television series is giving Janet a much more dramatic fate than the broader published family history traditionally associated with the character.

Rather than leaving Janet’s death in the background, Blood of My Blood brings it directly into the central story and connects it to Ellen’s future family.

That is a meaningful adaptation choice because Janet’s death now accomplishes something beyond removing a member of the MacKenzie family. It creates a piece of inherited memory that can survive into the next generation.

The show has been doing this throughout the prequel: taking names, marriages, grudges and family connections that existed as history in Outlander and asking what emotional event might have created them.

Jenny’s name is now part of that project.

Why Janet’s Death Matters To Jenny Fraser

Jenny will never know the aunt whose name she carries, but the audience does.

That changes the emotional texture of the Fraser family in a subtle way. Jenny’s name is no longer simply something Ellen and Brian selected for their daughter. It becomes a memorial inside the family.

And there is something wonderfully appropriate about Jenny Fraser carrying the name of a woman who died fighting for her home.

Jenny spends much of her own life doing exactly that.

She protects Lallybroch. She protects her children. She protects Jamie even when protecting him means fighting with him. Home and family are not abstract ideas to Jenny Fraser; they are things she actively defends.

Blood of My Blood now suggests that her very name comes from another MacKenzie woman who did the same thing.

Janet MacKenzie’s Real Legacy May Be Jenny Fraser

Janet herself does not get nearly as much screen time as Ellen, Colum or Dougal, and that makes her sudden death difficult to carry entirely on its own. But the connection to Jenny gives the character a legacy beyond Episode 3.

She becomes part of the invisible history underneath the Fraser family.

Years later, Jamie Fraser will grow up beside a sister everybody calls Jenny. Viewers already know how important she becomes to Jamie, Ian, Lallybroch and the generations that follow.

Now Blood of My Blood is telling us that every time someone calls her Jenny, there may be another woman quietly living inside that name.
