Is Ellen Pregnant In Blood Of My Blood? Yes — But The Baby May Not Be Jenny Fraser

Yes, Ellen MacKenzie is pregnant in Outlander: Blood of My Blood. Season 2 Episode 3, “Rabbits Don’t Swim,” quietly confirms it during one of the saddest moments of the episode. But there is an important wrinkle for longtime Outlander fans: the baby Ellen is carrying may not be Jenny Fraser.

And that makes Ellen’s promise to her dying sister Janet even more interesting, because the episode may be planting the origin of Jenny’s name years before Jenny herself is born.

Blood Of My Blood Episode 3 Confirms Ellen Is Pregnant

The reveal comes during the siege of Castle Leoch after Ellen’s sister Janet is mortally wounded helping the women fight James MacKinney’s men. As Ellen holds her dying sister, she gives Janet one final piece of good news: Letitia is not the only woman in the family who is expecting a child.

Ellen tells Janet that she is pregnant too, then promises that if the baby is a girl, she will carry Janet’s name. Janet responds by trying the name aloud: “Janet Fraser.”

It is a small line in the middle of an emotional death scene, but for anyone who knows the Fraser family tree, it is a giant neon sign pointing toward someone we already know very well.

Is Ellen Pregnant With Jenny Fraser?

The episode does not say. It only confirms Ellen is pregnant and that she intends to name a future daughter after Janet.

But if Blood of My Blood keeps the established Fraser family chronology, this baby is more likely to be William Fraser, Ellen and Brian’s eldest son, rather than Jenny. (Though the Maisri Prophecy has us wondering if William is actually William Beauchamps, but who knows?!)

That distinction matters because Ellen’s promise is conditional. She says that if the child is a girl, she will bear Janet’s name. Nothing in the scene requires this pregnancy to become Jenny immediately.

So the emotional payoff may be delayed. Ellen can be carrying William now while carrying the promise to Janet forward until she eventually has a daughter.

Who Is William Fraser?

William Fraser is the eldest child traditionally associated with Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, making him the older brother of Jenny and Jamie Fraser.

He has always occupied a much smaller place in the larger Outlander story because he dies young, before the events that define Jamie’s adult life. That makes him exactly the kind of family-history character a prequel can potentially expand.

Blood of My Blood has repeatedly taken names and relationships that once existed mostly as backstory and turned them into living people with their own emotional consequences. If Ellen is carrying William now, the pregnancy reveal may be doing more than teasing Jenny. It may be opening another branch of the Fraser family history for the series to explore.

Why Ellen’s Promise To Janet Still Matters

The important part of the scene is not really which child Ellen is carrying. It is the promise.

Janet dies believing that some part of her will continue. Ellen cannot save her sister, but she can make sure Janet’s name survives beyond Castle Leoch. Years later, when Ellen and Brian have a daughter, that promise can become Janet “Jenny” Fraser.

That gives Jenny’s name a new emotional history the original Outlander series never needed to explain.

Jenny has always felt unmistakably like Ellen’s daughter even though we never got to watch Ellen raise her. She is stubborn, fiercely protective of her family, perfectly willing to challenge the men around her, and completely anchored to home and family. Blood of My Blood now adds another woman to that inheritance.

Jenny may carry Ellen’s fire, but she may carry Janet’s name because Ellen watched her sister die protecting their family.

Is Janet MacKenzie The Same Person As Jenny Fraser?

No. Janet MacKenzie and Jenny Fraser are two different women.

Janet MacKenzie is Ellen’s sister in Blood of My Blood. Jenny Fraser is Ellen and Brian’s future daughter and Jamie Fraser’s sister in Outlander.

The connection is the name. Jenny’s formal name is Janet, and “Rabbits Don’t Swim” appears to give that name an origin story by having Ellen promise her dying sister that a future daughter will be named for her.

What Ellen’s Pregnancy Means For Blood Of My Blood

The pregnancy is also another reminder that Ellen and Brian’s story is rapidly moving toward the family we already know.

Their romance began as the great forbidden relationship at the center of Blood of My Blood. Now the consequences are becoming much larger than the two of them. Their children are beginning to enter the story, which means the bridge between this prequel and Jamie Fraser’s world is getting shorter.

That is why Ellen’s pregnancy feels like more than an Easter egg. We are no longer simply watching the story of Jamie Fraser’s parents falling in love. We are beginning to watch the Fraser family itself come into existence.

And somewhere inside that future is a little girl named Janet who the entire Outlander fandom will know as Jenny.
