The Blood of My Blood family tree connects two sides of the Outlander story. Jamie Fraser comes from the Fraser and MacKenzie families through his parents, Brian Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie. Claire comes from Henry Beauchamp and Julia Moriston, whose story becomes much more complicated once Blood of My Blood puts Claire’s parents into the same 18th-century world as Jamie’s.

That sounds simple until you start adding Lord Lovat, Red Jacob, Colum, Dougal, Jocasta, Murtagh, the Grants, baby William, and about twelve generations of accumulated Scottish emotional damage.

The easiest way to understand the prequel is to separate the family tree into three groups: Jamie’s MacKenzie side, Jamie’s Fraser side, and Claire’s Beauchamp family. The Grants and Murtagh then sit around those branches as relationships that become politically or emotionally important without forming Jamie or Claire’s direct ancestral line.

Jamie Fraser’s Family: The MacKenzie Side

Jamie’s maternal family begins with Red Jacob MacKenzie, the laird of Clan MacKenzie at the beginning of Blood of My Blood. His death in the premiere does more than kick off a succession problem at Castle Leoch. It exposes all of the tensions inside the family that will eventually become Jamie’s maternal inheritance.

Red Jacob’s children include Ellen, Colum, Dougal, Janet and Jocasta MacKenzie. That means the younger versions of Colum, Dougal and Jocasta we meet in the prequel are not simply familiar Outlander characters being dropped into the story for nostalgia. They are Jamie Fraser’s future uncles and aunt.

Ellen MacKenzie

Ellen MacKenzie is Jamie Fraser’s mother. In Blood of My Blood, however, Jamie does not exist yet. Ellen is still the eldest MacKenzie daughter trying to survive the political consequences of her father’s death while her family repeatedly attempts to turn her marriage into a tool for preserving the clan.

That makes Ellen one of the most important pieces of the entire prequel. We already know where her story eventually leads, but Blood of My Blood makes us watch the choices that create that future. Her relationship with Brian is therefore not just a romance. It is the point where the Fraser and MacKenzie branches of Jamie’s family tree collide.

Colum MacKenzie

Colum is Ellen’s brother and Jamie’s maternal uncle. Season 1 shows him growing into the political role Outlander fans already know he will eventually occupy as laird of Clan MacKenzie.

That relationship matters because Jamie’s complicated history with Castle Leoch does not begin when he arrives there as an adult. The people running that world are his mother’s family. Blood of My Blood gives us the younger Colum before Jamie exists and lets us see some of the wounds, ambitions and family pressures behind the man we meet later.

Dougal MacKenzie

Dougal is another of Ellen’s brothers, making him Jamie Fraser’s maternal uncle as well. He becomes Colum’s military counterpart and war chieftain, and Season 1 repeatedly shows how differently the brothers understand leadership, loyalty and power.

That becomes particularly interesting when you remember the Dougal we eventually meet in Outlander. The prequel is not simply explaining where his politics come from. It is showing how his relationship with his family is already being built around the same mixture of loyalty, resentment, impulsiveness and ambition that will later make him both useful and dangerous.

Jocasta And Janet MacKenzie

Jocasta and Janet are Ellen’s sisters and therefore Jamie’s maternal aunts. Jocasta becomes especially important because Outlander viewers already know how much larger her place in Jamie and Claire’s lives eventually becomes.

Season 1 gives Jocasta a meaningful role in Ellen’s story, particularly as the MacKenzie family begins cracking under the pressure created by marriage alliances and clan politics. Janet has a smaller place in the television story so far, but she remains another piece of the MacKenzie family surrounding Ellen.

Jamie Fraser’s Family: The Fraser Side

The other half of Jamie’s ancestry is considerably messier.

Brian Fraser is the son of Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat, and Davina Porter. Brian is born outside of marriage while Davina works within the Lovat household, which leaves him permanently connected to Lord Lovat without ever being allowed to forget the difference between blood and legitimacy.

That tension is one of the reasons Brian matters as more than “Jamie’s dad.” His relationship with his father gives Blood of My Blood a chance to explore the kind of power Jamie will eventually spend much of his own life resisting: fathers, lairds and political leaders who believe blood gives them ownership over the people beneath them.

Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat

Simon Fraser is Brian’s father and therefore Jamie Fraser’s paternal grandfather. That makes Lord Lovat one of the clearest direct bridges between the prequel and Jamie’s eventual family history.

It also makes his treatment of Brian much more than villainous clan politics. Every attempt Lord Lovat makes to control Brian is happening inside Jamie’s own family line. When the prequel asks whether Brian can become his own man rather than merely his father’s son, it is already playing with a question Outlander will later ask about Jamie in different forms.

Davina Porter

Davina Porter is Brian Fraser’s mother and Jamie’s paternal grandmother. Her position inside Lord Lovat’s household makes Brian’s origins particularly important because his family line comes from two people with radically different amounts of social power.

Davina also becomes an important connection between Brian’s story and Julia’s in Season 1. The prequel repeatedly uses these family relationships to ask who gets protected, who gets recognized, and what legitimacy actually means when everyone involved is still bound by blood.

Where Does Murtagh Fit In The Blood Of My Blood Family Tree?

Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser is family, but he is not one of Jamie’s direct ancestors. He is related to Brian through the Fraser family and is Brian’s close companion long before he becomes the man Outlander viewers know as Jamie’s godfather.

That distinction is useful because Murtagh can be confusing on a family tree. He belongs on the Fraser branch, but not directly between Lord Lovat, Brian and Jamie.

Season 1 adds another layer by making Murtagh’s feelings for Ellen part of the story. That means his eventual devotion to Jamie carries an emotional history that begins before Jamie is even born.

Claire’s Family: Henry Beauchamp And Julia Moriston

Claire’s side of the family tree initially appears much simpler. Henry Beauchamp and Julia Moriston are Claire’s parents. Their relationship begins during World War I, before the prequel turns their story into something nobody watching the original series could have reasonably expected.

Instead of keeping Claire’s family history isolated in the 20th century, Blood of My Blood sends Henry and Julia into the 18th century. Suddenly Jamie’s parents and Claire’s parents are not merely parallel love stories separated by two centuries. Their lives exist on the same historical board.

That is the enormous structural trick hiding inside this family tree. Jamie’s side is complicated because of clans, marriage and political inheritance. Claire’s side is complicated because time itself has stopped behaving.

Who Is William In Blood Of My Blood?

William is the son of Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp. His birth becomes one of Season 1’s biggest additions to Claire’s family history because it means Claire has a brother within the television continuity established by Blood of My Blood.

Season 1 ends with Henry, Julia and William attempting to reach the stones together. That leaves the exact future of this branch deliberately unresolved heading into Season 2.

And that uncertainty matters. We know Claire exists. We know the version of her childhood she understands. But Blood of My Blood has now placed an entire hidden chapter between those facts and the events we thought we knew.

Where Do The Grants Fit?

The Grant family is not part of Jamie’s direct bloodline, but Season 1 makes them enormously important because marriage is one of the mechanisms used to connect and control these clans.

Malcolm Grant is intended to marry Ellen, which would have joined the Grants and MacKenzies through her. That arrangement collapses by the finale. Instead, the consequences eventually push Dougal MacKenzie into marriage with Maura Grant.

That is exactly why a family tree for this show cannot simply be a list of parents and children. Marriage is political infrastructure. Who marries whom can determine alliances, leadership, land, protection and survival, meaning the branches that almost connect can matter nearly as much as the ones that actually do.

How Blood Of My Blood Connects To Jamie Fraser

Jamie sits at the convergence point of two deeply complicated Highland families. On his mother’s side are the MacKenzies: Ellen, Colum, Dougal, Jocasta, Janet and Red Jacob. On his father’s side are Brian, Davina and Lord Lovat, with Murtagh belonging to the wider Fraser family surrounding them.

That gives Blood of My Blood a built-in dramatic advantage. We already know Jamie. Every choice these characters make can therefore create dramatic irony because the audience can see consequences they cannot.

When Ellen fights against being used as a political bride, we know a future exists in which Jamie Fraser is born. When Brian refuses to become an extension of Lord Lovat, we know the kind of man his son will eventually become. When Murtagh loves Ellen from a distance, we know he will someday devote himself to her child.

The future is not a spoiler here. The future is the pressure.

How Blood Of My Blood Connects To Claire

Claire’s side works differently because the prequel is actively destabilizing the history she believes she knows.

Henry and Julia are not simply names attached to a childhood tragedy anymore. They have a marriage, a son, a time-travel story, and direct experience with the same century that Claire will eventually enter herself.

That creates a very Outlander problem: the family tree is no longer only about ancestry. It is also about chronology.

Claire can be descended from Henry and Julia while their lives simultaneously intersect with a period decades before Claire’s own birth. Once time travel enters the genealogy, a straight line becomes something closer to a knot.

Why The Blood Of My Blood Family Tree Actually Matters

A family tree can easily become trivia: this person is that person’s uncle, this character marries that character, and everybody has three names and a tartan.

That is not the interesting part of Blood of My Blood.

The interesting part is that the prequel turns genealogy into story. These relationships explain where loyalties come from, why certain betrayals hurt more than others, why marriage is treated as political currency, and how the emotional damage of one generation can survive long enough to become someone else’s problem.

Jamie and Claire may sit at the center of Outlander, but Blood of My Blood keeps reminding us that neither of them appeared out of nowhere. They inherited people, histories, secrets, loyalties and wounds long before they inherited names.
