That makes Julia and Henry much more than another parallel romance in the prequel.

When Do Julia And Henry Travel Through The Stones?

Julia and Henry are traveling through the Scottish Highlands when their car crashes near Craigh na Dun. Julia disappears first. Henry searches for her, approaches the standing stones, and hears the familiar buzzing sound Outlander viewers already associate with time travel.

The premiere deliberately stops short of showing every part of the crossing.

That is why our original version of this article described the answer as something the episode “strongly suggests.” At that point, that was the most accurate way to describe what the show had revealed.

Episode 2 removes the ambiguity.

Episode 2 Confirms Julia Traveled To 1714

“S.W.A.K. (Sealed With A Kiss)” opens Julia’s side of the story by showing her wake inside the stone circle after the crossing.

Her wedding ring has lost its gemstone, and Henry is gone.

Julia does not initially understand that she has traveled more than two centuries into the past. She tries to orient herself using the world she knows, leaves Henry a message using “S.W.A.K.,” and eventually realizes that the year is 1714 rather than the 20th century she left behind.

There is no longer any question about what happened.

Henry Travels Through The Stones Too

Henry follows Julia through time.

He also arrives in 1714, although the two do not arrive together and do not immediately know where the other has gone.

That separation becomes the engine of their Season 1 story.

Julia ends up trapped within Lord Lovat’s world, while Henry becomes connected to the Grant family. Both spend much of the season trying to survive long enough to find the other.

That distinction matters because Blood of My Blood is not simply repeating Claire’s original crossing.

Claire enters the past alone.

Julia and Henry both cross, arrive in the same historical period, and then spend the season separated inside it.

Why Did Julia And Henry End Up In 1714?

This is where the answer becomes less certain.

Blood of My Blood confirms that Julia and Henry travel to 1714, but Season 1 does not give us a complete mechanical explanation for why that particular year becomes their destination.

And that matters because time travel in Outlander has never functioned like entering a date into a machine.

Travelers can be influenced by people, places, objects, gemstones, intention, and the strange rules surrounding the stones, but the franchise has always left some room between what its characters understand and what the phenomenon actually does.

Julia and Henry make that uncertainty even more interesting because neither of them begins this journey knowing that time travel is real.

They are not Claire deliberately trying to return to Jamie.

They are not Brianna or Roger entering the stones with generations of accumulated knowledge about how the phenomenon works.

They stumble into something they do not understand.

And somehow, both are delivered into the same year.

Do Julia And Henry Need Gemstones To Time Travel?

Julia’s first crossing gives us one important clue.

After arriving in the past, the gemstone from her wedding ring is gone.

That connects her crossing to one of the established ideas surrounding Outlander time travel: gemstones can be consumed or destroyed during passage through the stones.

But Julia and Henry do not understand that rule when they first cross.

That becomes especially important later because knowing that you can travel is not the same thing as understanding how to travel safely or deliberately.

Claire and the other experienced travelers gradually accumulate knowledge about the stones.

Julia and Henry are basically figuring out the instruction manual after somebody has already thrown them through the machine.

Are Julia And Henry Both Time Travelers?

Yes.

This is another place where the answer is now much more definitive than it was when the premiere aired.

Both Julia and Henry are capable of hearing and passing through the stones.

That is potentially significant because their daughter Claire is also a time traveler.

But we should be careful about jumping from those facts to a rule the show has not actually established.

Julia and Henry being travelers does not automatically prove that every part of Claire’s ability comes from a simple genetic formula.

What it does establish is that Claire is no longer the only known traveler inside her immediate family history.

Does This Mean Time Travel Is Inherited?

It certainly makes inheritance much harder to ignore.

Claire spends much of her life believing she understands what happened to her parents.

Then she travels through the stones and discovers an impossible reality she has no reason to believe anyone in her immediate family ever experienced.

Now the audience knows something Claire does not.

Her parents had already crossed.

They had already lived in the 18th century.

They had already experienced the dislocation, danger, disbelief and extraordinary consequences that Claire would eventually experience herself.

That does not invalidate Claire’s story.

It makes it sadder.

Claire spends so much of her life trying to understand something that separated her from everyone she knew without realizing that the two people she lost as a child might have understood it better than almost anyone.

Does Their Time Travel Mean Claire Was Destined To Find Jamie?

Not necessarily.

But Blood of My Blood certainly makes the question more interesting.

The franchise has always lived in the tension between choice and fate.

Claire chooses Jamie.

Jamie chooses Claire.

People repeatedly make decisions that change the course of their lives.

But they make those choices inside a world filled with prophecy, repeating history, inherited abilities, impossible coincidences, and standing stones that seem remarkably good at putting particular people into particular eras.

Julia and Henry add another pattern.

Before Claire is old enough to know what time travel is, her parents have already been carried into the century where Claire will eventually meet Jamie.

That does not prove destiny.

But it makes coincidence work considerably harder.

Do Julia And Henry Meet Jamie’s Parents In The Past?

Their stories occupy the same historical world, and Season 1 increasingly intertwines the Beauchamp story with the people surrounding Brian and Ellen.

Julia becomes trapped within Lord Lovat’s household, where Brian and Davina become part of her survival story.

Henry becomes connected to the Grants, whose political relationship with the MacKenzies directly affects Ellen’s future.

That is one of the smartest structural choices in the prequel.

Brian and Ellen are not simply Story A while Julia and Henry are Story B.

Time travel allows the consequences of one family’s choices to begin pushing against the other.

Jamie and Claire have not even been born into their eventual story yet, and their families are already colliding.

What Happens When Julia And Henry Reunite?

After spending most of Season 1 separated, Henry and Julia eventually find each other again.

The reunion changes their objective immediately.

Survival is no longer enough.

Season 1 does not answer that question.

Henry and Julia reach Craigh na Dun with their infant son William and intend to return to their own time. But suddenly they have to confront a terrifying possibility they had not been able to test:

What if William cannot travel?

Both Henry and Julia have already crossed the stones.

William has not.

They do not know whether their ability guarantees his.

They do not know what happens if a parent crosses while holding a child who cannot.

And they have very little time to solve the problem.

That is a genuinely good use of the mythology because the rules are no longer trivia.

They become a family decision.

What Happens At The Stones In The Season 1 Finale?

In “Something Borrowed,” Henry, Julia and William finally reach Craigh na Dun while danger closes in behind them.

Their original plan begins to fracture once they realize they cannot be certain William will survive the crossing.

With almost no time left, Henry ultimately forces the decision and brings Julia and William into contact with the stones as the family attempts to escape together.

And then the episode cuts away.

Season 1 deliberately does not show us where everyone ends up.

That leaves a very different cliffhanger from the one the premiere created.

Episode 1 asked:

Did Julia and Henry travel?

Yes.

The finale asks:

Can this family control where time travel takes them — and can all three of them make the journey together?

That answer belongs to Season 2.

Why The Finale’s Cliffhanger Works

The stones are most interesting when they create choices instead of simply providing transportation.

By the finale, Henry and Julia know enough to understand what the stones can offer but not enough to trust them.

That is an excellent place to put the characters.

They know the impossible is possible.

They do not know whether the impossible is safe.

And because William is now involved, the cost of being wrong is no longer only their own lives.

The mythology becomes dramatic because incomplete knowledge forces a decision.

That is much more valuable than simply answering another rule about gemstones or dates.

What Julia And Henry Change About Outlander’s Time Travel

The biggest change is not a new technical rule.

It is perspective.

Claire’s first journey through Craigh na Dun originally feels like the moment the impossible enters her family story.

Blood of My Blood tells us that it was not.

The impossible was already there.

Claire simply did not know.

Her parents had already heard the stones.

They had already crossed centuries.

They had already tried to survive in a world that was not theirs.

And they had already tried to find their way home.

That gives Claire and her parents a connection none of them were ever able to consciously share.

Claire thought time travel made her different from the family she lost.
