In our Blood of My Blood Season 2 Episode 2 review, we break down “The Veil of Time,” an episode that adds major new context to Outlander’s time-travel mythology while raising one very important question: what if Maisri’s prophecy is not confusing at all, and Lord Lovat is simply hearing what he wants to hear?
The episode also gives Brian Fraser his biggest leadership moment yet, sends Henry toward another attempt at the stones, deepens Mrs. Graham’s connection to the supernatural, and gives Julia a devastating answer about whether she can ever follow Claire through time. Mary and Blake agree there is a lot to love here, but they split over whether Brian has actually earned the leader he suddenly appears to be.

Blood Of My Blood Season 2 Episode 2 Recap: What Happens In “The Veil Of Time”?
Julia secretly brings Maisri to Castle Leathers because she wants to know whether she can travel through the stones. Maisri tells her that she cannot: even when Samhain leaves the veil thin as gauze, “the gift is not in ye.” When Lord Lovat returns, he turns Maisri’s visit into another prophecy session and hears a vision involving red and white roses, a baby with two mothers and three fathers, a fox, and a possible future king. Before leaving, Maisri also tells Julia that Claire is safe and being watched over by a father’s heart.
In 1924, Mrs. Graham helps Henry escape the hospital and prepares him to attempt the stones again at Samhain. Back in 1715, Lovat struggles to recruit men for the Jacobite cause until Brian steps in and wins the room over. Ellen warns Colum that Dougal could put the MacKenzies and Leoch at risk by joining the rebellion, so she proposes putting Leoch into her keeping as protection if everything goes wrong.
Brian and Murtagh eventually arrive at Leoch, where Brian and Dougal fight before realizing that they are now working toward the same cause. Maura encourages Dougal’s growing political instincts, Murtagh meets Grace, Seema arrives at Castle Leathers, and Brian and Ellen get one final Samhain moment together before he leaves.

Blood Of My Blood Season 2 Episode 2 Review
Mary gives “The Veil of Time” a 4.5 out of 5 Kilt Rating, while Blake gives it a 4.12 out of 5. The mythology is some of the most interesting material the show has produced, especially once Maisri, Julia, Henry and Mrs. Graham begin connecting directly to questions we have carried through Outlander for years.
Blake’s biggest reservation is that Blood of My Blood sometimes seems to know exactly where its characters need to end up and gets excited enough about the destination that it skips part of the journey. Brian is the clearest example. The recruitment speech works as a scene, Jamie Roy sells it, and we can absolutely recognize pieces of Jamie Fraser in the man standing in that room. The question is whether Brian has developed the political skill required to command that room, or whether the show is letting our knowledge of the man he will become do some of the character work for it.
Mary lands on the other side. For her, Brian has spent most of his life keeping his head down, and the fight to get back to Ellen has finally forced him to discover a voice that was already inside him. That disagreement makes the scene more interesting because the argument is not whether Brian’s speech works. It is whether the story has earned his ability to give it.
What Does “The Veil Of Time” Mean?
The title works on more than one level. Mrs. Graham tells Henry that there are moments when the veil between times grows thin, especially around Samhain. Maisri uses nearly the same language with Julia, explaining that Craigh na Dun is one of those places where the veil can become thin enough to cross.
But the episode also places its characters on different sides of that veil. Henry believes Samhain may give him an opening back to Julia. Julia learns that a thin veil is not enough if she does not possess the gift required to cross it. Maisri appears capable of looking through time without physically crossing it at all. Lord Lovat then mistakes those glimpses of the future for a clear map of his own destiny.
That makes “The Veil of Time” more than a reference to Craigh na Dun. The whole episode is about people trying to see, reach or understand something on the other side of a boundary they cannot fully control.
Is Maisri’s Prophecy Really About One Person?
The prophecy becomes the biggest rabbit hole of the episode because Maisri never delivers it as one clean answer. She gives Lovat fragments: red and white roses, a baby with two mothers and three fathers, a field of thorns, white roses, a russet coat, a fox, a son’s name and a conditional path toward kingship.
Lovat is the person who keeps connecting those pieces. When Maisri says “two mothers,” he supplies Mother Mary. When she says “fathers three,” he supplies the Trinity. He asks whether she means a Catholic king, but Maisri never confirms that interpretation. She simply moves on to the next image.
That may be the key to the entire scene. Maisri supplies the fragments; Lovat supplies the continuity. The assumption that every image refers to the same baby, the same bloodline and the same moment in history may belong to Lovat rather than to the prophecy itself.
Mary also offers a fascinating alternative during the podcast, connecting the roses to Jamie and Claire and wondering whether the baby could ultimately connect to Jamie’s brother Willie. Blake remains interested in the possibility that William Beauchamp, William Ransom, the Jacobite cause and Lord Lovat could all occupy different pieces of the same vision.
Could William Be The Reason Julia Traveled Through The Stones?
Maisri’s most important line to Julia may also be her simplest: “the gift is not in ye.” Julia cannot pass through the stones now, but we know that she successfully crossed once before while she was pregnant with William.
That creates a much more literal interpretation of Maisri’s wording. What if Julia never possessed the time-travel gift herself? What if the gift was physically in her during her first crossing because unborn William was the traveler?
If that theory is correct, Julia may not have carried William through the stones at all. William may have carried Julia through. It would explain why pregnancy matters to her first crossing while leaving a much harder question now that William has been born and Julia appears unable to repeat the journey.
We break that theory down further in Did Julia And Henry Time Travel? Why Maisri’s “Gift” Line Changes Everything.
What “The Veil Of Time” Adds To Outlander
Blake gives this episode a 4.6 out of 5 BOMB Impact because so much of it changes how we understand the parent series. The biggest example may be Mrs. Graham. Long before Claire ever tells her that she traveled through the stones, Mrs. Graham has now met Henry Beauchamp, believed his story, taught him about Samhain and gemstones, and actively helped him attempt a return journey.
That makes Mrs. Graham’s later willingness to believe Claire feel very different. She is not simply a woman who happens to know Highland folklore. She already has history with someone claiming to have experienced the impossible.
The political story adds context too. We are watching Dougal’s commitment to the Jacobite cause form decades before Claire arrives, while Lovat, the Frasers and the MacKenzies are making choices that will eventually shape the world Jamie inherits. Blood of My Blood is at its best when it does exactly this: it takes something we already know from Outlander and gives us a reason to see it differently.
Did Brian Fraser Earn His Leadership Moment?
Brian’s speech is probably the clearest example of the episode succeeding in the moment while still raising a larger structural question. Lovat appeals to entitlement and gets nowhere. Brian acknowledges Lovat’s failures, acknowledges his own status as Lovat’s bastard son, and changes the argument from whether Simon Fraser deserves loyalty to whether the Fraser clan has a shared purpose.
That shift works. The room changes because Brian changes what the conversation is about. Blake’s issue is not with the speech itself; it is with the progression that gets Brian there. One earlier moment where Brian tried to persuade men, failed and learned something from it might have made this moment feel less like leadership arriving fully formed.
Mary sees the transformation differently. For her, the episode is showing us that Brian has finally been pushed into becoming the man he always had the ability to be. That makes the scene one of the best examples of why Mary and Blake can watch the same moment, agree that it works emotionally, and still disagree about whether the writing fully earned it.
What Does “The Veil Of Time” Set Up Next?
The biggest unresolved question is what happens if Henry can travel and Julia cannot. Henry is preparing to use Samhain and the stones to get back to the woman he loves, while Julia has just been told that the veil may remain closed to her no matter how thin it becomes.
That could eventually force Henry and Julia into a much harder choice than simply finding one another. If Julia truly cannot return to Claire, do Henry and Julia remain in the past knowing that Uncle Lamb is caring for their daughter in the future? And if unborn William really was responsible for Julia’s first crossing, what does that mean for the Beauchamp family and the rules of time travel going forward?
Maisri’s prophecy hangs over all of it. The show has given us the pieces, but it has also spent an entire episode warning us not to become Lord Lovat and assume we already know how they fit together.

“The Veil of Time” leaves us with a useful warning for the rest of the season: seeing the future and understanding the future are not the same thing. Maisri may be showing everyone exactly what is coming. The danger begins when people like Lord Lovat decide that the future must mean exactly what they want it to mean.
