Our Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 Episode 6 recap and reaction digs into “Small Mercies,” an episode that brings Lord Lovat’s cruelty to a horrifying new level and puts Brian Fraser in an impossible position at Fort William. The youngest Black Jack Randall has arrived, Dougal is forced to endure another terrible loss, and Ellen returns to Leoch with questions the story has yet to answer.

Mary and Blake have some genuinely different reactions to this hour. Mary sees how the attack at Castle Leathers could change Julia and Ellen’s futures, while Blake worries about the show repeatedly using reproductive violence to propel its stories. They also disagree about how many familiar Outlander faces the prequel can bring in before the connections start feeling forced. Through all of it, the episode keeps returning to one uncomfortable question: what does it mean to make a decision that controls someone else’s future?

Spoilers ahead for “Small Mercies,” including discussion of Black Jack Randall and Jamie Fraser’s future in the original Outlander.

Blood of My Blood Season 2 Episode 6 Recap: What Happens in “Small Mercies”?

After the Battle of Sheriffmuir, Leoch is counting the cost. Rupert is dead, and Dougal and Angus are prisoners at Fort William. Colum refuses to risk the clan’s remaining fighting men on another rescue, even while Ned challenges him about what he owes Ellen and Dougal. The conflict makes an increasingly difficult leadership choice feel personal: Colum’s efforts to protect his people are beginning to hurt the people closest to him.

At Castle Leathers, Lord Lovat surprises Ellen by apologizing and acting like a welcoming future father-in-law. His show of hospitality ends in horror when Ellen and Julia fall ill after drinking spiced wine. Ellen reveals she is pregnant and fears she may lose her baby. Lovat admits he arranged a potion intended to prevent future pregnancies, convinced that Maisri’s prophecy means Simon must be the final son of his line. What actually happens to Ellen’s pregnancy, and whether either woman suffers lasting infertility, is still unconfirmed.

Brian and Murtagh infiltrate Fort William to free Dougal and Angus from a vault filling with the tide, but Angus drowns. As the men escape, Dougal corners a young Jonathan Randall—the soldier who took pleasure in torturing him—and prepares to kill him. Brian stops him because Randall is a frightened boy. That moment becomes heartbreaking for longtime fans who know what Black Jack will eventually do to Jamie Fraser. Back at Leoch, Mrs. Fitz protects Ellen from Colum’s questioning, while Henry and Julia devise a way to exchange secret letters with Arch Bug’s help.

Our Blood of My Blood 2.06 Review: Mercy, Power and the Price of Knowing the Future

The central tension in “Small Mercies” is about people exercising power over the lives of others. Lovat believes that his desire to secure Simon’s future justifies violence against the women around him. Colum believes that leadership requires him to calculate how much risk his clan can take, even when family members need him. Brian uses his authority to save a defenseless prisoner, while Mrs. Fitz gives Ellen something she desperately needs: the chance to decide when she is ready to tell her own story.

Blake argues that the dinner at Leathers succeeds because Lovat is so good at disguising coercion as concern. Tony Curran makes a sudden apology and a friendly toast feel dangerous, especially once Julia begins to suspect the wine. The craft is strong, but Blake worries about a familiar narrative pattern: repeated violence against the women of Outlander, followed by male characters reacting to their pain. Mary pushes back, arguing that the attempted attack also has direct consequences for Julia’s hopes of returning through the stones and shows just how far Lovat will go to force Maisri’s prophecy into existence.

The introduction of young Randall sparks another debate. Blake is uneasy about what he calls “cameo soup,” the accumulation of familiar names and connections that can make a prequel’s world feel too small. Mary is more willing to enjoy the connections as part of the larger Outlander universe. They both recognize the terrible dramatic irony of Brian’s choice: he sees an adolescent prisoner, while the audience sees Jamie’s future tormentor. Brian’s mercy tells us something admirable about him, even as we dread what comes next.

Colum and Ned provide one of Blake’s favorite storylines. Colum has real reasons to protect the clan after Sheriffmuir, yet Ned refuses to let those reasons erase his duties to Ellen and Dougal. Mrs. Fitz offers the episode’s quieter counterpoint by giving Ellen space to recover. Henry and Arch Bug’s growing understanding, built on Henry saving Arch’s life, allows Henry and Julia to return to something that once sustained their relationship: secret letters.

Mary and Blake’s Actual Kilt Ratings and BOMB Impact Scores

Kilt Ratings: Mary gives “Small Mercies” 4.8 out of 5, while Blake gives it 4.57 out of 5. Both enjoyed the episode, although they recognize how emotionally difficult it is and have concerns about different story choices.

BOMB Impact: Mary gives the episode 4.8 out of 5, and Blake gives it 4.5 out of 5 for the way these events add texture and context to the original Outlander story. The Fort William confrontation and Dougal’s relationship with Angus and Rupert are especially powerful franchise connections.

Does “Small Mercies” Change the Way We See Brian Fraser and Black Jack Randall?

That is one of the episode’s most painful questions. Brian makes a compassionate choice about a young man whose future he cannot possibly know, but viewers remember Randall’s brutal treatment of Jamie. The series makes us want an outcome we know Brian, as the man he is, would struggle to accept. Our separate Brian Fraser and young Black Jack Randall explainer digs into the choice, the Fort William connection and the moral cost of that dramatic irony.

Blood of My Blood Season 2 Episode 6 Ending Explained

At the end of “Small Mercies,” Ellen returns to Leoch frightened and in pain after the poisoned wine. The episode establishes that Lovat tried to prevent her and Julia from having more children, but it leaves Ellen’s pregnancy and the long-term consequences unresolved. Mrs. Fitz protects Ellen from Colum’s demands for answers, insisting that Ellen should speak about what happened when she is ready.

Brian’s decision to spare young Randall gives the ending another haunting consequence for viewers of the original Outlander: he unknowingly allows Jamie’s future tormentor to live. Henry and Julia, meanwhile, have a new way to stay connected through letters carried with Arch Bug’s help. Those separate moments return us to the same question about mercy, power, and who gets to shape another person’s future.

Our Favorite Moments and Biggest Concerns

Mary names Henry and Arch Bug’s friendship as her Good and the first meeting between Ellen and Davina as her Great. Her Bads center on Colum’s brusque response to Grace and John Cameron’s uncomfortable behavior. Blake chooses the Colum/Ned conflict as his Good and Mrs. Fitz’s defense of Ellen as his Great. His concerns include the reproductive-violence story and the growing collection of familiar franchise faces. Their different reactions give the discussion room to explore what is working and what may need stronger follow-through.

What Happens Next for Ellen, Brian and Lord Lovat?

Blake’s Outlandish Theory is that Brian will discover what Lovat did to Ellen and want revenge, but Ellen will be the one to stop him. For Blake, the most meaningful way to continue the story would be to let Ellen take control of what happens after the attack, rather than having the experience defined by someone else’s response. Mary is interested in how the poisoning could affect the time-travel plan and the future of both families. These are their reactions and theories, not confirmed developments from a later episode.

Why Is Blood of My Blood Episode 6 Called “Small Mercies”?

This episode shows what happens when powerful people believe they can control another person’s future. The moment that stays with Blake comes at Ellen’s door, where Mrs. Fitz tells Colum to give her the mercy of silence. After all the shocking choices and famous family connections, it is a small act of respect that makes the episode’s title feel earned.
