We covered the television story first without reading ahead in Bernard Cornwell’s books, which means our original podcast reactions follow Uhtred’s journey the same way viewers experienced it: one episode, one terrible Alfred decision and approximately seventeen uses of the word arseling at a time.
If you’re watching for the first time, rewatching before the movie or just trying to remember who betrayed whom approximately four kingdoms ago, these are the easiest ways into our Last Kingdom coverage.

Osbert becomes Uhtred, loses his Saxon home, gains a Danish family and loses that too. Season 1 creates the identity conflict that powers the entire series as Uhtred becomes trapped between Brida, Bebbanburg, Alfred and a kingdom he refuses to admit is becoming part of him.
Uhtred heads north, gets betrayed into slavery, finds Finan, finally confronts Kjartan and builds a life with Gisela before Alfred pulls him back into another war. The season keeps putting its characters inside literal and political cages and asking what they will sacrifice to escape.
Alfred is dying. Ragnar is murdered. Gisela is gone. Edward is preparing to inherit a kingdom he may not be ready to rule. Season 3 turns death into an argument about legacy and gives Uhtred and Alfred the confrontation their entire relationship has been building toward.
Uhtred begins the season chasing the Bebbanburg he inherited and ends it being handed Æthelstan to mentor. Beocca’s death, Æthelflæd’s rise and the arrival of Sigtryggr push Uhtred toward a new role: he is no longer simply the son fighting fathers. He is becoming the adult in the room.
Brida’s revenge, Æthelflæd’s final days, Sigtryggr’s fate and the next generation all converge as Uhtred finally gets the chance he has spent his entire life waiting for: the road home to Bebbanburg.
Season 5 gave Uhtred the ending his lifelong desire demanded: Bebbanburg. Seven Kings Must Die then does some fairly aggressive plot yoga to give a character with a completed arc one more reason to leave home and save England.
We liked the final chapter, even if Mary still maintains it is basically The Last Kingdom 5.1 rather than a standalone movie. What ultimately makes it work is Uhtred’s final image between Bebbanburg and Valhalla — one last choice for a man who has spent his entire life being told where he belongs.
You can describe The Last Kingdom as a historical drama about Alfred, Vikings, Saxons and the creation of England, but that is not really why we kept showing up. The history gives the story scale. Uhtred gives it a heartbeat.
The series takes enormous political questions and makes them personal. What is England worth if creating it destroys the people inside it? What does loyalty mean when every oath asks Uhtred to betray another piece of himself? Is home something you inherit, somewhere you return to or the people who keep riding beside you even after you have made yet another catastrophically Uhtred decision?
And underneath all of it is the relationship between Uhtred and Alfred. Two men who disagree about nearly everything spend years discovering that each has become essential to the other’s dream. Alfred wants to build England. Uhtred wants Bebbanburg. Somehow, they end up helping each other create both.
The series may be finished, but some questions are worth arguing about long after the shield wall comes down. These guides dig into Uhtred’s history, relationships, timeline and final fate.
When we started The Last Kingdom podcast, neither of us had read Bernard Cornwell’s novels. We deliberately kept it that way while watching because we wanted to judge the television story on the story it was actually telling rather than measuring every choice against what happened on the page.
That means the archive preserves our reactions as they happened: theories before we knew the answer, characters we trusted before they inevitably did something terrible, and all the storycraft conversations that came from experiencing Uhtred’s journey without knowing where destiny was taking him next.
We’re Mary and Blake, a husband-and-wife team who have spent years talking about television, film, storytelling and all the tiny character decisions normal people probably know how to let go. Our goal has never been to tell you what you should think about an episode. We would much rather give you another way to think about it and then argue about the rest around the kitchen table.
With The Last Kingdom, that meant character, theme, filmmaking, history, ridiculous theories, deeply important Finan analysis and one central question that lasted all the way from the premiere to Uhtred’s final scene: where does this man actually belong?
